Game #50 Toronto Blue Jays (25-23) @ Cleveland Indians (27-22) - game recap
Joe Panik was 4-4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI in an 11-2 rout over the Indians
After splitting the double header yesterday, which included a 1st career win for prospect Alek Manoah. Today, the Blue Jays opened a weekend series against the Indians. In 2019, the Indians won 6/7 meetings in the season series, outscoring the Blue Jays 29-11. The Blue Jays sent ace Hyun-Jin-Ryu to the mound. The Indians countered with righty Eli Morgan, who was making his MLB debut tonight. Bo Bichette got the half dsay off, serving as the DH with Joe Panik at 2B. Espinal Santiago was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays win the opener of this series? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Indians opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Eddie Rosario singled scoring Cesar Hernandez and Jose Ramirez
- The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 2nd on a ground out by Santiago Espinal that scored Randal Grichuk
- A batter later, Danny Jansen doubled home Joe Panik
- The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 3rd as Grichuk doubled home Bo Bichette
- A batter later, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled scoring Grichuk
- A batter later, Panik bashed a 2-run blast to right; also scoring Gurriel Jr.
- Eli Morgan pitching line: 2.2IP 8H 6R (all earned) 2BB 1K 65 pitches (35 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the top of the 5th as Gurriel Jr. doubled home Grichuk and Teoscar Hernandez
- A batter later, Panik singled home Gurriel Jr.
- Hyun-Jin Ryu pitching line: 5IP 4H 2R (both earned) 2BB 6K 91 pitches (58 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays added 2 more runs as Espinal doubled home Vladimir Guerrero Jr, and Gurriel Jr.]
- Final score: Blue Jays 11 Indians 2 (6.5 innings)
My Take:
- Not the best outing for Hyun-Jin Ryu who gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and a pair of walks in the 1st inning alone. He did settle down after that, allowing just one more hit over the next 4 innings. Weather definitely could have been a factor with cold weather and rainy conditions.
- Weather was definitely a factor, and led to the game ending after sic and a half innings. Rain was falling the whole game, it was very foggy out too, making visibility difficult.
- Joe Panik, Randal Grichuk, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. combined to go 9-13 with 8 runs scored and 9 RBI to drive the offense on this day
- Every Blue Jays starter except Bo Bichette had at least 1 hit and Bichette drew a walk
- The Blue Jays were 9-18 with runners in scoring position.
- Up next, the Blue Jays go for the series win, assuming the weather clears in time. Ross Stripling gets the start against Indians lefty Sam Hentges

Games #48 and 49 Toronto Blue Jays (25-24) @ NY Yankees (29-21) - game recap (record will reflect what it was after the second game)
Alek Manoah threw six shutout innings for his first MLB win in a 2-0 victory over the Yankess, who prevailed in the second game of the double header 5-3 over the Blue Jays
After a rainout yesterday, the much anticipated debut of #5 prospect Alek Manoah, who began his pro career in Vancouver after being drafted 11th overall by the Blue Jays in the 2019 MLB Draft. Travis Bergman was placed on the 10-day IL with a left shoulder impingement. Tommy Milone was transfereed to the 60-day IL. Reese McGuire started behind the plate in the first game, Danny Jansen was behind the plate in the second game. Vlad DH'd in the 1st game and was in the field the 2nd game. Randal Grichuk was in CF the 1st game and DH'd the 2nd game. Rowdy Tellez was at 1B the 1st game. Jonathan Davis was in CF the 2nd game. Joe Panik was at the hot corner in the 1st game and Santiago Espinal was at the hot corner the 2nd game. Could the Blue Jays sweep the Yankees? Here are today's game recaps.
Game Highlights (1st game):
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd as Marcus Semien whacked a solo blast to left
- A batter later, Bo Bichette smacked a solo blast to left
- Domingo German pitching line: 5.2IP 3H 2R (both earned) 2BB 5K 99 pitches (58 for strikes)
- Alek Manoah pitching line: 6IP 2H 0R 2BB 7K 88 pitches (60 for strikes)
- Jordan Romano pitched a perfect 7th for his 2nd save of the season
- Final score: Blue Jays 2 Yankees 0
My Take (1st game):
- What an excellent MLB debut for Alek Manoah. He fired 6 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7. He walked the 1st batter he faced on four pitches then struck out Aaron Judge and Rougned Odor. At one point he retired 8 in a row.
- Offensively, 2 solo HR were enough to win this game.
