Game #24 Atlanta Braves (12-14) @ Toronto Blue Jays (12-12) - game recap

Alejandro Kirk had his first multi-HR game of his career in a 13-5 rout over the Atlanta Braves

After a tough loss to earn the series split to Washington, the Blue Jays welcomed the Braves for a weekend series in Dunedin. Last season, the Braves won 2/3 games in the season series and outscored the Blue Jays 15-6. Tonight was a battle of veteran lefties with Drew Smyly pitching against Blue Jays southpaw Robbie Ray. Teoscar Hernandez returned to the lineup in RF after missing 16 games with a bout of COVID-19. Jonathan Davis was option to the alt. squad. Tanner Roark was DFA'd. Nate Pearson was activated from the IL yesterday but will do a rehab assignment in the minors first. George Springer was in the leadoff spot serving as the DH, as he continues to work his way back to full health from a nagging quad strain. Alejandro Kirk got the start as Ray's personal catcher. Randal Grichuk was in CF. Espinal Santiago got the start at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays open the weekend with a win? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd as Randal Grichuk hammered a 2-run bomb to right-center also scoring George Springer
  • The Blue Jays added two runs in the bottom of the 4th as Alejandro Kirk hammered a 2-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 5th as Randal Grichuk whacked a solo blast down the left field line
  • Four batters later, Kirk annihilated a two-run bomb to dead center also scoring Marcus Semien
  • Drew Smyly pitching line: 4IP 7H 6R (5 earned) 4BB 3K 84 pitches (46 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added three runs in the bottom of the 6th as Teoscar Hernandez hammered a 3-run bomb to dead center also scoring Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • The Braves got a pair back in the top of the 7th as Ozzie Albies cranked a 2-run blast to left-center; also scoring Marcell Ozuna
  • Robbie Ray pitching line: 6.2IP 5H 2R (both earned) 0BB 5K 95 pitches (68 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 7th on a wild pitch by Sean Newcombe that scored Santiago Espinal
  • A batter later, Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Kirk
  • The Braves got one back in the top of the 8th as Freddie Freeman singled scoring Ehlre Adrianza
  • A batter later, Ozuna singled scoring Alex Jackson and Ronald Acuna
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom half of the inning as Gurriel Jr. cranked a solo blast to left-center
  • Final score: Blue Jays 13 Braves 5

My Take:

  • Robbie Ray had a strong start, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while walking none and striking out 5 over 6.2 innings. At one point, Ray retired 13 batters in a row. The only inning he got in trouble was the 7th where he allowed his only two runs on a 2-run HR and 2 other hits.
  • It was a home run fest right from the get-go. Thirteen of the combined eighteen runs came courtesy of the long ball. Alejandro Kirk had the first multi-home run game of his career and drove in four runs. Teoscar Hernandez, in his first game back after batting COVID-19, hammered a 3-run bomb. Bo Bichette got it started with a 2-run shot of his own. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Randal Grichuk both had solo shots
  • Every Blue Jays hitter but Marcus Semien had at least one hit. Semien drew a walk and scored
  • George Springer is finding his stroke as well. He got his first hit as a Blue Jay, leading off the game with a single. He also drew a pair of walks and scored his first run as a Blue Jay on Bichette's HR,
  • A bit unfortunate that the Blue Jays had to use three relievers to get the final 8 outs, especially with tomorrow expected to be a bullpen day. Unfortunately Ryan Borucki was knocked around, giving up 3 runs on 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out one and only managing 2 outs in the 6 batters he faced.
  • Despite putting up 13 runs, the Blue Jays could have had many more runs. They were 4-13 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays continue the weekend series vs. the Braves. It will be another 7:37EDT start time. Charlie Morton will be starting for the Braves and the Blue Jays will likely turn to one of Ttent Thornton or David Phelps to be the opener in a bullpen day

Game #23 Washington Nationals (9-12) @ Toronto Blue Jays (11-12) - game recap

George Springer made his Blue Jays regular season debut in an 8-2 rout loss to the Nationals

After a huge come from behind win, the Blue Jays were looking to sweep the mini two game set with the Nationals. George Springer made his long-anticipated debut after recovering from oblique and quad strains. Springer was signed to a huge $150-million 6-year deal in the off-season. Hyun-jin Ryu was placed on the 10-day IL with a glut strain suffered in his start Sunday vs. the Rays. Hopefully he only misses one start because the Blue Jays are super thin in the pitching department and already have a couple of bullpen days a week. Rowdy Tellez was optioned to the alt. squad with Springer expected to DH a lot in the early going as he continues to work his way back to full health. Steven Matz got the start and was looking to improve to 5-0. He's looked excellent in his first 3 starts. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after the day off yesterday. The rest of the lineup was the same as yesterday. Could the Blue Jays make it three wins in a row? Here is tonight's game recap

Game Highlights:

  • The Nationals opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd as Ryan Zimmerman singled home Victor Robles and Trea Turner
  • A batter later, Starlin Castro singled scoring Josh Harrison
  • The Nationals added 3 runs in the top of the 4th on three run bomb to dead center by Harisson; also scoring Robles and Turner
  • Steven Matz pitching line: 32IP 8H 6R (all earned) 1BB 2K 80 pitches (54 for strikes)
  • The Nationals added a pair of runs in the top of the 5th as Josh Bell hammered a opposite-field 2-run bomb to left; also scoring Kyle Schwarber
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Lourdes Gurriel Jr. whacked a solo blast to right
  • Erick Fedde pitching line: 6IP 2H 1R (earned) 3BB 7K 98 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 8th as Bo Bichette annihilated a solo bomb off the scoreboard in left
  • Final score: Nationals 8 Blue Jays 2

My Take:

  • It was not a good night for Steven Matz, who was knocked around for 6 runs on 8 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 2. He also hit Josh Bell to load the bases in the 3rd inning. He pitched in and out of trouble in every inning but the 2nd when he had a clean 1-2-3 inning. Hopefully he bounces back next start because the Blue Jays need starters to eat innings.
  • George Springer finally made his regular season debut after missing the first 22 games with oblique and quad strains. Springer was just days away from making his debut when he injured his quad while running the bases. While Springer was 0-4 in his debut, he made contact in every AB. It might take a few games for him to get his timing back. Batting practice is vastly different from playing a game.
  • Danny Jansen's hitless streak was extended to 0-34. His last hit was a double April 7 against Texas. With few catching options, the best the Blue Jays can really do is give more playing time to Alejandro Kirk. The Blue Jays could send Jansen to the minors if he has options left. Jansen is under Blue Jay control until 2025 when he becomes a free agent
  • The Blue Jays were 0-3 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, after an off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays begin a weekend series against the Braves. Atlanta won 2 of the 3 games in the season series last year and outscored the Blue Jays 15-6. Robbie Ray gets the start Friday against an unannounced Braves starter.

