Game #46 Toronto Blue Jays (19-27) @ Chicago White Sox (21-24) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a go-ahead 2-run HR in the top of the 8th as the Blue Jays knocked off the White Sox 5-2

After rain washed out half of the game yesterday, the Blue Jays were back at it today looking for the series split. Trent Thornton was back on the mound after securing his first career win, and first career hits and runs last start. Eric Sogard was back at second base and leading off after a day off yesterday. Justin Smoak was at first base with Rowdy Tellez serving as the DH today. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after Luke Mailer caught knuckleballer Ryan Feierabend. Could the Blue Jays split this four game series? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:
  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd as Billy McKinney smacked a solo shot to right
  • The White Sox tied in the bottom of the 4th as Yoan Moncada scored on a ground out by Jose Abreu
  • Reynaldo Lopez pitching line: 6IP 4H 1R (earned) 2BB 1K 99 pitches (64 for strikes)
  • Trent Thornton pitching line: 6IP 3H 1R (earned) 1BB 4K 87 pitches (52 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 8th as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. slammed a 2-run bomb to left also scoring Jonathan Davis
  • The White Sox got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Abreu doubled home Charlie Tilson
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 9th as Danny Jansen blasted a two-run shot to left center also scoring McKinney
  • Ken Giles pitched a scoreless 9th for his 10th save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 5 White Sox 2
My Take:
  • Trent Thornton had his second straight strong start, but his teammates gave him next to no run support. Thornton allowed 1 run on 3 hits and a walk. At one point, he retired 8 in a row. Great start by Thornrton
  • The Blue Jays got some clutch offence late courtesy of two run blasts in back to back innings by Vlad and Danny Jansen, who also completed a strike 'em out throw 'em out DP to end the 5th
  • Good effort to split the road trip and the weekend series.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays open a four game set at home vs. the Boston Red Sox. David Price is coming off the IL to torture Blue Jays batters. Edwin Jackson will make his second start in a Blue Jays uniform