- The Blue Jays had just four base runners the whole game. They were 0-1 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, game 2 of this double header. Robbie Ray pitches against Yankees lefty Jordan Montgomery
Game Highlights (2nd game):
- The Yankees took the lead in the bottom of the 1st as Gio Urshela doubled scoring DJ LeMahieu. Aaron Judge was thrown out at home on the play
- The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 3rd as Bo Bichette smacked a 3-run blast to left-center; also scoring Marcus Semien and Danny Jansen
- The Yankees tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Judge hammered a 2-run bomb to dead center; also scoring LeMahieu
- The Yankees took the lead in the bottom of the 4th as Gary Sanchez anihilated a solo bomb to dead center
- Jordan Montgomery pitching line: 4.2IP 5H 3R (all earned) 2BB 1K 73 pitches (44 for strikes)
- The Yankees added a run in the bottom of the 5th on a sac fly by Judge that scored Tyler Wade
- Robbie Ray pitching line: 5H 5R (4 earned) 2BB 5K 80 pitches (47 for strikes)
- Chad Green pitched a scoreless 7th for his 2nd save of the season
- Final score: Yankees 5 Blue Jays 3
- It was a rocky start for Robbie Ray, who gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5. He pitched in and out of trouble all night, although he did retire 5 in a row at one point. Definitely one of those nights where he was trying to figure out which pitches were working.
- After providing the insurance run in game 1, Bo Bichette briefly gave the Blue Jays the lead with a 3-run blast in the 3rd inning. Unfortunately Aaron Judge crushed a 2-run bomb in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game
- Every Blue Jays starter had one hit, except Danny Jansen, who drew a walk
- The Blue Jays were 1-3 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, the Blue Jays head to Cleveland. Weather could be a factor with rain in the forecast Friday and Saturday. Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the start Friday against Indians righty Eli Morgan, who will be making his MLB debut

Game #47 Toronto Blue Jays (24-23) @ NY Yankees (28-20) - game recap
Vlafimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 16th HR of the season in a 6-2 win over the Yankees
After a rough homestand that saw the Blue Jays lose 6 straight and 7 of 10, the Blue Jays hit the road opening a series against the Yankees.. The Blue Jays have won 4 of 6 against the Yankees so far. Bad news on the injury front. David Phelps will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing lat surgery. Steven Matz got the start. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after the day off yesterday. Joe Panik was at the hot corner today. Randal Grichuk was back in the field at CF. Rowdy Tellez was the DH. Could the Blue Jays snap the 6 game losing streak? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 3rd as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. whacked a 2-run screamer to right-center; also scoring Bo Bichette
- Corey Kluber pitching line: 3IP 2H 2R (both earned) 2BB 5K 58 pitches (31 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 4th as Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hammered a solo bomb to dead center
- The Blue Jays added 2 more runs in the top of the 7th on a fielder's choice hit by Santiago Espinal and an ensuing throwing error by Yankees SS Gleyber Torres that scored Randal Grichuk and Rowdy Tellez
- The Yankees got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Kyle Higashioka singled home Clint Frazier
- Steven Matz pitching line: 6.2IP 6H 1R (earned) 0BB 10K 112 pitches (70 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 9th as Grichuk hammered a solo bomb to dead center
- The Yankeees got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Higashioka doubled home Rougned Odor
- Final score: Blue Jays 6 Yankees 2
- Steven Matz was excellent tonight, allowing a run on 6 hits while walking none and striking out 10. Matz threw a season-high 112 pitches, a great sign with his injury history. He struck out the side to start the game and struck out 5 of the first 6 batters he faced. Nine of the ten strikeouts were swings and misses; one was off a foul tip. With the bullpen struggling, the Blue Jays needed a strong start from Matz
- The bullpen was solid, givnig up an unearned run, one hit and walking three batters while striking out 3.
- Offensively, the bats were on fire tonight with three home runs and some solid base-running to force a throwing error. Vlad took over the MLB lead in HR with his 16th dinger
- Every starter had at least one hit except Joe Panik. Marcus Semien, Vlad, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Bo Bichette and Randal Grichuk all had multi-hit days
- Up next, the Blue Jays go for the series win. Weather could be a factor with scattered thunderstorms in the forecast. Assuming the game goes ahead, the pitching matchup will feature the MLB debut of Blue Jays #5 prospect Alex Manoah. Yours truly got to watch him pitch when he was in Vancouver. The Yankees will counter with righty Domingo German.

