Shane Bieber threw 7 strong innings in a 5-1 win over the Rays 

After dropping yesterday's game due in large part to a disastrous play by Jesus Sanchez and a suboptimal Max Scherzer start. the Blue Jays were looking to escape Tampa Bay with their 17th series win of the season. Shane Bieber got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Daz Cameron was in LF and Myles Straw was in CF. Could the Blue Jays notch their 17th series win of the season? Game Highlights:

• The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the1st as Kazuma Okamoto belted a solo jack to left
• Andres Gimenez left the game prior to the bottom of the 4th with right hamstring tightness
• Same half inning, the Rays tied the game as Junior Caminero singled scoring Chandler Simpson
• The Blue jays retook the lead in the top of the 5th as Nathan Lukes whacked a solo blast to right
• Two batters later, Daz Cameron hammered a solo bomb to left
• Ian Seymour pitching line: 5IP 6H 3R and(all earned) 1BB 8K 90 pitches (66 for strikes)
• The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the top of the 7th as George Springer singled scoring Charles McAdoo and Cameron

• Final score: Blue Jays 5 Rays 1

My Take:

• Shane Bieber fired 7 strong innings, giving up a run on 4 hits while walking none and striking out 7. He retired the first 9 batters he faced and 11 of the last 12. Bieber has really gotten into a rhythm and has looked much more like the pitcher that won the 2020 AL Cy Young after missing the first 2 months of the season with arm issues. If he keeps pitching like this, he's going to command big time money in free agency in the off season
• The bullpen held the Rays to a hit and a walk over the last 2 innings. Not sure if would have used closer Louis Varland in the 9th inning of a non-save situation with the Blue Jays likely to need him in New York.
• The Blue Jays are starting to hit for power with Kazuma Okamoto, Nathan Lukes and Daz Cameron all going deep.  George Springer also knocked in a pair with a clutch base hit. 
• There has to be concern about Andres Gimenez going down with a hamstring injury.  If he needs an IL stint, look for Davis Schneider to be recalled since he can play 2B or LF. 
• The Blue Jays were 2-1 on ABS challenges and the Rays were 3-1 on ABS challenges 
• The Blue Jays were 1-11 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the wild card race, after the win today, the Blue Jays are just a half game back of the Twins for the 3rd WC spotand are tied (for the moment) with the Rangers, who are in a scoreless tie with the Nationals early in their game tonight and would gain a half game on the Blue Jays with a win. The Guardians (won today) are a half game back of the Blue Jays, the Orioles (currently losing to the Yankees) are a game back of the Blue Jays but will fall back a half game if they lose tonight. The Tigers, who were idle today, are also a game back of the Blue Jays (or 1.5 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Mariners are 3 back of the 3rd WC spot and losing to the Brewers, so their playoff hopes are dwindling fast.
• Up next, the Blue Jays head to the Bronx where they will try to keep up with the other teams in the wild card race. The Yankees and Blue Jays split the first 10 games of the season series with the Blue Jays outscoring the Yankees 36-35. It will be a bullpen day tomorrow with Brayden Fisher likely opening and Spencer Arrighetti possibly coming off the IL to make his Blue Jays debut. After a huge win over the Rays yesterday thanks to the offense coming to life, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 17th series win of the season. Righty Matt Waldron was DFA'd and lefty Brendan Cellucci was selected to the MLB roster. Max Scherzer got the start with Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate. Alejandro Kirk got the half day off as DH. Charles McAdoo was at the hot corner, Josh Smith was at 2B and Kazuma Okamoto was at 1B. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 17th series win of the season?  Here is tonight's game recap.

