Game #110 - St. Louis Cardianals (54-56) @ Toronto Blue Jays (51-59) - game recap

Luis Urias knocked in a pair of runs in a 3-1 comeback win over the Cardinals

After an off-day yesterday, the Blue Jays opened a brief weekend home stand against the Cardinals as they began a stretch of 17 straight days of games (due to making up JAune 21st's rainout in Chicago next Thursday). The Blue Jays swept the season series last year, outscoring the Cardinals 20-15. Brayden Fisher was reinstated from the Bereavement leave list and Adam Mackowas optioned to AAA-ball. Jesus Sanchez was reinstated from the 10-day IL (and got the start in LF) and Yohendrick Pinago was optioned to AAA-ball. No trades yet. Dylan Cease got the start with Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate. Vlad was back in the lineup at 1B after missing Wednesday's game with right hamstring tightness. Kazuma Okamoto was back at the hot corner and Ernie Clement got the start at 2B. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 2 games and start the August long weekend with a win? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Cardinals opened the scoring in the top of the 5th as Jordan Walker singled Nathan Church
  • The Blue Jays tied it in the bottom half of the inning as Kazuma Okamoto doubled scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • Dylan Cease pitching line: 6IP 3H 1R (earned) 3BB 7K 96 pitches (57 for strikes)
  • Kyle Leahy pitching linec" 6IP 6H 1R (earned) 1BB 3K 98 pitches (61 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the bottom of the 8th as Luis Urias singled scoring George Springer and Daulton Varsho
  • Louis Varland threw a scoreless 9th for his 24th save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 3 Cardinals 1
My Take:

  • Dylan Cease followed up his complete game 1-hitter with a solid start where he gave up a run on 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 7. While he dealt with base runners in most innings, he was able to pitch his way out of jams. The torque he gets in his windup really helpsas minimize the batters opportunity to figure out what type of pitch is coming their way.
  • The bullpen threw 3 scoreless innings, giving up a pair of hits while walking none and strikng out 4. Jeff Hoffman, who could be on the move at the trade deadline Monday, retired every batter he fsced. Hoffman would likely welcomr s change of scenery. Hoffman was credited with the win.
  • Offensively, Kazuma Okamoto and Luis Urias, who came off the bench to pinch hit for Davis Schneider, came up with clutch hits to lead the Blue Jays to victory.
  • Brandon Valenzuela was unsuccessful on the only ABS challenge of the day.
  • The Blue Jays were 2-10 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 3 games and notch their 14th series win and 15th series win of the season. Kevin Gausman is scheduled to start against Cardinals lefty Quinn Mathews but that could change if he is traded or a deal is close around game time.

Game #110 - St. Louis Cardinals (54-55) @ Toronto Blue Jays (50-59)

Drugs are bad...Mmmm'Kay?

The Jays are back home for a mini three game set versus St. Louis.

When they return from the upcoming seven game road trip they might look like a very different team.

They have a good shot at making it a two game winning streak with Dylan on the bump...unless the offence does the usual.

So sit back and enjoy perhaps the last glimpse of some of your favourite Jays.

Game #108 - Toronto Blue Jays (49-59) @ Washington Nationals (55-53) - game recap

George Springer hit a 3-run HR in an 8-6 loss to the Nationals

After pulling off a win yesterday thanks to a solid effort from the bullpen and Myles Straw and Luis Urias providing the offense, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 13th series win and 5th season series win of the season. Shane Bieber got the start with Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate. Yohendrick Pinago was in LF. Ernie Clement was at the hot corner and Andres Gimenez got the start at SS. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 13th series win and 5th season series win of the season? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Nationals opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on a bases loaded walk to Keibert Ruiz that forced in James Wood
  • A batter later, Dylan Crews was forced in on a bases loaded walk to Daylen Lile
  • A batter after that, CJ Abrams scored on a sac fly by Nasim Nunez
  • Two batters later, Ruiz scored on a bases loaded walk to Jacob Young
  • Shane Bieber pitching line: 0.2IP 1H 4R (all earned) 6BB 0K 42 pitches (16 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 3rd as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Nathan Lukes. Nationals 3B Jorbit Vivas was charged with a throwing error on the play
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 4th on a ground out hit by Andres Gimenez that scored Brandon Valenzuela
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was removed from the game prior t-o the start of the bottom of the 4th with hamstring tightness
  • The Nationals added a run in the bottom half of the inning as Luis Garcia Jr. whacked a 2-run blast to right; also scoring Jacob Young
  • Three batters later, Crews hammered a solo bomb to dead center
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 5th as Kazuma Okamoto hammered a solo bomb to dead center
  • The Nationals added a run in the bottom half of the inning on a sac fly by Young that scored Liles
  • Cade Cavalli pitching line: 6IP 6H 3R (2 earned) 2BB 3K 98 pitches (64 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got 3 back in the top of the 8th as George Springer hammered a 3-run bomb to straightaway center; also scoring Okamoto and Lukes
  • Clayton Beeter pitched a perfect 9th for his 11th save of the season
  • Final score: Nationals 8 Blue Jays 6
My Take:

  • Shane Bieber was lit up for 4 runs on a hit while walking 6 and striking out none. He had absolutely no command of his pitches today and could be a real risk for someone who tries to acquire him at the deadline since he as been struggling all season with command. At the same time, he won the Cy Young award in 2020 and that will be attractive.
  • The bullpwn gave up 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6. The two relievers, who are partially responsible for the Blue Jays being in the position they are with with 6 blown saves between them, Jeff Hoffman and Brendon Litlle threw a combined 3.1 innings and struck out 6 batters. I can see CJ Van Eik being optioned tomorrow since he obviously won't be available after throwing 69 pitches.
  • The offence tried to do its part with George Springer hitting a huge 3-run bomb to dead center to put the Blue Jays within a pair of runs and 6 outs to work with. Alas, the next 6 batters went down in order. Kazuma Okamoto also went deep in his first AB after taking over for Vlad, who exited the game prior to the bottom of the 4th after tweaking his hamstring running the bases in the 3rd inning.
  • The Blue Jays were 1-2 on ABS challenges and the Nationals were 2-1 on ABS challenges
  • The Blue Jays were 1-6 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to end the road trip with a win and notch their 13th series win and 5th season series win of the season. Trey Yesavage starts against Nationals righty Zack Littell

Game #107 - Toronto Blue Jays (49-58) @ Washington Nationals (54-53) - game recap

Myles Straw scored a run and drove in a run in a 3-2 comeback win over the Nationals

After dropping yesterday's game due to another poor effort from the offense, the Blue Jays were looking to start the week with a win as they continued the road trip in Washington DC. The Blue Jays swept the season series vs. the Nationals, outscoring the Nationals 14-7 last season. Max Scherzer was reinstated from the 15-day IL (and got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate) and Brayden Fisher was placed on the bereavement list. Myles Straw got the start in LF. Could the Blue Jays  start the week with a win? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Nationals opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Luis Garcia Jr. doubled scoring Nasim Nunez
  • The Blue Jays tied it in the top of the 3rd as Luis Urias hammered a solo bomb to dead center
  • Two batters later, Ernie Clement doubled scoring Myles Straw
  • Eddy Yean pitching line: 2.1IP 3H 2R (both earned) 0BB 0K 20 pitches (15 for strikes)
  • Max Scherzer pitching line: 2.2IP 4H 1R (earned) 3BB 4K 75 pitches (44 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 4th as Straw singled scoring Kazuma Okamoto
  • The Nationals got one back in the bottom of the 5th as Andres Chapparo whacked a solo blast to left
  • Louis Varland threw a scoreless 9th for his 22nd save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 3 Nationals 2

My Take:

  • Max Scherzer battled through 2.2 innings, giving up a run on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4, Would an extra rehab start have made a difference in his next MLB start? Perhsaps, but not likely with the way his 2026 season has gone. He loaded the bases in the 1st inning but managed to escape that jam. Second inning, he ran into more trouble but limited the damage to a run. Quite frankly he should retire. He has battled injuries this year and has been very ineffective when he has pitched. If he's concerned about moving up another place on the all-time strikeout list, he's one start away with the 4 strikeouts he got today putting him one strikeout away from tying Walter Johnson, who had 3509 strkeouts.
  • The bullpen gave up a run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 9 over the last 6.2 innings. Mason Fluharty was credited with the win. Fluharty and Tyler Rogers both retired every batter they faced
  • Myles Straw (run scored, RBI) and Jose Urias (solo HR) drove the offense.
  • The Blue Jays were unsuccessful on boh ABS challenges. The Nationals were 1-1 on ABS challenges
  • The Blue Jays were 3-7 with runners in scoring position.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 13th series win and 5th season series win of the season. Shane Bieber starts against Nationals righty Cade Cavalli

Welcome...to Jurassic Park!!

Oops...I mean Nationals Park.

Tonight 42 year old Max Scherzer is starting so it was an honest mistake.

I guess we're just killin' time until the trade deadline.

One interesting thing to watch is the season strikeout record for hitters.

The current record is 170 jointly held by Matt Chapman and Jose Bautista.

Kaz Okamoto has a solid chance of topping that as he currently sits at 132.

Maybe they had nap before the game and will come out all guns a blazin' !