Game #46 Tampa Bay Rays (30-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-23) - game recap
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a pair of HR in a losing effort as the Rays routed the Blue Jays 14-8 in 11 innings
The Blue Jays wrapped up the final homestand in Dunedin. Next home stand they'll be i Buffalo either for the duration of the season or until they get permission to play in Buffaloo. They were looking to snap a season-high 5 game losing streak and also snap Tampa Bay's season-long 10-game winning streak. The bullpen has had a rough go of it lately with 2 blown saves and giving up late runs in a tied ball game. Witth that in mind, the Blue Jays made a switch today. Initially, Ross Stripling was slated to start today's matinee. However, he's had rough starts to games and spotted the Red Sox last start and the Blue Jays were unable to come back. Trent Thornton served as an opener in what became a bullpen day. Reese McGuire got the start behind the plate. Randal Grichuk got the half day off, serving as DH with Toeoscar Hernandez in RF, Jonathan Davis in CF and Lourdes Gurriel in his customary LF position. Could the Blue Jays snap the five game skid? Here is today's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Rays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st on a bases loaded walk to Taylor Walls that scored Arozarena
- A batter later, Joey Wendle hammered a grand slam to left; also scoring Ji-Man Choi, Walls and Manuel Margot
- Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker was tossed out of the game for arguing balls and strikee
- Trent Thornton pitching line: 1IP 2H 5R (none earned) 2BB 2K 32 pitches (19 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 2nd as Lourdes Gurriel Jr. smacked a solo blast to left
- The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 4th as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. anihiliated a solo bomb to dead center
- A batter later, Teoscar Hernandez whacked a solo blast to left
- Ryan Yarborough pitching line: 6IP 3H 3R (all earned) 0BB 4K 86 pitches (59 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom of the 8th as Guerrero Jr. whacked a 2-run blast to left; also scoring Rowdy Tellez
- The Rays took the lead in the top of the 10th as Austin Meadows doubled home Brett Phillips.
- Two batters later, Margot singled scoring Arozarena
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a 2-run blast to left by Marcus Semien that also scored Jonathan Davis
- The Rays retook the lead in the top of the 11th as Francisco Meija singled scoring Mike Brosseau and Walls
- Two batters later, Arozarena doubled home Wendle
- A batter later, Meija scored on a groundout by Meadows
- Two batters later, Margot tripled scoring Arozarena and Brandon Lowe
- A batter later, Brosseau singled home Margot
- The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Hernandez scored on a ground out by Santiago Espinal
- Final score: Rays 14 Blue Jays 8
My Take:
- The Blue Jays opted for a last minute switch to Trent Thornton as the "opener" as opposed to a traditional start for Ross Stripling as the latter was hit hard early in his recent start. The move backfired big time. Thornton gave up five runs on 2 hits (capped off by a grand slam), a pair of walks and an Espinal Santiago fielding error. None of the runs were earned thanks to the fielding error. Nonetheless, Thornton threw more balls than strikes.
- It was another rough day for the bullpen, which gave up 9 runs (7 earned) on 8 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4 over 2 innings. Ross Stripling actually was the best of the bunch, firing 7 shutout innings, giving up 2 hits and walking 2 and striking out 7. Jordan Romano followed up by striking out the side in the 9th. This is purely the result of overuse. The Blue Jays, due to injuries to the rotation, were forced to have multiple bullpen days due to lack of pitchers available that could pitch more than an inning or two
- Offensively, through 6 innings, the offense was literally three solo home runs. The Blue Jays got to the Rays bullpen a bit and credit to them for coming back twice. Sadly they could not overcome a seven run deficit. Not many teams could
- Up next, the Blue Jays hit the road for a three game set starting tomorrow at Yankee Stadium. The Blue Jays have won four of six games vs. the Yankees so far this season. Steven Matz starts against Corey Kluber, who threw a no-hitter in his last start.