My Take:-

• Max Scherze battled through 4 innings, giving up 7 runs on 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1. He was clearly unhappy with the horrible play by Jesus Sanchez that led to a 5 run inning that ended up being the difference in the game. At the same time, Scherzer needs to be able to limit the damage and he was unable to do that. The Blue Jays could have used another inning or two from the veteran righty.
• The bullpen held the Rays to three hits while walking none and striking out four over the last four innings. Paul Sewald and Mason Fluharty both retired every batter they faced
• The rejuvenated offense tried to rally but fell a run short. Alejandro Kirk (2RBI, including a solo HR), Charles McAdoo (2RBI) and Nathan Lukes and Kazuma Okamoto, who both drove in a run each, led the way
• The Blue Jayd were 1-2 on ABS challenges. The Rays didn't attempt any ABS challenges today.
• The Blue Jays were 3-7 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the wild card race, the Blue Jays are a game back of the Twins, who won today and a half gamew behind the Rangers, who were shut out by the Nationals for the 3rd WC apot. The Guardians, Royals and Tigers all lost and sit a half game back of the Blue Jays for the 3rd and final WC spot

After a much-needed off-day/travel day yesterday, the Blue Jays opened a tough road trip that commenced the house of horrors AKA Tropicana Field. The Rays have dominated the season series, winning 8 of the first 10 games in the season series, outscoring the Blue Jays 54-28. Lenyn Sosa cleared outright assignment waivers and was assigned to AAA-ball. Jose Soriano got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Jesus Sanchez was in LF, Brett Bateman was in CF and Nathan Lukes was in RF. Josh Smith was at the hot corner and Kazuma Okamoto got the start at 1B. Could the Blue Jays start the week and road trip with a win?  Here is today's game recap.

My Take:

• Jose Soriano battled through 5.2 innings, giving uo 3 runs on 9 hits while walking none and striking out 2. He was pitching on an extra day of rest and his command was off a touch. Soriano was good enough to be able to battle out of the jams he got into, other than the 4th inning when he uncorked a wild pitch and gave up a 2-run single. He certainly has the arsenal to be a very good piece in the Blue Jays rotation for years to come
• The bullpen gave up a pair of runs on 4 hits while walking none and striking out none over the last 3.1 innings. Mason Fluharty and Spencer Miles retired every batter they faced. Matt Waldron should have thrown his last pitch as a Blue Jay tonight. This is the second consecutive outing where the Blue Jays had to get a reliever up and throwing and eventually in the ball game. The bullpen is already very overworked. They can ill afford to keep Waldron around if he can't handle pitching in the lowest leverage spot - the last innings of a blowout.
• The offense exploded today with a 10 run 17 hit output led by Alejandro Kirk (3RBI, includiing a 2-run HR; finished a triple shy of the cycle), Josh Smith (2-run HR), Ernie Clement (3 runs scored), George Springer (run scored, RBI), and Brett Bateman (run scored, RBI)
• Every Blue Jays starter had a hit and all but Andres Gimenez either scored a run or drove in a run
• Alejandro Kirk was 0-2 on ABS challenges and the Rays were 1-2 on ABS challenges
• The Blue Jays were 4-14 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the uber tight wild card race, the Blue Jays are effectively tied with the Twins and Rangers for the 3rd wild card spot with the Guardians, Orioles and Tigers a half game back of the Blue Jays, Rangers and Twins. The Mariners aren't out of the race either and are 2 games back. The Rangers are up 5-0 on the Nationals and look like they are well on their way to a win, the Mariners are getting spanked 12-0 by the Brewers, the Tigers and Orioles lost their games while the Guardians and Twins won theirs. This race is almost certainly going to come down to the wire unless one team, like the Blue Jays goes on a big run (very possible given the favorable schedule after this week, but msny of the remaining games will be against the very teams they are battling for the wild card spot) or a big losing streak could take a team out of the race. It's going to be a fun final 5 weeks of the season.

Alejandro Kirk hit a solo HR in a 4-2 come-from behind loss to the Rays

After another blowout loss due to bad pitching, offense and defense, the Blue Jays were looking to snap the 3-game skid and avoid their 17th series loss of the season. Jonatan Clase was placed on the 10 day IL with left plantar fasciitis. Yohendrick Pinago was recalled from AAA-ball (and got the start in LF. Righty Lazaro Estrada was optioned to AAA-ball and righty CJ Van Eyk was recalled from AAA-ball. It was a bullpen day with Brayden Fisher getting the start and Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Kazuma Okamoto got the complete day off with Sean Keys at the hot corner.  Could the Blue Jays snap the 3-game skid and avoid their 17th series loss of the season? Here is tonight's game recap.