Game #22 Washington Nationals (8-12) @ Toronto Blue Jays (11-11) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit three HR, including a grand slam in a 9-5 come-from behind victory over the Nationals

After an off-day yesterday, the Blue Jays opened a mini 2-game series with the Washington Nationals. Last season, the Blue Jays were supposed to play a home and home 4-game series. Due to Buffalo needing renovations to meet MLB standards and COVID protocols and the border closed, all four games were played in Washington, but the Blue Jays were considered the home team in the latter 2 games. The Blue Jays and Nationals split the 4 games with the "home" team winning all 4 games. The Blue Jays outscored the Nationals 13-12. Tonight, the Blue Jays faced Nats ace Max Scherzer. Scherzer allowed just three hits over 7.1 innings his start against the Blue Jays last season. He earned a no-decision that day. It was a bullpen day for the Blue Jays as they continue to deal with a rash of injuries to their pitching staff. Trent Thornton got the ball first. Alejandro Kirk got the start behind the plate. Joe Panik was at the hot corner. George Springer was not activated tonight as his quad is becoming a nagging issue. Marcus Semien was back at 2B after playing SS Sunday. Bo Bichette was back at SS after serving as DH Sunday. Cavan Biggio was in LF and batted leadoff. Rowdy Tellez served as the DH today. Could the Blue Jays make it three straight wins? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Nationals opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as leadoff hitter Trea Turner lined a screamer over the wall in left
  • The Nationals added a run in the top of the 3rd as Turner whacked a solo blast to left-center
  • Trent Thornton pitching line: 2.1IP 3H 2R (both earned) 0BB 2K 42 pitches (26 for strikes)
  • A batter later, Yadiel Hernandez smacked a solo shot to left-center
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hammered a grand slam to left-center; also scoring Alejandro Kirk, Cavan Biggio and Bo Bichette
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Joe Panik scored on a fielding error by Josh Harrison on a ball hit by Kirk
  • A batter later, Kirk scored on a sac fly by Biggio
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 5th as Guerrero Jr. annihilated a solo bomb to dead center
  • Max Scherzer pitching line: 5IP 8H 7R (5 earned) 2BB 5K 86 pitches (54 for strikes)
  • The Nationals got a pair back in the top of the 8th as Ryan Zimmerman knocked a 2-run shot to right; also scoring Hernandez
  • The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as Guerrero Jr. whacked a 2-run opposite field shot to right also scoring Bichette
  • Final score: Blue Jays 9 Nationals 5

My Take:

  • The Blue Jays went with the opener again and it didn't work out great, at least to start. Trent Thronton gave up a couple of solo HR, including one to the 1st batter of the game. Tommy Milone followed Thornton and the first batter he faced took him yard. I've never been a fan of using an opener. Call me a traditionalist, but I like the old days where pitchers pitched 7 or so every night and faced the lineup 3 times. Sadly, the norm now is to maybe throw 5 or 6 innings. Bullpens used to have 6 or 7 pitchers. Now, they have nine pitchers, who typically throw a couple of innings at most. Roster sizes are still the same, but now there are three bench players available.
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a HUGE night with 3 HR (including a grand slam off Max Scherzer), and 7RBI. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the first player age 22 or younger with 3 career Grand Slams since Alex Rodriguez.
  • Every Blue Jays starter got on base at least once, except Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
  • Tommy Milone was credited with his first win in a Blue Jays uniform, pitching an inning.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays and Nats finish off this quick 2-game series. Steven Matz gets the start against Nationals righty Erick Fedde

Game #21 Toronto Blue Jays (10-11) @ Tampa Bay Rays (11-11) - game recap

Tim Mayza was credited with his first win since Tommy John surgery September 2018 in a 1-0 shutout win over the Rays. Starter Hyun-Jin Ryu was removed in the 4th inning with a strained glute.

The Blue Jays and Rays played the rubber match of the first series of 19 games between the AL East rivals. Hyun-Jin Ryu was on the bump, looking to pitch his team to a victory. Bo Bichette got the half day off, serving as the DH, with Joe Panik at 2B and Marcus Semien sliding over to SS. Randal Grichuk got the start in CF with Cavan Biggio in RF. Santiago Espinal was at the hot corner today. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate, and looking to snap an 0-27 drought offensively. Could the Blue Jays end the road trip with a win? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • Hyun-Jin Ryu pitching line: 3.2IP 3H 0R 1BB 5K 62 pitches (45 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 5th as Santiago Espinal singled home Marcus Semien
  • Luis Patino pitching line: 2.2IP 0H 0R 1BB 3K 42 pitches (30 for strikes)
  • Rafael Dolis retired the final 4 batters for his second save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 1 Rays 0
My Take:
  • An already thin pitching rotation got even thinner Sunday afternoon. Hyun-Jin Ryu left the game with a mild glute strain. He gave up a single and walked slowly back to the mound, crouched down then signaled to the dugout for a trainer. After talking with pitching coach Pete Walker and manager Charlie Montoyo, Ryu walked off the mound and left the game. He has a history of hamstring and glute injuries. You can bet that the Blue Jays will exercise extreme caution with him, as they have with Nate Pearson, George Springer and Thomas Hatch. The schedule is optimal for this injury to occur this week with the Blue Jays having off-days Monday and Thursday. However, they then play 10 days in a row, have an off-day May 10 before playing 6, followed by another off-day and 15 in a row through June 2. Hopefully the injury really is minor and he only misses a start or two.
  • With Ryu's departure, it became a battle of the bullpens over the final 5.1 innings. Tim Mayza, who got the final out of the 4th inning, was credited with his first win since TJ surgery that cost him two seasons. Ryan Borucki, Tyler Chatwood, David Phelps and Dolis held the Rays hitters to two base runners over the final 5 innings (a walk and a hit batter charged to David Phelps). The quartet combined to strike out 4 batters
  • On the offensive side, the Blue Jays eked across a run in the 5th inning that proved to be enough on this day.
  • It was actually batters 5-8 that did the damage offensively, going a combined 6-16. Cavan Biggio, who batted lead off did draw a pair of walks
  • Danny Jansen went 0-4 to extend his hitless streak to 0-31
  • Up next, after an off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays opened a mini 2-game series against the Washington Nationals. The two teams split the 4-games last season. All 4 games were in Washington, but the Blue Jays were considered the home team for the final two as Buffalo had to be revamped to meet MLB standards. The Nats outscored the Blue Jays 13-12 last season. Max Scherzer will start for Washington and the Blue Jays have yet to name a starter (probably a bullpen day)