Game #45 Tampa Bay Rays (29-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-22) - game recap
Teoscar Hernandez was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI in a losing effort as the Rays came from behind to defeat the Blue Jays 6-4
The Blue Jays and Rays continued their four game set with a matinee today. Ace Hyun-Jin Ryu got the start. Same lineup as yesterday, except Vlad was back in the foeld, Lourdes was back in his usual LF, Teoscar Hernandez was given the hald day off as DH with Grich in RF and Jonathan Davis in CF. Could the Blue Jays snap the 4-game losing streak? Here is today's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Rays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Manuel Margot singled scoring Randy Arozarena
- Michael Wacha pitching line: 2IP 1H 0R 0BB 1K 24 pitches (14 for strikes)
- Bo Bichette made an outstanding defensive play, throwing out Mike Brosseau, who was trying to score from 1st base to end the 4th inning
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom of the 4th as Teoscar Hernandez belted a solo bomb to left-center
- The Rays retook the lead in the top of the 5th as Francisco Mejia hammered a solo bommb to left-center
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Hernandez singled home Bo Bichette
- Hyun-Jin Ryu pitching line: 6.2IP 8H 2R (both earned) 1BB 7K 107 pitches (74 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays took the lead in the bottom of the 8th as Randal Grichuk hammered a 2-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Hernandez
- The Rays got one back in the top of the 9th as Brett Phillips singled home Ji-Man Choi
- Three batters later, a bases loaded walk to Austin Meadows forced in Taylor Walls
- A batter later, a bases loaded walk to Manuel Margot forced in Phillips
- A batter later, a bases loaded walk to Mike Brosseau forced in Yandy Diaz
- JP Feyereisen pitched a scoreless 9th for his 1st save of the season
- Final score: Rays 6 Blue Jays 4
- Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched a strong game, giving up a pair of runs on 8 hits while walking one and striking out 7. He was able to make the pitches he needed to and escape the jams he got into
- Another blown save for the bullpen. Rafael Dolis blew the save Thursday vs. Boston. The last 2 games, the bullpen gave up late runs in a tie ball game and the Blue Jays were unable to come back. Tonight, Tyler Chatwood gave up 4 runs on 2 hits and walked 2. Travis Bergen then proceeeded to walk three straight batters. All 4 runs were charged to Chatwood, but Bergen was directly responsible for three of four. This is a product of overusing the bullpen.
- Batters 1-6 had at least 1 hit. Batters 7-9 were hitless. Offense was basically Teo. He was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI
- The Blue Jays were 1-4 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, the Blue Jays wrap up the home stand and play their final game in Dunedin until spring training 2022. They'll play their next home stand in Buffalo. They'll be looking to snap the 5 game losing streak. Lefty Ryan Yarborough starts against Blue Jays righty Ross Stripling

Game #44 Tampa Bay Rays (28-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-21) - game recap
The Jays and Rays continued their 4-game Victoria Day long weekend series. There was good news and bad news on theMy injury front. The bad news was Cavan Biggio was placed on the 10-day IL with a cervical spine ligament sprain. The good news was Anthony Castro and Joe Panik were activated off the IL. Jeremy Beasley and Anthony Kay were optioned to the alternate squad. Ty Tice was recalled from Buffalo. Robbie Ray got the start on the mound. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was at 1B as he returns after missing a couple of days with a knee injury. Danny Jansen was behind the plate after a day off last night. Could the Blue Jays end the 3-game losing streak? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Teoscar Hernandez doubled home Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- The Rays tied the game in the top of the 5th as Mike Zunino whacked a solo blast to left-center
- Shane McClanahan pitching line: 5IP 4H 1R (earned) 2BB 4K 67 pitches (41 for strikes)
- Robbie Ray pitching line: 7IP 5H 1R (earned) 0BB 7K 109 pitches (72 for strikes)
- The Rays took the lead in the top of the 8th as Manuel Margot singled scoring Randy Arozarena
- The Rays added a run in the top of the 9th on a wild pitch by Trent Thornton that scored Taylor Walls
- Diego Castillo pitched a scoreless 9th for his 8th save of the seaon
- Final score: Rays 3 Blue Jays 1
- Robbie Ray was excellent tonight, giving up a run on 5 hits while walking none and striking out 7. Right from the first pitch he was in command. He's really blossomed under the guidance of Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Waker
- Not much doing offensively tonight for the Blue Jays, who had rallies thwarted three times by double plays
- The Blue Jays were 0-4 with runners in scoring position
- Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was the only Blue Jay to have more than one hit (he had two hits)
- Up next, the Blue Jays look to snap the 4-game losing streak. Ace Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the start
Game #43 Tampa Bay Rays (27-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-20) - game recap