My Take:

• Brayden Fisher was the opener in today's bullpen day, necessitated by Patrick Corbin losing his effectiveness as a starting pitcher and Max Scherzer being a rehab start or two away from being ready to return to the rotation. I still don't like the of the opener largely because it wastes a reliever right away. Also, pitchers are very much creatures of habit and preparing for a start once every five days vs. being a reliever who might pitch on back to back days and comes in often with men on base or the score dictating the situation is very different. One hall of fame pitcher who was excellent as both a starter and a  reliever was the great Dennis Eckersley, who won 20 games as a starter in 1978 and saved 51 games in 1992 when he won the Cy Young award. The Blue Jays should see about getting a starting pitcher back at the trade deadline.
• The bullpen gave up a further 3 runs on 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8 over the last 6.2 innings. One huge positive, Brendon Little is looking much more effective since he was recalled a few days ago. Hopefully he keeps building on these positive outings
• Offensively, Alejandro Kirk went deep in the 7th inning and Nathan Lukes scored on a ground out. It has to be alarming to everyone from the front office to manager John Schneider that Vladdy still hasn't gone deep at the Rogers Centre this season.
• Rays catcher Nick Fortes was successful on the Rays only ABS challenges and Alejandro Kirk was 1-1 on ABS challenges

After dropping yesterday's game due to another poor effort from the inept offense, the Blue Jays were looking to start the week with a win against the Rays, who have won 5 of the 6 games played between the two squads so far this season, outscoring the Blue Jays 30-20. Dylan Ceasse got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after the half day off as DH yesterday (George Springer served as DH tonight.) My Take:

• Dylan Cease battled through 6 innings, giving up 5 runs (3 earned ) on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 7. Cease was taken deep twice. You have to wonder if the exra days off effected his effectiveness. Pitchers are very much creatures of habit and the starters are used to pitching every 5 days. Unfortunate timing for a bad start with the Blue Jays needing to string together some wins and fast.
• The bullpen gave up a pair of runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2 over the last 2 innings. Brendon Little looked ok in the 1st inning he pitched but John Schneider tempted fate and let him throw one more - then he ran into trouble, giving up a run on 3 hits while intentionally walking Junior Caminero. 
• The offense was one RBI single off the bat of catcher Alejanddro Kirk. Vlad was 0-8 and his contract is aging badly - only 13 more years...
• There were no ABS challenges today
• The Blue Jays were 1-5 with runners in scoring position

My Take:

• Dylan Cease fired 7 strong innings, giving up a run on 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 9. He's turned into an excellent off-season signing and has been giving the Blue Jays a chance to win every game. He retired the first 10 batters he faced.
• The bullpen gave up a pair of runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3 over the last 3 innings. Jeff Hoffman proved he still can't handle a high leverage situation with the game on the line. He allowed two runs in the 10th inning. Mason Fluharty retired the only batter he faced
• The offense faced the same scenario as last night: down 2 runs in the bottom of the 10th. This time they took full advantage of a pitcher  that is not good and loaded the bases before Daulton Varsho walked it off with a grand slam. Kazuma Okamoto drove in the other Blue Jays run with a sac fly
• Rays catcher Hunter Feduccia was 2-2 on ABS challenges. The Blue Jays catchers Brandon Valenzuela and Tyler Heineman both successully overturned one ABS challenge each
• The Blue Jays were 1-10 with runners in scoring position

My Take:

• Patrick Corbin battled through 4.1 innings, giving up 3 runs on 9 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1. He was working his way in and out of jams all night. He'll be in the rotation for a while after Eric Lauer was DFA'd and with Jose Berrios suffering a setback of some sort and Shane Bieber still a few weeks away (barring any setbacks).\
• The bullpen gave up 4 runs on 4 hits while walking 5 and striking 7 over the last 5.2 innings. None of the relievers retired every batter they faced and Brayden Fisher 
• Offensively, the bats woke up after being stymied by Shane McClanahan with a 5 run rally in the 6th. Yohendrick Pinago, who barely got off the plane after being opioned back to AAA-ball before being recalled again after Addison Barger hurt himself his first game back, drove in 2 runs, Jesus Sanchez each drove in a run and scored a run and George Springer scored twice and drove in a run.