Game #20 Toronto Blue Jays (9-11) @ Tampa Bay Rays (11-10) - game recap

Randal Grichuk hit a 3-run HR in the 1st inning. Unfortunately, the Rays came from behind to defeat the Blue Jays 5-3

After a solid win on the back of an early 4-0 lead in the 1st inning and the pitching/defense doing just enough to hold that lead, the Blue Jays were looking for the series win over the Rays with a victory today. The last time the Blue Jays won a series in Tampa Bay was August 5-7, 2019. George Springer looks like he might make his Blue Jays debut either this weekend or for sure Tuesday at home vs. Washington. He played in a game last night and reported no issues physically. Tonight, Robbie Ray got the start and was looking to rebound after giving up a career-high six walks in his last start. Alejandro Kirk, his personal catcher, got the start behind the plate. Jordan Romano returned from the 10-day IL. Righty Ty Tice was recalled from the alternate training site. Lefty Travis Bergen and OF Josh Palacios were optioned to the alternate training site. Cavan Biggio was at the hot corner today. Jonathan Davis got the start in CF and Randal Grichuk was in RF. Vlad was in the field and Rowdy Tellez served as the DH today. Could the Blue Jays make it two wins in a row? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 1st as Randal Grichuk hammered a three-run bomb to left; also scoring Cavan Biggio and Rowdy Tellez
  • Brent Honeywell Jr. pitching line: 1IP 3H 3R (all earned) 1BB 2K 30 pitches (19 for strikes)
  • The Rays got one back in the bottom of the 2nd as Mike Zunino lined a screamer down the left field line
  • The Rays tied things up in the bottom of the 6th as Mike Brosseau hammered a 2-run bomb down the left field line also scoring Randy Arozarena
  • Robbie Ray pitching line: 6IP 6H 3R (all earned) 0BB 9K 94 pitches (67 for strikes)
  • The Rays scored a run in the bottom of the 8th on a fielding error by Biggio that scored Brandon Lowe. Brosseau was thrown out trying to score on the play. The ball was hit by Miguel Margot
  • A batter later, Margot scored on a ground out by Kevin Kiermaier
  • Andrew Kittredge pitched a scoreless 9th for his 1st save of the season
  • Final score: Rays 5 Blue Jays 3

My Take:

  • Robbie Ray had a much better outing today. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits while walking none and striking out 9 over 6 innings. The big numbers for me were the walks and strikeouts. Last time out Ray walked 6 in the first three innings. Today, he didn't walk anybody and struck out 9 batters. Ray made 2 mistake pitches that went over the fence, so he got a no decision today
  • Jordan Romano made his return from a neuritis issue in his pitching elbow. He walked the first 2 batters he faced and a fielding error by Biggio cost him an unearned run. The inherited runner Ryan Borucki faced scored on a groundout. He only threw 4 strikes in 13 pitches. More concerning is his velocity was down significantly
  • The Blue Jays again only managed to score in one inning. After scoring 3 runs on three hits and a walk in the first inning, the Blue Jays managed just 8 base runners more in the final 8 innings. They were 2-10 with runners in scoring position on the night.
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had his season-long on-base streak come to an end. He was 0-5 with a strikeout
  • Joe Panik showed no effort running to 1st base in the 9th
  • Up next, the Blue Jays wrap up the series with the Rays and the road trip. Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the start for the Blue Jays. The Rays have not named a starting pitcher for tomorrow

Game #19 Toronto Blue Jays (9-10) @ Tampa Bay Rays (10-10) - game recap

Marcus Semien cranked a 1st inning 3-run HR in a 5-3 victory by the Blue Jays over the Rays

The Blue Jays continued the road trip opening a weekend series vs. the Rays. Last season, the Rays took 6 of the 10 games of the regular season series, but the Blue Jays outscored the Rays 48-44. The Rays also swept the Blue Jays 2-0 in the WC series. It was the Blue Jays 1st time making the postseason since 2016 when they were eliminated in 5 games by the WS runners-up Cleveland Indians. Tonight featured a battle of pitchers off to hot starts. Steven Matz won his first three starts and last start he took a no-hitter into the 6th inning before giving up a pair of runs on a 2-run HR by Salvador Perez. Tyler Glasnow came into tonight's tilt with a 2-0 record and a sparkling 0.73ERA. Tyler Chatwood was activated from the 10-day IL, Travis Bergen was recalled from the Alternate training site. Anthony Kay was optioned to the aternate training site. Tanner Roark was placed on the family medical emergency list. Cavan Biggio got the start in RF. Rowdy Tellez served as DH tonight. Joe Panik was at the hot corner and Randal Grichuk was in CF. Could the Blue Jays make it two wins in a row? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Rowdy Tellez doubled home Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • Two batters later, Marcus Semien whacked a three-run blast to dead center also scoring Randal Grichuk and Tellez
  • The Rays got three runs back in the bottom of the 5th on a three-run bomb to dead center by Randy Arozarena that also scored Kevin Kiermaier and Yandy Diaz
  • Steven Matz pitching line: 5IP 5H 3R (all earned) 2BB 7K 87 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 6th as Grichuk smashed a solo blast to dead center
  • Tyler Glasnow pitching line: 6IP 5H 5R (all earned) 2BB 10K 94 pitches (62 for strikes)
  • Rafael Dolis pitched a perfect 9th for his 1st save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 5 Rays 3

My Take:

  • Steven Matz had his roughest start in a Blue Jays uniform. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 7. The big hit was the 3-run blast in the 5th that whittled the lead to a run. The Rays got lots of hard contact against the south paw, who did not have his best stuff. He was pitching on 4 days rest, although he only threw 82 pitches Monday
  • Tyler Chatwood threw an inning in relief in his return from a strained triceps muscle, walking 1 and striking out 1
  • The middle of the lineup did the damage offensively, highlighted by a Marcus Semien 3-run shot that gave the Blue Jays a 4-0 cushion, that would hold up in the end. Randal Grichuk provided an insurance run in the 6th with a solo shot to center
  • Danny Jansen was 0-3 with 2 strikeouts today, dropping his average to .054. To put into perspective, even Ryan Dempster, who had a notoriously bad swing in his playing days, had a better career average (.099). If this continues, the Blue Jays may play Alejandro Kirk more or look to get another catcher.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays continue the weekend series in Tampa Bay. Robbie Ray will be looking for a better outing than last Sunday, when he walked a career-high six batters. The Rays will counter with righty Brent Honeywell Jr.