Vladimir Guerrero Jr, went 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI in a losing effort as the Rays came from behind to defeat the Blue Jays 9-7 in 12 innings
After a brutal blown save loss to the Red Sox last night, the Blue Jays were looking to get right back on track as they opened a four-game series against the Rays. It will be the final series in Dunedin. After a week long road trip in New York and Cleveland, the Blue Jays will play out of Buffalo until either they get permission to play in Toronto (unlikely with the border still closed and COVID still raging in Ontario, not to mention vaccination rollout is generally going slow in Canada. Tonight was a bullpen night for the Blue Jays. Anthony Kay got the start. Reese McGuirewas behind the plat. Vlad got the half day off, serving as the DH with Rowdy Tellez at 1B. Bo Bichette was back in the field after DH'ing last night. Marcus Semien was at 2B. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was given the complete day off with Teoscar Hernandez in LF, Randal Grichuk in RF and Jonathan Davis in CF. Could the Blue Jays snap the 2-game losing streak? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Marcus Semien
- A batter later, Teoscar Hernandez singled home Bo Bichette
- The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 2nd as Semien tripled scoring Jonathan Davis
- The Rays got a pair back in the top of the 3rd as Brandon Lowe smacked a 2-run blast to right; also scoring Yandy Diaz
- The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom half of the inning as Guerrero Jr. belted a solo bomb to dead center
- Anthony Kay pitching line: 4IP 4H 2R (both earned) 4BB 4K 91 pitches (54 for strikes)
- The Rays got one back in the top of the 5th as Lowe cracked a solo blast to right
- The Blue Jays added run in the bottom half of the inning as Semien whacked a solo blast to left
- Tyler Glasnow pitching line: 4.2IP 9H 5R (all earned) 1BB 2K 93 pitches (61 for strikes)
- The Rays tied the game in the top of the 6th as Ji-Man Choi crushed a 2-run bomb to right; also scoring Joey Wendle
- The Rays took the lead in the top of the 12th as Francisco Mejia hammered a grand slam to right; also scoring Brett Phillips, Lowe and Wendle
- The Blue Jays got a pair back in the bottom half of the inning as Guerrero Jr. smashed a 2-run bomb to right-center; also scoring Semien
- Final score: Rays 9 Blue Jays 7
My Take:
- Anthony Kay threw the first four innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while walking 4 and striking out 2. He threw a ton of pitches and didn't help himself walking 4 batters. If one had to choose between Kay and Ross Stripling for a spot in the rotation, it would be a tough call right now
- After the two teams traded five runs each through 6 innings, neither team could break the stalemate for the next 5 innings. The Blue Jays blew chances to win it. OK, I'll admit it was a terrible idea to bunt with 2 strikes, but the intention was there to move the runner 90 feet
- Marcus Semien was a single short of the cycle
- The Blue Jays were 4-15 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, the Blue Jays try to snap the 3-game winning streak. Robbie Ray gets the start against Rays lefty Shane McClanahan

Game #42 Boston Red Sox (27-18) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-19) - game recap
The Blue Jays and Red Sox wrapped up a crucial three-game set with first place in the AL East on the line. The Red Sox will remain in 1st place no matter what after winning last night. Steven Matz took the mound for the Blue Jays. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after a day off. Jonathan Davis was in CF, Santiago Espinal was at the hot corner. Teoscar Hernandez was in LF and Randal Grichuk was in RF.Bo Bichette got the half day off, serving as DH with Marcus Semien at SS and Cavan Biggio at 2B. Could the Blue Jays notch the series win? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled scoring Bo Bichette
- Two batters later, Randal Grichuk doubled home Guerrero Jr.
- The Red Sox took the lead in the top of the 2nd on a three-run blast to the opposite field in right by Bobby Dalbec also scoring Christan Vazquez and Hunter Renfroe
- Two batters later, Enrique Hernandez singled scoring Michael Chavis
- Two batters later, JD Martinez singled home Hernandez
- The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Bichette doubled scoring Marcus Semien
- The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 5th on a fielding error by Rafael Devers on a ball hit by Teoscar Hernandez that scored Semien
- Two batters later, Cavan Biggio singled home Guerrero Jr.
- Nick Pivetta pitching line: 5IP 7H 5R (4 earned) 2BB 8K 95 pitches (63 fot strikes)
- The Blue Jays took the lead in the bottom of the 6th as Jonathan Davis singled scoring Danny Jansen
- Five batters later, Grichuk singled home Davis
- Steven Matz pitching line: 6IP 10H 5R (all earned) 2BB 4K 93 pitches (68 for strikes)
- The Red Sox got a run back in the top of the 9th on a ground out by Alex Verdugo that scored Dalbec
- A batter later, Martinez whacked a 2-run blast to right-center; also scoring Chavis
- Matt Barnes pitched a scoreless 9th for his 10th save of the season
- Final score; Red Sox 8 Blue Jays 7
My Take:
- The game started out rough for Matz as the Red Sox had a big 5 run inning in the 3rd off a 3run HR and a pair of RBI singles.. He was pitching his way in and out of trouble all night. His only clean 1-2-3 innings were the 1st and 6th innings - the first and last he pitched.