My Take:

• Patrick Corbin fired 5.1 innings, giving up a pair of runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 1. Patrick Corbin continues to consistently give the Blue Jays a chance to win. He pitched his way out of s tough jam in the 1st inning and held the Rays off the scoreboard other than the 4th inning. Given the injury situation with Jose Berrios (who suffered a setback his last rehab start), Max Scherzer (who isn't bouncing back from the forearm strain the way he would like) and Shane Bieber, who might be back in June if no setbacks, Corbin should be in the rotation for a while with the struggling Eric Lauer likely to be the first pitcher to be replaced in the rotation once the injured bodies start coming back. 
• The bullpen gave up an unearned run on a hit and 3 walks while striking out 2 over the last 2.2 innings.  Mason Fluharty retired every batter he faced. 
• The feeble offense continues to putter along. They managed just 5 total baserunners today.  Myles Straw got half the hits (2) on the day. Davis c Schneider, a likely candidate to be optioned once Addison Barger comes back, remains ice cold. I think the team is really missing Don Mattingly.
• Ernie Clement successfully overturned the Blue Jays only ABS challenge and Rays catcher Nick Fortes was 2-1 on ABS challenges

After dropping the finale of the series yesterday due to a late rally falling short and a bad outing from reliever Brayden Fisher, the Blue Jays continued the road trip in Tampa Bay. The Rays won last year's season series 7-6, outscoring the Blue Jays 58-48. Eric Lauer got the start with Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. Daulton Varsho got the half day off as DH with Myles Straw in CF. Could the Blue Jays start the week with a win? Here is tonight's game recap.

My Take:

• Eric Lauer battled through 4 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4. There's no doubt he regrets making the comment about not liking the idea of an opener pitching in front of him. He did himself no favors on that front when he gave up three runs on one swing in the 1st inning to put his team in a 3-0 hole after 1 inning. At this point, he might be asked to be the long man until Shane Bieber returns from injury, but at this point, I'd just release him because he hasn't done enough to demonstrate he can be trusted even in that lower leverage role and the Blue Jays have plenty of lefties in the bullpen at the moment anyway.
• The bullpen gave up a pair of runs, both charged to Spencer Miles, on 6 hits while walking none and striking out 3 over the last 3.2 innings. None of the relievers was able to retire every batter they faced today, but at least most of the high leverage guys, except maybe Mason Fluharty were not used today.
• Offensively, Vlad drove in the only run on the night with a clutch single in the 3rd inning. They have their opportunities with everyone but Daulton Varsho getting at least a hit, but they weren't able to get the hits with runners in scoring position. Overall, their approach at the plate hasn't been as giood as last year, chasing pitches they weren't a year ago\
• The Rays were 0-1 on ABS challenges and Jesus Sanchez successfully overturned the Blue Jays only ABS challenge

After a huge win yesterday thanks to 5 shutout innings from rookie phenom Trey Yesavage who started this season in Dunedin and worked his way through all 4 minor league tiers, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 4 games, complete their 11th series sweep and punch their ticket to the ALDS with a week of much needed rest and recovery. Kevin Gausman got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Myles Straw was in LF and Anthony Santander was in RF. Ernie Clement was at SS and Davis Schneider was at 2B. My Take 