Game #18 Toronto Blue Jays (8-10) @ Boston Red Sox (12-7) - game recap

Ryan Boruxki threw two clutch innings in relief in a 6-3 victory over the Red Sox to earn a split in the 2-game series

The Blue Jays wrapped up a mini two game series vs. the Red Sox. They have been slogging through a slew of injuries to their pitchers, which now includes enough players to fill a bullpen. The offense has been puttering along to as they await the debut (hopefully) Friday of prize free agent signing George Springer. Trent Thornton got the start in what's expected to be a bullpen day. Cavan Biggio batted leadoff and was at the hot corner. The struggling Marcus Semien slid to 6th in the batting order. Rowdy Tellez DH'd tonight. Could the Blue Jays make it a series split? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Cavan Biggio
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 2nd on a sac fly by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. that scored Marcus Semien
  • Two batters later, Josh Palacios scored on a groundout by Biggio
  • A batter later, Bo Bichette singled scoring Jansen
  • Trent Thornton pitching line: 2IP 2H 0H 0R 0B 0K 25 pitches (18 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox got one back in the bottom of the 4th on a ground out by Rafael Devers that scored JD Martinez
  • Garrett Richards pitching line: 4.2IP 4H 4R (all earned) 6BB 2K 92 pitches (48 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox got one back in the bottom of the 5th as Enrique Hernandez doubled scoring Marwin Gonzalez
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 9th as Alejandro Kirk singled scoring Bichette
  • A batter later, Randal Grichuk singled home Guerrero Jr.
  • Anthony Castro got the final out for his 1st save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 6 Red Sox 3

My Take:

  • It was a bullpen day for the Blue Jays and they got mixed results tonight. Trent Thornton allowed a pair of hits over 2 innings. He induced a DP to get out of the 1st inning and stranded Devers on second after he hit a one-out double. Tommy Milone was next up and he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 4 over 2.1 innings. David Phelps then came in and got the final 2 outs of the 5th inning, but not before conceding a run on a ground out and walking a batter. Ryan Borucki was excellent over 2 innings, allowing a hit and walking a batter while striking out 2. Rafael Dolis continues to struggle getting through an inning efficiently. He gave up a solo shot to Devers to make it a 1 run game and thanks to a throwing error by Biggio, the Red Sox had the go-ahead run on 2B with 2 outs. Tim Mayza retired two of the three batters he faced and Castro got the final out.
  • Offensively, the Blue Jays jumped all over Red Sox starter Garrett Richards, tagging him for 4 runs over the first 2 innings. Alejandro Kirk and Randal Grichuk both hit clutch RBI singles in the 9th to give the Blue Jays a three-run cushion
  • With three closers injured (Kirby Yates, Julian Merryweather and Jordan Romano) the Blue Jays are likely going to utilize a closer by committee. Tonight, Mayza got a chance to record his first career save, but Charlie Montoyo opted to turn to righty Anthony Castro to get the final out with the Red Sox big bats coming up.
  • Cavan Biggio drew a pair of walks and scored a run in the lead-off spot. Marcus Semien, demoted from the lead-off spot, was 2-4, drew a walk and scored a run
  • Danny Jansen's average continues to plummet. He was 0-3, but drew a walk and scored a run
  • Up next, after a travel day/off day the Blue Jays open a weekend series against the Rays. The Rays won 6 of the 10 meetings between the squads last season, but the Blue Jays outscored the Rays 48-44 in season series. Friday night, Blue Jays batters will be facing Rays ace Tyler Glasnow, who has been lights out to start the season. The Blue Jays have not named a starter yet.

Game #17 Toronto Blue Jays (7-10) @ Boston Red Sox (12-6) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a pair of hits, including a solo shot and drew a walk as the Red Sox doubled up on the Blue Jays 4-2

The slumping Blue Jays limped into Boston today having lost three of their last four games. They opened a mini 2 game set versus the red-hot Boston Red Sox at Fenway park. Last season, the Red Sox and Blue Jays split the 10 games with each team winning 5 times and the Blue Jays outscored the Red Sox 58-50. Boston finished last in the AL East last season with a record of 24-36 and now they are first in the AL East with a 11-6 record. The Blue Jays made the playoffs last season with a record of 32-28 and were ousted in the WC round 2-0 by the Rays. So far this season, the Blue Jays are 4th in the AL East with a record of       7-9, 3.5 games back of the Red Sox. TJ Zeuch (right shoulder tendinitis)  joined a growing list of injured pitchers that now includes Ross Stripling, Julian Merryweather, Kirby Yates (out for year), Tyler Chatwood, Patrick Murphy, Thomas Hatch, Nate Pearson, and Jordan Romano. Tonight featured a battle of the aces and southpaws as Hyun-Jin Ryu and Eduardo Rodriguez took the ball first for their respective teams. Ryu has a history of better starts on extra rest. Randal Grichuk was in CF today. Cavan Biggio was back in the lineup after recovering from a minor injury and was in RF. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was back in LF after a day off Monday. Vlad was back in the field @ 1B after serving as DH  Monday (Alejandro Kirk served as DH today. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after the day off Monday. Espinal Santiago got the start at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays snap the 2 game losing streak? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 4th as Bo Bichette smacked a solo blast over the green monster in left
  • The Red Sox took the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Xander Bogaerts hammered a three-run bomb to left-center and over the green monster also scoring JD Martinez and Christian Marwin
  • Four batters later, Bobby Dalbec tripled home Marwin Gonzalez
  • Hyun-Jin Ryu pitching line: 5IP 8H 4R (all earned) 0BB 2K 83 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • Eduardo Rodriguez pitching line: 6IP 3H 2R (both earned) 1BB 6K 90 pitches (62 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 7th as Randal Grichuk smacked one over the green monster in left
  • Matt Barnes pitched a scoreless 9th for his 3rd save of the season
  • Final score:  Red Sox 4 Blue Jays 2

My Take:

  • The extra day of rest did not benefit Hyun-Jin Ryu on this day. He had one bad inning in the 4th where he gave up 4 runs on 5 hits. He was ver.10.y efficient the first three innings, taking just 29 pitches to get through the first two innings. It was essentially one bad inning that did him in. Unfortunately for Ryu, his fastball wasn't there with the velocity down to 88mph from around 90mph and that made a huge difference.
  • Danny Jansen continues to struggle offensively. He was 0-3 tonight, dropping his average to a miniscule .065
  • Vlad and Grich were literally the offensive. Both hit solo shots over the green monster and added one more hit each. Vlad also drew a 1st inning walk Marcus Semien also drew a walk in the 8th inning. Sorry, but that's not going to cut it most nights. The Blue Jays desperately need George Springer to make his season debut and Teoscar Hernandez to recover from COVID-19
  • The Blue Jays were 0-1 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to earn a split in this mini 2-game series. Blue Jays batters will face Red Sox righty Garrett Richard. The Blue Jays have not named a starting pitcher. It might be a bullpen day for them

Game #16 Toronto Blue Jays (7-9) @ Kansas City Royals (9-5) - game recap

Alejandro Kirk drew a pair of walks and made a couple of nice blocks in a 2-0 shutout loss to the Royals

After splitting a double-header yesterday, the Blue Jays and Royals were back at it with a matinee to wrap up the four game series. Big non-Blue Jays news. Jay Bruce retired from baseball today following the Yankees-Rays tilt. He was not in the starting lineup today. Robbie Ray got the start, as did his personal catcher Alejandro Kirk. Joe Panik was at the hot corner. Vlad got the half day off, serving as the DH with Rowdy Tellez at 1B. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. got the complete day off with Josh Palacios in LF. Could the Blue Jays win and earn a series split? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • Robbie Ray pitching line: 5IP 4H 0R 6BB 3K 92 pitches (52 for strikes)
  • Brady Singer pitching line: 6IP 2H 0R 3BB 6K 90 pitches (55 for strikes)
  • The Royals opened the scoring in the bottom of the 7th as Salvador Perez clobbered a 2-run bomb to left-center and into the waterfall; also scoring Carlos Santana
  • Greg Holland pitched a perfect 9th for his 2nd save of the season
  • Final score: Royals 2 Blue Jays 0

My Take:

  • Robbie Ray had a rough outing, but was effectively wild. He didn't allow a run, but he walked a season-high 6 batters and scattered 4 hits over 5 innings. The walks really drove up the pitch count and a depleted bullpen was forced to get 9 outs
  • TJ Zeuch had another rough inning, giving up a 2-run blast that was the difference in the game
  • Tanner Roark had a decent inning of work, walking one and striking out one. Hopefully he gains some confidence being used in lower leverage situations out of the bullpen
  • Offensively, it was not a good day for the Blue Jays. They were held to five total base runners over the first four innings. They had runners on 1st and 2nd innings 2-4, but did nothing with it. After the 4th inning, the Blue Jays did not get one single base runner, recording  15 straight outs. Alejandro Kirk was the only one to get on base more than once, drawing 2 walks.
  • Up next, after an off day tomorrow, the Blue Jays head to Fenway park for a brief two game set vs. the Red Sox, who were 1st in the AL East heading into today's action with a 10-6 record. This comes after the Red Sox were horrible in 2020. Last season, the Blue Jays and Red Sox split the season series 5-5 with the Blue Jays outscoring the Red Sox 58-50. Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the start Tuesday against an unannounced Red Sox pitcher.

Games #14 and 15 Toronto Blue Jays (7-8) @ Kansas City Royals (8-5) - game recap records reflect what it was after the second game

Steven Matz threw 6 strong innings as the Blue Jays took the first game of today's double-header. The Royals won the second game in the bottom of the 7th with a walk-off HR by Salvador Perez to edge the Blue Jays 3-2. The Royals will be looking to take the four-game series with a win tomorrow

After a rain-out, the Blue Jays played their first double header of the year (last Sunday's game vs. the LA Angels was also rained out but will be made up in August). The temporary rules of double header games being seven innings each has carried over to this season. The Blue Jays lost the first game of the series Thursday as Anthony Kay was knocked around to the tune of 5 runs (4 earned) over 3.1 innings. Tanner Roark, relegated to the bullpen after a rough start, was also charged with a pair of unearned runs. In the 1st game, Steven Matz made his 3rd start of the season. Tommy Millone made a spot start in the second game. Danny Jansen got the first game behind the plate and Alejandro Kirk started the second game as the backstop after serving as the DH in the 1st game. Santiago Espinal was at the hot corner in the 1st game. Jonathan Davis got the start in CF in the 1st game and Randal Grichuk was in RF. Everyone else was in their usual position and spot in the lineup in the 1st game. After being in the field in game 1, Vlad got the half day off in the 2nd game, serving as the DH, with Rowdy Tellez playing 1B. Randal Grichuk got the 2nd game completely off with Josh Palacios in his spot in RF. Joe Panik got the start at the hot corner in the 2nd game. The rest of the lineup was the same as game 1 and the regular lineup. Could the Blue Jays sweep the double-header (or at least earn the split)? Here are today's game recaps.

Game Highlights (1st game):

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled home Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Randal Grichuk
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 5th as Jonathan Davis smacked a solo shot to left and into the Royals bullpen
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 6th as Guerrero Jr. whacked a solo shot to left and into the Royals bullpen
  • Mike Minor pitching line: 5.2IP 7H 4R (all earned) 0BB 3K 99 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • The Royals got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Andrew Benintendi doubled home Nicky Lopez
  • Steven Matz pitching line: 6IP 2H 1R (earned) 2BB 5K 82 pitches (48 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 7th on a sac fly by Marcus Semien that scored Davis
  • Final Score: Blue Jays 5 Royals 1

My take (1st game);

  • Steven Matz pitched another gem, tossing 6 innings of 2 hit ball, giving up a run, walking 2 and striking out 5.. He carried a no-hitter through five innings, gave up a run on two hits and was promptly pulled in the 7th. He should have been given the opportunity to start the 7th. I mean, he has already thrown 90+ pitches in a start, he had a 4-run lead and if the Blue Jays were worried about him, they could have had someone like Rafael Dolis,ho did not throw a strike to the first two hitters he faced, issuing a 4-pitch walk to Carlos Santana and  then hitting Jorge Soler with the next pitch, warming up behind him. I miss the old days when pitchers were at least allowed to start the next inning if they had under 100 pitches. Also, you have to consider how stressful the pitches were. Matz only had to contend with base runners in three of the six innings he worked (a 1st inning walk that was quickly erased by a double play, a one out walk to Soler in the 5th and a pair of hits in the 6th that led to the only run he gave up. Matz retired 12 batters in a row at one point. Besides, Charlie Montoyo only has to look at the last game of the world series when his protégé John Madden pulled starter Blake Snell, who was also pitching a gem, in the 6th inning only to see the bullpen give up a pair of runs and really cost the Rays their first world series. Trust your starters and let them keep going when they are cruising.
  • Vladimir Guerrero (solo HR, 2 runs scored, RBI), Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (2 run double), Jonathan Davis (solo HR, 2 hits, SB) and Randal Grichuk (2 hits and a run scored) carried the offense and had strong games offensively
  • Danny Jansen's having a rough season offensively. He was 0-3 today and is now batting a miniscule .072.
  • Up next, game two of the double header. Tommy Millone got the spot start against Royals righty Ervin Santana
Game highlights (2nd game):