- Rafael Dolis had a brutal 9th inning for his 1st blown save of the season. He gave up 3 runs on 4 hits, walked one and capped it all off giving up a 2-run HR that put the Red Sox up by one. He started the inning with a 2-run lead, but he was wild from the start. Given he threw 29 pitches in the inning, it's unlikely he'll be available tomorrow
- Marcus Semien, Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Randal Grichuk went a combined 8-18, scored 5 runs and drove in 4 runs.
- The Blue Jays were 5-14 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, the Blue Jays kick off a crucial 4-game set vs. the Rays, who are second in the AL East, a game and a half ahead of the Blue Jays, who dropped to 4th in the AL East after 2 consecutive losses. The Blue Jays got a rare series win at Tropicana Field, taking 2-3 April 23-25. The pitching matchup tomorrow will feature Rays ace Tyler Glasnow pitching against an unannounced Blue Jays pitcher.

Game #41 Boston Red Sox (26-18) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-18) - game recap
Marcus Semien hit a 2-run HR in a losing effort as the Red Sox knocked off the Blue Jays 7-3
The Blue Jays continued a crucial series vs. the Red Sox. A win tonight would vault them into 1st in the AL East for the first time in forever. That the Blue Jays accomplished this in spite of tons of injuries, including to star free agent George Springer, who's played all of 4 games due to a nagging quad injury and an earlier oblique strain. They've started 12 different pitchers (tops in the MLB). Bo Bichette has been nothing sort of an adventure in the field. On the plus side, Vlad has been looking as good as his father back in the day. Hyun-Jin Ryu has been an ace, Steven Matz has been a pleasant surprise and the bullpen has been lights out most nights. Tonight, Ross Stripling got the start and was looking to keep his spot in the rotation. Blue Jays hitters had to contend with Red Sox righty Garrett Richards. Teoscar Hernandez was back in RF, Cavan Biggio was at the hot corner and Jonathan Davis was in CF. Reese McGuire got the start behind the plate. Randal Grichuk got the half day off, serving as the DH. Could the Blue Jays make it 4 wins in a row? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Alex Verdugo clobbered a 2-run bomb to right; also scoring Enrique Hernandez
- A batter later, JD Martinez hammered a solo bomb to right-center
- Three batters later, Xander Bogaerts scored on a ground out by Christian Vazquez
- Two batters later, Bobby Dalbec doubled home Rafael Devers
- The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled scoring Bo Bichette
- The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 2nd as Hernandez smacked a solo blast to left-center
- Ross Stripling pitching line: 3.2IP 8H 6R (all earned) 0BB 3K 76 pitches (51 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays got a pair back in the bottom of the 7th as Marcus Semien hooked a two-run blast just inside the left field line; also scoring Reese McGuire
- Garrett Richards pitching line: 6.2IP 7H 2R (both earned) 4BB 5K 99 pitches (64 for strikes)
- Final score: Red Sox 7 Blue Jays 3
My Take:
- It was a rough go for Ross Stripling, who was lit up for 6 runs (all earned) on 8 hits while walking none and striking out 3. The Red Sox were on the Blue Jays righty right from the get-go, with 3 runs scored on less than ten pitches. The first five batters had hits before Stripling got an out, and even that produced a run. He did settle down and retire the final eight batters he faced, but you can't regularly spot an opponent 5 runs and expect to stay in the rotation long-term
- Reese McGuire is taking full advantage of his second chance after he was DFA'd after a dreadful season last year that led to Alejandro Kirk, currently out for a month with an injury), getting recalled. McGuire was 2-3 today, bumping his average to an impressive .400 in a small sample size.
- The Blue Jays had plenty of opportunity to score and they failed to do so. They were 1-9 with runners in scoring position tonight.