• Kevin Gausman battled through 3.2 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5. He was n decentt shape through 2 innings with 30 odd pitches thrown. Sure he put his team behind early, but he came up with a HUGE 1-2-3 inning. The Rays got to him in the third inning and just drove up the pitch count, knocking him out of the game with the bases loaded and the go-ahead run just a hit away. It was a calculated risk to start him today - best starter on the team but prone to clunkers like today and now he would be unavailable if the Blue Jays lose and the Yankees lose. 
• The bullpen was superb, firing 5.1 shutout innings, giving up a hit and 2 walks while striking out 9. Mason Fluharty, Brayden Fisher and Eric Lauer all retired every batter they faced. Brandon Little came in and struck out the side. 
• It was a team effort offensively. Alejandro Kirk hit a HUGE grand slam to put the Blue Jays up by 4 runs after the 1st inning and came through again in the 5th with a 2-run blast to restore the 4-run cushion. George Springer capped off his tremendous comeback season with a 2-run jack to cap off the scoring. Vlad drew the Blue Jays even with a huge RBI single (he had other chances to convert and failed. The Blue Jays will need his big bat to be on fire in a week). Addison Barger belted a 2-run jack and Myles Straw tripled home a run. Up and down the lineup, the bats came through. The Blue Jays had control of their destiny and they took full advantage of it.
• The Blue Jays were 5-14 with runners in scoring positon
• The Blue Jays didn't need the Orioles help and they weren't getting it either. The Yankees won on the final day.
• The comeback kids did it again! The Blue Jays end the year with an impressive 49 comeback wins, one shy of the franchise record of 50 set by the juggernaut 1987 team
• The Blue Jays finish with a record of 94-68. The world series winning 1992 and 1993 teams finshed 96-66 and 95-67 respectively
• Up next, a well deserved week off as they await the winner of the wild card series between the Yankees and Red Sox. The Blue Jays won the season series 8-5 aganst the Red Sox, but the Red Sox outscored the Blue Jays 56-53. The Blue Jays also won the season series against the Yankees 8-5, outscoring the Yankees 70-59. The Blue Jays will have full options to start game 1. Look for Shane Bieber or Kevin Gausman to get the assignment. Here's hoping Chris Bassitt is good to go as well.

After a huge win over the Rays thanks to a clutch 2-run home run from Nathan Lukes,  the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 3 games and notch their 27th series win of the season. My Take:

• Trey Yesavage fired 5 shutout innings,  scattering 5 hits,  walking 2 and striking out 5. The rookie phenom continues an outstanding season that started in Vancouver and progressed through all 4 tiers of the minor league system. Heck if either Jose Berrios or Chris Bassitt aren't able to go, I'd throw him on the playoff roster.
• The bullpen was mostly solid giving up a run on 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out 7 over the last 4 innings. Justin Bruihl was excellent in his one inning, striking out 2 batters. 
• Offensively, Ernie Clement and Andres Gimenez had clutch hits to give the Blue Jays an early 3-0 advantage. A struggling Alejandro Kirk anihilated a bomb to the second deck in left to put the game out of reach. It would be nice if Vlad could get his ice cold bat going tomorrow. He needs a week off since something is obviously ailing him and impacting his swing
• The Blue Jays were 3-6 with runners in scoring position
• The Yankees also won earlier today, setting up a winner takes all final Sunday. Quite simply, the Blue Jays win and they get a bye to the ALDS and home field advantage through the ALCS, regardless of what the Yankees do tomorrow. It's great that baseball starts every game at the same time on the final day so no team gets an advantage scoreboard watching

After a huge win on the strength of a 6-run 6th inning thanks to a grand slam off the bat of Daulton Varsho and a 2-run dinger by George Springer, the Blue Jays were looking to make it two straight wins as they opened the final series of the regular season against the Rays, who have won 7 of the first 10 meetings of the season series, outscoring the Blue Jays 51-26. Alek Manoah was claimed off waivers by the Braves. Lefty Justin Bruihl was recalled from AAA-ball and righty Paxton Schultz was optioned to AAA-ball. Shane Bieber got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. The rest of the lineup was the same as yesterday's huge win over the Bosox. Could the Blue Jays make it 2 straight wins? My Take:

• Shane Bieber fired 5 innings, giving up a pair of runs on 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3. 2 mistake pitches that went over the wall in right was the damage against him today. Bieber retired 6 in a row at one point. He should be getting a start in the playoffs, hopefully in the divisional round, which would give him a full week off.
• The bullpen threw 4 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and walking 3. Mason Fluharty was excellent, firing 2 perfect innings and striking out 4. It will be defibrilator time for Blue Jays fans when Jeff Hoffman comes in to close out a game in the playoffs. He barely escaped a jam caused by him walking 2 batters. His pitches were not close on his 11 balls. The Blue Jays may want to look at a different closer next year. If he had converted even half of his 7 blown saves, this win would have clinched the AL East title.
• Offensively, Nathan Lukes led the way, driving in 3-runs, including a 2-run blast in the 5th that turned out to be the difference in the game. Ernie Clement drove in the other Blue Jays run. Vlad has to start picking it up offensively. He hit into a rally-killing DP in the 2nd inning and popped out to end the inning in the 7th.
• The Blue Jays were 2-5 with runners in scoring position
• This was the 48th comeback win of the year, 2 comeback wins behind the juggernaut 1987 squad that had 50 comeback wins
• The Yankees also won today which means the Blue Jays could clinch the AL East tomorrow if they win their matinee against the Rays and the Yankees lose a few hours later to the Orioles. At worst, the Blue Jays would host a wild card series likely against the Red Sox