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd as Alejandro Kirk doubled home Josh Palacios
  • The Royals tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd as Jarrod Dyson scored on a throwing error by Rowdy Tellez
  • Two batters later, Carlos Santana doubled home Benintendi
  • Tommy Millone pitching line: 2.1IP 3H 2R (both earned) 0BB 4K 39 pitches (26 for strikes)
  • Ervin Santana pitching line: 3IP 2H 1R (earned) 0BB 1K 36 pitches  (25 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of  the 4th on a sac fly by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. that scored Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • The Royals walked it off in the bottom of the 7th as Salvador Perez hammered a solo bomb to dead centerS
  •  Final score: Royals 3 Blue Jays 2

My Take (2nd game):

  • Tommy Millone threw 2.1 innings, giving up a pair of runs on a throwing error and a double. He gave up 3 hits overall, walked none and struck out 4. Charlie Montoyo was displaying a quick hook today, earlier pulling Steven Matz, who was tossing a gem and had a decent pitch count. Perhaps Montoyo was hoping Millone might be available tomorrow if Robbie Ray, starting his second game coming off an elbow contusion, can't go very deep
  • Let's address Cava Biggio's getting thrown out trying to advance on a a wild pitch. It's a judgment call whether a player advances on a wild pitch. Biggio felt that he could make it, but Royals catcher Cam Gallagher made a great play
  • Another continuous issue I want to address is bunting. It is a good strategy and can lead to a multi-run inning. For example, say you got runners on 1st and second with nobody out and the top of the order due up. Why not get Danny Jansen or Jonathan Davis to drop down a bunt to move the runners up a base? That gives Semien a chance to drive in at least one run and then Biggio could knock in the other run with a base hit. I agree that bunting with 2 strikes is unwise. Bunt should be taken off with two strikes and batter should just swing away because if the ball is bunted foul with 2 strikes, the batter is out. Look at Ichiro, he regularly bunted to get on base. Speedy runners should be allowed to drop down a bunt every so often to get on base.
  • Re: the use of pitchers today: Matz should have been allowed to start the 7th. The Blue Jays are in a situation where they are closing by committee. Ken Giles is now a Seattle Mariner (he would have missed the season anyway after TJ surgery). Kirby Yates is gone for the year after TJ surgery. Julian Merryweather is on the IL. As are Tyler Chatfield and Jordan Romano. Rafael Dolis, having had previous closing experience with the Cubs, is likely to be the go to, but it may depend on what part of the lineup is up. Dolis is unreliable and isn't the most efficient getting batters out, typically taking about 20 pitches to get through an inning. Today, he didn't throw a single strike to the first 2 hitters he faced. David Phelps or Tim Mayza could be asked to close, depending on the situation. Besides, Joel Payamps is supposed to be a pro and should be able to handle that type of situation. He just made a bad pitch and that was unfortunately the ball game
  • Rowdy Tellez was the only Blue Jay to reach base more than once in this game
  • Up next, the Blue Jays wrap up this series with a matinee before their first off-day of the season Monday. Lefty Robbie Ray gets his second start of the season. He gave up a pair of runs over 5 innings in his first start of the season. The Royals will counter with righty Brady Singer.

Game #12 - New York Yankees (5-6) vs Toronto Blue Jays (5-6) - Wednesday April 14 @ 1:07pm EST

New York Yankees (SP Corey Kluber - 0-1)

Yankee Scumbag Roughned Odor

vs.

Toronto Blue Jays (SP Ross Stripling - 0-1)

Jim Clancy

There's something we don't talk about enough here at JITH - a topic near and dear to my heart and one that I strongly feel deserves some extra attention today.  Roughned Odor is, as a ballplayer, absolute garbage.  Trash!  Given his comportment on the field, we can all also draw our own conclusions as to his character or lack thereof!

If Odor were in the Harry Potter world, Lord Voldemort would fatally attack him, disgusted at his lack of courage and production.

Lord Voldemort performs the Avada Kedavra curse on Roughned Odor

It is my contention that Odor will play himself out of the lineup.  I don't know who the Yankees have to replace him (and I assume it must be "nobody" for them to have picked him up in the first place) but that unnamed 2nd baseman will kick Odor out for good in the near term!

Now, for some Jays I've loved over the years:

George Bell

Dave Stieb

Fred McGriff

To be continued.......

Scuttlebutt

The Jays, coming off a solid outing against the hated Yankees, look to take the series victory in an early game (10:07am Pacific!).  Vladimir Guerrero Jr. continues to own a hot bat to start the season and is taking his share of walks, all while providing steady defense at 1st base.  He is doing the splits a lot and I'm not sure if that's good or indicates that his positioning or footwork could be improved.  He seems to be very flexible (I would pass on, triggering a transfer of my baseball cards to Smasher/Catcher from my estate, if I tried to do the splits).

Meanwhile, Bo Bichette is having a decent campaign but has struggled a bit at times - nothing to worry about and he is producing at a satisfactory rate.  I'm hoping to see more from Biggio and Gurriel Jr - it's time for them to heat up!

In sobering news, Teoscar Hernandez has tested positive for Covid-19 and is out for 10 days minimum.  It sounds as though he has symptoms but is doing fine - we hope for a speedy recovery and also hope that it did not spread to any of his teammates.

Let's Play Ball - Go Jays Go!