Game #106 - Toronto Blue Jays (48-58) @ Boston Red Sox (54-50) - game recap

Andres Gimenez drove in the Blue Jays only run in a 6-1 loss to the Red Sox

After a huge shutout win over the Red Sox thanks to a dominant complete game 1 hit shutout from Dylan Cease and a massive 3-run 3rd inning, part of a 5-run rally, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 2 game and notch their 13th series win and 4th season series win of the season. Kevin Gausman got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Davis Schneider was in LF.  Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 13th series win and 4th season series win of the season. Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Red Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd as Ceddanne Rafaela singled scoring Andruw Monasterio
  • The Red Sox added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th as Jarren Duran singled scoring Willson Contreras and Caleb Durbin
  • Ranger Suaurez pitching line: 4IP 4H 0R 0BB 6K 64 pitches (42 for strikes)
  • Kevin Gausman pitching line: 6IP 5H 3R (all earned) 1BB 6K 98 pitches (66 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th as Jahmai Jonesdoubled scoring Duran and Monasterio
  • Two batters later, Wilyer Abreu doubled home Jones
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 9th as Andres Gimenez singled scoring Daulton Varsho
  • Final score: Red Sox 6 Blue Jays 1

My Take:

  • Kevin Gausman battled through 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6. Gausman gave up runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. He retired 5 of the first 6 batters he faced. It's likely a contending team will acquire him for pitching depth.
  • The bullpen gave up 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1 over the last 2 innings. Two of the runs were charged to Brayden Fisher but lefty Brendon Little gave up the 2 run scoring hits. He is more consistent with getting the ball in the strike zone but batters aren't really being fooled by his pitches. Adam Macko also needs to adjust to the adjustments hitters are making against him.
  • Offensively, the bats did not come through despite numerous chances to score. Andres Gimenez was stranded on 2nd base with with Davis Schneider and Nathan Lukes bother struck out looking. In the 4th inning, Alejandro Kirk and George Springer hit back to back singles and neither scored. Schneider, Lukes and Vlad were a combined 0-10 with 5 strikeouts.
  • Alejandro Kirk was 2-1 on ABS challenges and the Red Sox were a perfect 3-3 on ABS challenges
  • The Blue Jays were 1-7 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays head to Washingtom DC to take on the Nationals. The Blue Jays swept the season series last year, outscoring the Nationals 14-7. Max Scherzer starts against Nationals lefty Andrew Alvarez

Game # 106 - Toronto Blue Jays (48-57) @ Boston Red Sox (53-50)

The sweet music hit a sour note during my tenure as a Jay...

Ok...that's a lot better!

Entertaining baseball at last...

Some offense and a good old fashioned complete game shutout.

Of note: Cease's arm didn't fall off or spontaneously combust from going the distance.

The Jays most likely are cooked playoff wise but there's still fun to be had from screwing up other teams plans.

Let's continue to do so with another win over the Sox.

Game #105 - Toronto Blue Jays (48-57) @ Boston Red Sox (53-50) - game recap

Dylan Cease threw a complete game shutout in a 6-0 shutout win over the Red Sox

After dropping the opening game in the series due to a bad inning from reliever CJ Van Elk, the Blue Jays were looking to even the series and avoid their 17th series loss of the season. Dylan Cease got the start with Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate. Yohendrick Pinago was in LF and Nathan Lukes was in RF. Andres Gimenez was at SS and Ernie Clement got the start at 2B. Could the Blue Jays even the series and avoid their 17th series loss of the season? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Nathan Lukes
  • Two batters later, George Springer belted a 3-run jack over the green monster in left; also scoring Guerrero Jr. and Kazuma Okamoto
  • Two batters later, Ernie Clement doubled scoring Daulton Varsho
  • Sonny Gray pitching line: 5IP 10H 5R (all earned) 0BB 3K 75 pitches (57 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 9th as Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Andres Gimenez
  • Dylan Cease pitching line: CG 9IP 1H 0R 3BB 3K 120 pitches (80 for strikes)
  • Final score: Blue Jays 6 Red Sox 0

My Take:

  • Dylan Cease fired a complete game shutout, giving up a hit, walking 3 and striking out 3. He was perfect through 4 innings and retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced. There were comcerns early on when his velocity was down significantly, but he made up for it with great command.
  • The best thing is the bullpen got a much needed day off
  • Offensively, George Springer went deep over the green monster for 3 runs, Vlad had a pair of clutch base hits and arguably the Blue Jays, most consistent hitter, Ernie Clement, capped off the 5-run 3rd inning with an RBI double
  • Every starter except Yohendrick Pinago and Brandon Valenzuela had a hit and either scored a run or drove in a run
  • The Red Sox were  0-2 on ABS challenges and Brandon Valenzuela successfully overturned the Blue Jays only ABS challenge
  • The Blue Jays were 4-10 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 13th series win and 5th season series win of the season. Kevin Gausman starts against Red Sox lefty Ranger Suarez

Game # 105 - Toronto Blue Jays (47-57) @ Boston Red Sox (53-49)

I knew I should have joined my brothers' group...