My Take:

• Chris Bassitt battled through 4.1 innings, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3. While he will likely be in the playoff rotation, there has to be concern about his struggles in getting through innings efficiently. He was already at 50 pitches in the 2nd inning. He'll be facing better lineups in the playoffs that'll make him pay for bad pitches.
• The bullpen gave up a run on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3 over the last 3.2 innings. Brayden Fisher retired every batter he faced.
• Not much to say about the offence who failed to get a runner into scoring position until the 8th inning and managed a measley 3 base runners against Rays starter Shane Baz.
• The Blue Jays were 0-3 with runners in scoring position
• The Red Sox are pretty much out of the race of 1st in the AL East - they are 6 games back of the Blue Jays for 1st in the AL East. The Yankees, who play later tonight, can get within 3 games of 1st in the AL East.

• The Rays got three back on a very controversial 3-run blast to right-center by Brandon Lowe that scored Chandler Simpson and Yandy Diaz. A fan clearly reached over the bleachers and took a catch away from Nathan Lukes. The explanation by the umpire that it would have been a home run anyway is ludicrous since Lukes looked like he was about to make a play he has made time and time again. As soon as a fan reaches over and touches the ball, the play should be dead and there is no way a home run should be awarded on the play.
• The Blue Jays appeared to get a make up call in the top of the 4th when Lukes was awarded a solo home run on a ball ht to a similar location. This time, the umpires overturned the original call
• The Blue Jays added a run in the top of  the 5th as Joey Loperfido belted a solo jack to right - a no-doubter this time
• Jose Berrios pitching line: 4IP 4H 3R (all earned) 2BB 0K 78pitches (46 for strikes)
• The Rays got one back in the bottom of the 8th as Tristan Gray singled scoring Josh Lowe

My Take:

• Jose Berrios battled through 4 inningsm giving up 3 runs, albeit on a very controversial home run that should have been ruled fan intereference, on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out none. Controversial home run aside, Berrios is picking an awful time to slump. He has been very hittable lately and very inefficient. He was at 61 pitches with outs still to get in the 3rd inning. At this point, he looks like he will be the odd starter out of the playoff rotation and there may not even be a role for him in the bullpen either.
• Speaking of the bullpen, it gave up 2 runs on 6 hits while walking 4 and striking out 8 over the last 5 innings. If there is any facet of the team that will lead to a quick exit, it will be the bullpen, which has been leaking runs at the wrong time of the year. There has to be big concerns about the health of closer Jeff Hoffman, whose velocity has dipped and he has been getting hit hard. He managed to save today's game, but not before giving up a walk and a hit to put the game-tying run in scoring position.
• Offensively, the bats came alive early with George Springer, Vlad and Addison Barger knocking in runs to put the Blue Jays up by 4. Nathan Lukes got a little vengeance in the 4th inning with a call overturned into a home run after being robbed of an obvious fan intereference call that was definitely not going to be a home run anyway and very likely would have been caught by Lukes. Joey Loperfido also went deep.
• What is the point of having instant replay if the umpires are going to make up some excuse to keep a home run call? It's shameful and quite frankly the umpires should be held accontable when they blow a call that could impact the outcome of a game. Don't even get me started on the strike and ball calls that the umpires frequently screw up. This is why by next year, games will be called by robo umps.
• The Blue Jays were 3-10 with runners in scoring position
• Standings wise, the Blue Jays are now three games better than the Tigers for the best record in the AL and home field advantage through the ALCS. The Yankees remain 5 games back of the Blue Jays fot 1st in the AL East.