- Marcus Semien might be difficult to knock out of the leadoff spot if/when George Springer is ever ready to play. He was 2-3 tonight, including a 2-run HR and drew a pair of walks
- The bullpen was decent tonight, giving up a run, 5 hits, walking none and struck out 8 over the final 5.1 innings
- Up next, the Blue Jays go for the series win. Red Sox righty Nick Pivetta pitches against Blue Jays lefty Steven Matz

Game #39 Boston Red Sox (25-18) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-17) - game recap
Danny Jansen was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI in an 8-0 shutout win over the Red Sox
After winning 2/3 vs. the Phillies over the weekend, the Blue Jays continued the homestand, opened a 3-game set again the Red Sox. Boston and Toronto split a pair of games April 20-21 at Fenway Park. The Blue Jays come into the series a game and a half back of the Red Sox for 1st place in the AL East. If the playoffs were to start tonight, the Blue Jays would host the WC game against the Astros. On the injury front, there was good news. Rafael Dolis was activated off the IL after missing 10 days with a calf strain. Thomas Hatch will begin a rehab assignment in triple-A after missing more than 2 months with a right elbow impingenent. George Springer is seemingly a ways off returning, since he is still only jogging. Expect him to maybe be ready after the all-star game at the earliest. He'll definitely need a rehab assignment before he rejoins the team. It was a battle of the lefties tonight with Hyun-jin Ryu taking on Eduardo Rodriguez. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. got the half day off as DH with Teoscar Hernandez in LF and Cavan Biggio in RF. Espinal Santiago was at the hot corner tonight. Could the Blue Jays make it three wins in a row? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Danny Jansen singled scoring Randal Grichuk
- The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th on a single by Marcus Semien and subsequent throwing error by Hunter Renfroe that scored Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Jansen
- A batter later, Bo Bichette doubled home Semien
- The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 5th as Gurriel Jr. singled home Teoscat Hernandez
- Eduardo Rodriguez pitching line: 5IP 11H 5R (all earned) 1BB 6K 87 pitches (57 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 6th as Hernandez singled scoring Bichette
- Hyun-Jin Ryu pitching line: 7IP 4H 0R 0BB 7K 100 pitches (67 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th as Grichuk cranked a 2-run blast to the opposite field in right; also scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr,
- Blue Jays 8 Red Sox 0
My Take:
- Hyun-Jin Ryu threw seven shutout innings, allowing 4 runs while walking none and striking out 6. At one point, Ryu retired 8 in a row. Just like Roy Halladay, Ryu looks like he's pitching from a rocking chair. He's so smooth and methodical in his delivery
- Bo Bichette had an adventurous day in the field, bobbling a couple of grounders and making a wide throw to Vlad. Tonight was his 8th error, the most since his rookie year in 2019 where he made 7 errors in 42 games. Perhaps the Blue Jays should consider moving him to a different position.
- Offensively, the Bklue Jays exploded for 8 runs on 18 hits. They only drew 2 walks. Every Blue Jays batter had at least one hit. Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Teoscar Hernandez and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. all had 3 hit nights
- Don't look now but Danny Jansen has dragged his average up to .143 and he had 2 hits tonight
- Up next, the Blue Jays go for the series win and the chance to be first in the AL East. Blue Jays righty Ross Stripling goes up against Red Sox righty Garrett Richards

Game #39 Philadelphia Phillies (21-20) @ Toronto Blue Jays (22-17) - game recap
Marcus Semien was 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI as the Blue Jays held on to to defeat the Phillies 10-8
The Blue Jays wrapped up the season series with the Phillies this afternoon. The two teams split the first 2 games. Today, Robbie Ray got the start. Ray threw 6 strong innings vs. the Braves 5 days ago and struck out 10 batters. In his career vs the Phillies, Ray is 2-2 with a 5.51ERA over 6 starts heading into today's start. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after a day off yesterday. Santiago Espinal got the start at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays win the series? Here is today's game recap.

- The Phillies got one back in the top of the 9th as Miller singled home Bohm
- Two batters later Herrera singled scoring Miller
- Final score: Blue Jays 10 Phillies 8
My Take:
- Robbie Ray threw 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on seven hits while walking 1 and striking out 9. Ray escaped a bases loaded jam in the 1st inning on a pair of hits and a hit batter. He then proceeded to retire the next 10 batters, before Rafael Marchan reached on a fielding error by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. The Phillies got to him in the 5th with back to back solo HR and a triple that came around to score. Ray escaped the inning and nearly got through the 6th, but gave up another solo HR. Ray threw 112 pitches, the most by a Blue Jays pitcher this season
- On the offensive side, the Blue Jays jumped all over ex-teammate Chase Anderson, tagging him for 7 runs on 8 hits and a walk. Anderson did not record a strikeout
- The top 3 hitters: Marcus Semien, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. were a combined 8-15 with 6 runs scored and 7 RBI
- Every Blue Jays starter had at least 1 hit
- Up next, after an off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays begin a three game set with the Red Sox. The two teams split a pair of games at Fenway Park back on April 20-21. The Red Sox will send lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to the bump Tuesday. The Blue Jays have not named a starting pitcher.