Game #11 NY Yankees (5-6) @ Toronto Blue Jays (5-6) - game recap

Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched into the 7th as the Blue Jays knocked off the Yankees 7-3

After a tough loss to Yankees ace Gerritt Cole, who retired the last fifteen Blue Jays batters he faced, the Blue Jays were looking to even the series with a win, sending their own ace Hyun-Jin Ryu to the mound. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after the night off yesterday. The Blue Jays were facing a pitcher, Jameson Taillon, who missed almost two seasons after a complex TJ surgery, much like Tim Mayza endured. I have a lot of respect for athletes that persevere through such a lengthy rehab and make it back to their former glory. Only Joe Panik and Randal Grichuk have ever faced this pitcher. The rest of the lineup remains the same as yesterday. Can Ryu stop the bleeding and get his team back to winning? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Josh Palacios singled home Randal Grichuk and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 3rd on a sac fly by Randal Grichuk that scored Bo Bichette
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Marcus Semien whacked a solo shot to left
  • Two batters later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled scoring Bichette
  • Jameson Taillon pitching line: 3.2IP 8H 5R (all earned) 1BB 3K 84 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 5th as Rowdy Tellez smash a solo bomb to right-center
  • The Yankees got one back in the top of the 7th on a groundout by Rougned Odor that scored Gary Sanchez
  • Hyun-Jin Ryu pitching line: 6.2IP 4H 1R (unearned) 1BB 7K 95 pitches (68 for strikes)
  • The Yankees got a pair back in the top of the 8th as Giocarlo Stanton singled scoring DJ Le Mahieu and Clint Frazier
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom half of the inning as Palacios scored on a sac fly by Bichette
  • Bichette and Guerrero Jr. both made outstanding plays on the final out
  • Final score: Blue Jays 7 Yankees 3

My Take:

  •  Hyun-Jin Ryu had his third straight quality start, allowing an unearned run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 7. Ryu allowed 2 base runners through five innings and retired 11 in a row at one point. He was efficient as well, averaging about 12 pitches an inning. Can't stress enough what a great signing Ryu has turned out to be
  • Rowdy Tellez doubled his offensive output for the season, getting his second hit and home run on a solo shot.
  • Every Blue Jays starter reached base at least once and all but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Danny Jansen had at least one hit
  • Up next, the Blue Jays wrap up the series and homestand with a matinee vs. the Yankees. Blue Jays righty Ross Stripling goes up against Yankees righty Corey Kluber. The winner tomorrow will move out of the basement in the AL East standings. After tonight's games, there is a four-way tie for 2nd with the Yankees, Blue Jays, Rays and Orioles all having identical 5-6 records. The Red Sox, after being last in the AL East last season, are currently 1st in the AL East with a record of 7-3

Game #11 - New York Yankees (5-5) at Toronto Blue Jays (4-6) - Tuesday April 13 @ 7:07pm EST

New York Yankees (SP Jameson Taillon)

vs.

Toronto Blue Jays (SP Hyun Jin Ryu)

There is a single area where we can agree that the Yankees have been a better franchise than the Blue Jays - they have had better and more iconic baseball cards!  This is strictly because the franchise has been around for longer - no other reason!

We start with Babe Ruth.  He is featured in the 1933 Goudey set, one of the card issues considered a pillar of the hobby.  Babe was featured on 4 cards in the set and it is for this reason that I will never be able to afford to finish it

Here's Lou Gehrig, pictured on his 1927 W461 Exhibit card.  These were produced to be sold out of vending machines

That's it - I don't feel like typing or grabbing pictures anymore!  I absolutely, 100%, steadfastly refuse to do it!  I cannot be induced, by any means, to do so!  I'm out!

Jays News

After last night's horrible loss, the Jays look to get back on the saddle and put things right in the Universe by toppling the Yankees and getting back on even footing in the standings.  Speaking of the Universe, it is so large as to boggle the mind.  It's almost impossible to conceive of it.  Given the trillions of stars and planets, I suspect there are other planets where events have unfolded in an almost identical way as on Earth but Joe Mcd. and Dabbles play for the Jays instead of Bo and Vlad Jr.  I wonder if they could have pulled this one out for the Jays?

This will be my last game thread - I'm going to get my dog to write the next one

Game #10 - New York Yankees (4-5) at Toronto Blue Jays (4-5) - Monday April 12 @ 7:07pm EST

New York Yankees (SP Gerrit Cole)

vs. Toronto Blue Jays (SP Robbie Ray)

Good afternoon baseball fans and welcome to Harlans Point Stadium, where the Toronto Blue Jays begin their home schedule after a long layoff due to the pandemic of 1918.  The visiting Yankees, having only changed their name a few years back (they are the formerly hated Highlanders) will be trying to avenge the series win the Jays took in the first week of the season.

Excitement abounds to see the wonders in store at newly renovated Harlans Point Stadium - I have obtained an unreleased photo showing some of the new features:

Moving on to some history, let's take a look back at the first great Highlanders star, Hal Chase.  Chase was almost unanimously  regarded as one of the greatest 1st basemen of his generation and even of all time.  In true Yankee fashion, though, he was a degenerate scumbag, cheater, and a gambler.  He was widely known to gamble on his own games and was believed to have regularly thrown games due to his ongoing affliction.  I imagine being one of the greatest fielding 1st basemen of all time and then throwing games on purpose makes it sort of obvious.  Perhaps this wasn't the smartest approach but I suppose there was no real way to stop his nefarious behaviour in the early part of the century.

Hal Chase - First in a long line of Yankee Scumbags!

It wasn't known at the time but Chase couldn't help himself, as he was the first in a long, long line of degenerate, Yankee scum!

Scuttlebutt

The Jays started the year with a series victory over the Yankees, proving that they would be a playoff team.  They then scuffled a bit, proving that they would not make the cut.  However, the last game against the Angels, where the Jays scored 15, proved that they will not only break offensive records but will be a modern day Murderers Row, despite missing several key pieces.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has started the year on fire, hitting .379 with a .538 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.159.  He's taking walks, scorching the ball (often up the middle or to right) and has shown vastly improved defensive play at first base.  He is also noticeably quicker on the base paths, having reportedly dropped 40 pounds over the winter.  He's playing at the level we all thought he would and if he can keep up anything close to it he'll become the superstar we thought he would be.

Robbie Ray has been cleared to play and will reportedly make his season debut Monday.  He showed increased velocity this spring and was highly effective. His signing took a lot of heat in these parts but if he can be a serviceable starter all will be forgiven.  The great news that relates to his return is that failed starter Tanner Roarke will move to the bullpen, where he can hopefully either improve or else provide mop-up duty in games that are already a lost cause (Dabbles would say all of them are!)

If Pearson can get healthy and come back to have a solid year then the rotation will be shaping up nicely and this squad could content for the postseason.