My Take:

• Trey Yesavage fired 5 solid innings in his big league debut, giving up a run on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 9. It's remarkable the season he is having, rocketing through 3 minor league tiers. It's common for pitches to be promoted a tier or two if they are having a good season, but to advance 4 tiers in one season is in rare territory, 20ish pitchers all time. Examples of players who have done the feat include Chris Sale (2010, White Sox), Brandon Finnegan (2014, Royals), Andrew Miller (2006, Tigers), and Ryan Wagner (2003, Reds). Yesavage set a franchise record for most strikeouts in a big league debut.
• The bullpen was solid in a playoff-like game, throwing 6 scoreless innings, conceding a hit and 2 walks while striking out 9. Brandon Little and Seranthony Dominguez retired every batter they faced. Braydon Fisher, who was credited with the win, was phenomeol, striking out 4, including 3 in the 11th with runners on the corners with none out. 
• Offensively, Ernie Clement scored twice with Andres Gimenez and George Springer driving him in
• The magical season continues as the Blue Jays notched their 47th comeback win of the season, leaving them just 3 wins shy of the franchise record of 50 comeback wins set by the 1987 squad.. It must be a good feeling for the pitchers knowing they don't have to be perfect, there is a good chance of a comeback as long as they keep the score close.
• The Blue Jays were 1-7 with runners in scoring position
• The Blue Jays gained a game against the Yankees, who were shutout by the Twins tonight, putting the Yankees a full 5 games back of 1st in the AL East and the Red Sox are a full 6 games back and are likely not winning the AL East division. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. got a hit and drew a walk in a 13-0 shutout loss to the Rays

After a second straight 3-1 loss due to the inept offense, the Blue Jays were trying to snap the 2-game skid and avoid being swept for the 2nd time this season. Tyler Heineman was placed on the 7-day concussion list after several blows off his mask his last start behind the plate against the Padres. Ali Sanchez was recalled from AAA-ball and got the start behind the plate with Chris Bassitt pitching. Lefty Josh Walker was DFA'd. George Springer was back in RF after a half day off as DH yesterday (Anthony Santander served as DH today). Jonatan Clase was in LF and Myles Straw was in CF. Could the Blue Jays snap the 2-game skid and avoid being swept for the 2nd time this season? Here is today's game recap.

My Take:

• Chris Bassitt battled through 4 innings, giving up 5 runs on 9 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2. Before he fateful 5th inning, he had barely sat down in the dugout and was forced to go right back out since the Blue Jays batters were swing happy and went down in order on jusr 4 pitches. It was clear early that the heat was effecting Bassitt's effectiveness. This blowout is not on him
• The bullpen was even worse. Mason Fluharty allowed 4 runs on 3 hits and a walk and didn't record an out. Paxson Schutltz also gave up 4 runs, but all 4 were unearned. The best pitcher on the day was a poaition player, infielder Michael Stefanic. He retired every batter he faced on just 7 pitches
• The offence mustered just 4 hits and drew a walk. The most egregious inning was the top of the 4th where they basically swung at the first pitch and barely let Chris Bassitt sit down after a grueling 25 pitch inning for him. Vlad was the only Blue Jay to reach base multiple times. It is high time to give Anthony Santander at least a 10-day  IL stint to reset himself and heal the nagging hip and shoulder injuries. Santander struck out 3 times.
• It was so bad today offensively, that the Blue Jays didn't even get a runner into scoring position.
• Fun fact, Stefanic was the 1st Blue Jays pitcher to get a hit since Trent Thornton got a pair of hits May 14, 2019 against the Giants

Street a solid win last night thanks to an Alejandro Kirk 3-run HR and some solid pitching,  the Blue Jays were looking to make it two straight wins and notch their 5th series win of the season. Kevin Gausman got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. George Springer got the half day off as DH with Anthony Santander in RF. My Take:

• Kevin Gausnan was lit up for 6 runs on 10 hits while walking none and striking out 6 over 5.2 innings. The Rays went deep off him 4 times and scored in 5 of 6 innings. Could he have been pulled earlier when it was clear he didn't have it? Perhaps but the bullpen has been so overworked the Blue Jays needed him to get as many outs as he could.
• The bullpen gave up a further 2 runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4. Jose Urena was responsible for both runs. Braydon Fisher had the best night of any of the Blue Jays pitchers, throwing 2 perfect innings, striking out 4.
• Offensively, the Blue Jays got solo home runs from Vlad, Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger. Bo Bichette did what a leadoff hitter is supposed to do - get on base (he was 3/4)
• The Blue Jays were 0-4 with runners in scoring position
• Up next, the Blue Jays welcome the Tigers to town. The Tigers won the season series last year

Alejandro Kirk hit a 3-run HR to lift the Blue Jays to a 3-1 win over the Rays

After a heartbreaking loss yesterday due to the bullpen blowing the save and a 9th inning rally falling short,  the Blue Jays were looking to even the series. Chris Bassitt got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Jonatan Clase got the start in LF.  The rest of the lineup was the same as yesterday's loss.  Could the Blue Jays even the series? My Take:

• Chris Bassitt battled through 5.1 innings, giving up a run on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6. He worked his way in and out of jams all night but kept the Rays off the scoreboard except for the 4th inning. He was also pretty efficient with his pitches, needing 96 pitches to get through 5.2 innings.
• The bullpen threw 3.1 perfect innings, striking out 3. It must have been satisfying for Yimi Garcia to get old battery mate Danny Jansen to ground out to end the game\
• Offensively, Alejandro Kirk went deep for 3 runs in the 6th and that was about it.
• The Blue Jays were 1-6 with runners in scoring position

After an off-day/travel day yesterday, the Blue Jays opened a 9-game, 3-team home stand against the Rays, who took the season series 9-4 last year, outscoring the Blue Jays 56-45. The Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to a season high 5 games and put their record above .500 for the 1st time since April 21 (last season they slipped below .500 for good April 24) Ace Jose Berrios got the start with Tyler Heineman  behind the plate. Anthony Santander got the half day off as DH with Nathan Lukes in LF and George Springer in RF. Daulton Varsho was back in CF. My Take:

• Jose Berrios had a rougb 3rd inning, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits and a hit by pitch on ex-Jays catcher Danny Jansen, who's been a magnet getting hit by pitches in his career.. He also walked a pair in the 1st inning. Berrios did settle down and retire 7 straight after giving up the 4-spit in the fateful 3rd inning. The Blue Jays ace can be hot and cold, depending on the start.
• The bullpen gave up a further 6 runs - 4 of which were the result of a grand slam given up by closer Jeff Hoffman, who has been struggling lately and his ERA is creeping up (6.05 after tonight's disaster), - on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3 over the last 3.2 innings. Chad Green and Braydon Fisher both retired every batter they faced
• Daulton Varsho went deep twice, including a mammoth 3-run bomb off the basing of the 5th deck that gave the Blue Jays a brief lead. Bo Bichette has had a hot stick lately. He also went deep for 2 runs and drove in another to start a failed rally in the 9th inning.
• Everyone but Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger reached base at least once and all but Lukes, Barger andAnthony Santander had a hit
• This season is very much shaping up to be similar to last season, where the Blue Jays were unable to get above .500 after April 24. The Blue Jays have been at or below .500 since April 21.
• The Blue Jays were 4-10 with runners in scoring position.

My Take:

• Ryan Burr gave the Blue Jays 4 outs, allowing a hit, walking none and striking out 3. The Blue Jays have to get another starter - bullpen days every 5-6 days isn't ideal. At this time, the Blue Jays don't have enough pitchers built up to handle pitching more than 1 or 2 innings
• The bullpen gave up 4 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 9 over 7.2 innings. Every reliever gave up at least one hit and had a run charged against them. The two lefties might be on next year's team.
• Offensively, the Blue Jays took the lead on a sac fly and answered runs by the Rays in the 7th and 9th inning. Sadly, the 9th inning rally fell short. Ernie Clement scored a run and drove in a run. Vlad knocked in his 100th run of the season. The team also had a failed suicide squeeze in the 7th with Tyler Heineman a dead duck at home
• The Blue Jays were 3-12 with runners in scoring position
• Up next, the Blue Jays return home to wrap up the final week of the season as they open a series against ex-Blue Jay catcher Danny Jansen and the Red Sox.