Welp...we got a little bit of offense to watch last night.

Unfortunately the Jays also lost.

So with that one game winning streak kaput, Dylan will take to the mound hoping to put a Cease to this current one game skid...

Cease might be the one reason left to watch the Jays at the moment.

So for our sake I hope he's on fire today...enjoy the game!

Game #104 - Toronto Blue Jays (47-57) @ Boston Red Sox (53-49) - game recap

Kazuma Okamoto hit a 3-run HR, his 23rd of the season and the most HR by a rookie Japanese player, in a 6-4 loss to the Red Sox

After salvaging a game against the Rays yesterday, the Blue Jays hit the road as they began the trip in Boston. The Blue Jays have won 5 of the first 6 games in the season series, outscoring the Red Sox 24-10. Trey Yesavage got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Davis Schneider was in LF, Daulton Varsho was in CF and Myles Straw was in RF. Could the Blue Jays make it 2 straight wins and start the road trip with a win? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Red Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Anthony Siegler led off with a solo blast to right
  • The Red Sox added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd as Ceddanne Rafaela whacked a 2-run blast over the green monster in left; also scoring Siegler
  • Trey Yesavage pitching line: 4IP 5H 3R (all earned) 1BB 9K 93 pitches (63 for strikes)
  • Patrick Sandoval pitching line: 4.2IP 5H 0R 2BB 3K 84 pitches (51 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox added a run in the bottom of the 6th on a sac fly by  Andruw Monasterio that scored Masataka Yoshida
  • The Blue Jays got 3 back in the top of the 7th as Kazuma Okamoto hammered a 3-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Ernie Clement and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Okamoto has now hit the most HR by a Japanese born rookie
  • The Blue Jays tied it in the top of the 8th on a sac fly by Andres Gimenez that scored Nathan Lukes
  • The Red Sox retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Romy Gonzalez doubled scoring Jarren Duran
  • Two batters later, Siegler doubled home Gonzalez
  • Aroldis Chapman threw a scoreless 9th for his 24th save of the season
  • Final score: Red Sox 6 Blue Jays 4

My Take:

  • Trey Yesavage battled through 4 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 9. He was inefficient today, averaging nearly 25 pitches an inning. He was also taken deep twice to put the Blue Jays in a 3-0 deficit which probably felt like a 30 run deficit the way the offense has been performing. You have to wonder if Yesavage, who missed the first month of the season, is battling through an injury.
  • The bullpen gave up 3 runs on 7 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4 over the last 4 innings. CJ Van Elk took the loss after the Red Sox scored twice on 4 hits in 2/3 of an inning. He could be optiioned tomorrow if the Blue Jays need a fresh arm. Mason Fluharty was the only reliever to retire every batter he faced
  • Kazuma Okamoto is the Blue Jays MVP and unsung hero. Time and time again, he comes up clutch and is the only Blue Jay who has consistentlty hit for power. Tonight, he surpassed Shohei Ohtani for  most HR by a Japanese born player and his 3-run bomb put the Blue Jays within striking distance of their first multi win streak since June 8-11 when they won 3 in a row. Andres Gimenez knocked in the tying run an inning later with a sac fly
  • The other big milestone tonight saw Red Sox closer surpass Dennis Eckersley on the career save list, notching his 391st career save putting him in sole possession of the 9th spot in career saves. Billy Wagner is the next pitcher he'll pass. Wagner finished his career with 422 saves. The legendary Mariano Rivera has the most career saves (652)
  • The Red Sox were 1-2 on ABS challenges and the Blue Jays were 2-2 on ABS challenges
  • The Blue Jays were 2-8 with runners in scoring position. Pretty egregiously bad at bat by Davis Schneider with the bases loaded in the 1st as he struck out looking.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to even the series and avoid their 17th series loss of the season. Dylan Cease starts against Red Sox righty Sonny Gray

Game #104 - Toronto Blue Jays (47-56) @ Boston Red Sox (52-49)

If I was a boat...what kind of boat would I be?

A win...an actual to goodness win.

Can the Jays make it two in a row?

Game # 103 - Tampa Bay Rays (59-42) @ Toronto Blue Jays (46-56)

Two out of three ain't bad...

Ten...ten games under .500

That's bad...but maybe not this bad:

I use ten games above .500 as the mark of a decent team with potential for the long haul...this is not a good team.

We have 60 games left in the season and I think even getting to .500 would be a minor miracle.

However...you never know.

Maybe the anemic offense finally wakes up and the team goes 42-18...do not, I repeat, do not place money on that possibility...just send it to me.

So let's at least win this matinee affair and head off to Boston with some semblance of competency.

2026 In Summary...