Rougned Odor was inexplicably claimed by the Yankees and immediately went on to drive home the winning run in extra innings.  I firmly believe that this will be the pinnacle of his Yankees career and the club will quickly tire of his poor attitude and poor play!

Let's Play Ball!

Game 9 game thread - Angels at Dunedin

At TD Ballpark

Game #8 LA Angels (6-2) @ Toronto Blue Jays (3-5) - game recap

Marcus Semien scored the only Blue Jays run in a 7-1 loss to the Angels

After a tough extra innings loss last night, the Blue Jays were back at it, looking for their first home win of the season. George Springer, who's dealing with a low grade quad injury, is likely out for at least the duration of this home stand as the Blue Jays exercise extreme caution with their prize signing of the off-season. The Blue Jays had a bullpen day with David Phelps getting the start. There is a bit of uncertainty in the rotation after Tanner Rourke had a rough start last time out an2nd d Ross Stripling was knocked around last night. TJ Zeuch was expected to eat up the bulk of the innings tonight. Teoscar Hernandez (exposure to COVID-19), Ryan Borucki (side effect to COVID-19 vaccine) and Tyler Chatwood (undisclosed) were put on the 10 day IL. Josh Palacios, Ty Tice, and Joel Payamps were recalled from the alternate training site. Palacios got the start in RF and batted 9th. Charlie Montoyo shuffled the lineup around moving Cavan Biggio to 5th in the lineup. Randal Grichuk, who got the half day off as DH, was batting 2nd. Jonathan Davis got the start in CF and batted 7th. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was hitting cleanup and played 1B. Alejandro Kirk was behind the plate and batted 8th. Marcus Semien was in his usual leadoff spot and was at 2B. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. batted 5th and was in LF. Could the Blue Jays even the first home stand of the season? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • David Phelps pitching line: 1IP 0H 0R 1BB 2K 20 pitches (9 for strikes)
  • The Angels opened the scoring in the top of 2nd the as Jared Walsh scored on a fielder's choice hit by David Fletcher. Dexter Fowler was injured on the play.
  • A batter later, Shohei Ohtani doubled home Max Stassi, Jose Rojas and Fletcher
  • The Angels added a run in the top of the 5th as Ohtani hammered a solo blast to dead center
  • Three batters later, Walsh crushed a 2-run bomb to right, also scoring Mike Trout
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 8th on a wild pitch by Chris Rodriguez
  • Lourdes Gurriel Jr. left the game due to a reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine
  • Final score: Angels 7 Blue Jays 1

My Take:

  • David Phelps did his job, pitching a scoreless 1st inning, walking one and striking out 2. He wasn't super efficient, taking 20 pitches to get through the inning. As expected, TJ Zeuch was next man up, and he had a rough 2nd inning, giving up 4 runs (none earned) on 3 hits and a  fielding error by Bichette. In the 3rd inning, Zeuch proceeded to walk the first 2 batters on 9 pitches. In the 5th, he gave up 3 runs on a pair of HR. Would Zeuch have fared better if he had started? Hard to say, but the mentality of coming out of the bullpen is different than starting. Zeuch is a starter and probably should have been first up.
  • There has to be a bit of concern surrounding the COVID-19 and the side effects experienced by Ryan Borucki and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
  • The bats were pretty quit tonight, manufacturing a run on a wild pitch. The top 4 in the batting order (Semien, Grichuk, Bichette and Guerreo Jr.) each reached base at least once Everyone else, except Cavan Biggio, who drew 2 walks, were kept off the basepath. .
  • Marcus Semien has been the most consistent leadoff hitter in recent memory. He had a pair of hits tonight and scored the only Blue Jays run on a wild pitch
  • The Blue Jays were 0-6 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to snap the 4-game losing streak. Angels southpaw Jose Quintana will start against an unknown Blue Jays pitcher

Game #7 LA Angels (5-2) @ Toronto Blue Jays (3-4) - game recap

Vladimir  Guerrero Jr was 2-4 with a run scored and 3RBI in a losing effort as the Angels knocked off the Blue Jay 5-3 in 11 innings

After a decent road trip where the Blue Jays won the season opening series vs. the Yankees and dropped two of three to the Rangers, the Blue Jays opened the home portion of their schedule. Like last season, they will begin the home schedule in Dunedin (last year they played in Buffalo). Buffalo will be playing in NJ to accommodate the Blue Jays if they can't play in Toronto by end of May. Tonight, the Blue Jays opened  4-game series vs. the LA Angels. The last time these two teams met, the Angels won 6 of the 7 games in the season series. Ross Stripling faced a critical start with Robbie Ray nearing a return from an elbow contusion from a fall down a flight of stairs. Marcus Semien got the half day off, serving as the DH. Joe Panik got the start at 2B. Could the Blue Jays make it a win on the home opener? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Angels opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Anthony Rendon singling home Mike Trout
  • The Blue Jays answered back in the bottom half of the inning as Teoscar Hernandez singled home Cavan Biggio
  • A batter later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hammered a 2-run bomb to dead center, also scoring Hernandez
  • The Angels got one back in the top of the 2nd as Jose Iglesias doubled scoring Justin Upton
  • Three batters later David Fletcher doubled home Iglesias
  • Ross Stripling pitching line: 5IP 6H 4R (all earned) 1BB 5K 70 pitches (46 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom of the 6th as Cavan Biggio smacked a solo blast to right-center
  • Three batters later, Guerrero Jr. singled home Bo Bichette
  • Griffin Canning pitching line: 5.1IP 3H 4R (all earned) 1BB 7K 81 pitches (51 for strikes)
  • The Angels tied in the top of the 7th as Trout annihilated a moon shot to left-center and out of the ballpark
  • The Angels retook the lead in the top of the 11th as Fletcher singled home Iglesias and Upton
  • Raisel Iglesias pithed a perfect 11th, striking out the side for his 2nd save of the season
  • Final score: Angels 7 Blue Jays 5
My Take:
  • Ross Stripling pitched his way in and out of trouble over 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5. Lots of hard contact and multi-base hits. As mentioned in the preamble, this was an important start for the Blue Jays righty with Robbie Ray close to returning. It will likely be him or Tanner Rourke sent to the taxi squad when a roster spot needs opening
  • Marcus Semien continues to be hot and cold. He was 0-5 with a pair of strikeouts
  • Every starter, except Semien, Randal Grichuk and Danny Jansen had at least one hit
  • Up next, the series continues with the Angels will send lefty Andrew Heaney to the bump. The Blue Jays haven't named a starting pitcher.