Game #38 Philadelphia Phillies (21-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (21-17) - game recap
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in a run, scored a run and the Blue Jays scored a 3rd run off a fielding error on a ball hit by him in a 4-0 shutout win over the Phillies
After a late inning loss last night courtesy of a rough 8th inning for the Blue Jays bullpen, which has been outstanding to date, the Blue Jays were looking to even the series. Anthony Kay got the start. Vlad was back in the field after a half day off yesterday as the DH and Rowdy Tellez served as DH tonight. Reese McGuire got the start behind the plate. Could the Blue Jays even the series and set up a rubber match Sunday? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hammered a solo bomb to dead center
- The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 2nd on a double by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and a fielding error by Phillies SS Nick Matan that scored Cavan Biggio
- Two batters later, Reese McGuire singled home Gurriel Jr.
- Anthony Kay pitching line: 4IP 1H 0R 2BB 6K 79 pitches (50 for strikes)
- Aaron Nola pitching line: 6.2IP 9H 3R (all earned) 1BB 8K 103 pitches (67 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 8th as Randal Grichuk scored on a fielding error by Jean Segura on a ball hit by Gurriel Jr.
- Final score: Blue Jays 4 Phillies 0
My Take:
- Anthony Kay had a solid start, throwing 4 shutout innings, allowing a hit, walking 2, hitting a batter and striking out 6. He came into this game with his spot in the rotation in doubt. He did enough to earn another start
- The bullpen allowed a combined five hits, walked 2 and struck out 8 over the final 5 innings
- The Phillies defense committed three errors tonight, leading to two runs, one of which was unearned
- Every Blue Jays starter, except Marcus Semien had at least 1 hit
- The Blue Jays were 2-10 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, the rubber match. Sunday's matinee will feature former Blue Jays pitcher going up against current Blue Jays lefty Robbie Ray. Anderson was 1-2 with a 7.22ERA in 10 games (7 starts) asa Blue Jay in 2020
Game #37 Philadelphia Phillies (21-18) @ Toronto Blue Jays (20-17) - game recap
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smacked a solo HR in a 5-1 loss to the Phillies
The Blue Jays opened a 10-day 11-day homestand - their final homestand in Dunedin. They will play home games out of Buffalo either for the bulk of the season or until they can play in Toronto. The two squads split the season series last season with the Phillies outscoring the Blue Jays 31-23. Some bad news to start the day. Nate Pearson is dealing with right shoulder impingement and will miss at least one start. Steven Matz got the start tonight. Ryan Borucki was placed on the 10 day IL with a left flexor strain. Vlad got the half day off as DH with Rowdy Tellez at 1B. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after the day off yesterday. Could the Blue Jays make it 4 wins in a row? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- Steven Matz pitching line: 5IP 4H 0R 3BB 9K 106 pitches (65 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 6th as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. cranked a solo blast to the opposite field in right
- Vince Velasquez pitching line: 5.2IP 3H 1R (earned) 3BB 7K 94 pitches (58 for strikes)
- The Phillies tied the game in the top of the 7th on a bases loaded walk to JT Realmuto that forced in Andrew Knapp
- A batter later, Rhys Hoskins doubled scoring Jean Segura and Bryce Harper
- A batter after that, Alec Bohm doubled home Realmuto and Hoskins
- Final score: Philles 5 Blue Jays 1
My Take:
- Steven Matz had a solid outing throwing 5 shutout innings, while walking 3 and striking out 9. He threw a ton of pitches, needing an average of over 20 pitches to get through an inning. I'm sure Matz would rather have avoided walking the three batters he did to save a few bullets. At one point, Matz retired 6 in a row.
- It was a big 5-run inning that was the difference in this one. Trent Thornton and Tim Mayza combined to allow 5 runs on 4 walks and 2 20run doubles (Andrew Beasley actually gave up the second 2-run double, but the runs were charged to Mayza
- Offensively, the Blue Jays were 0-7 with runners in scoring position
- Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was the only Blue Jays hitter with multiple hits (2). Vlad was also on base multiple times coirtesy of a solo home run and a walk
- Up next, the Blue Jays try to even the series. Aaron Nola gets the start against an unannounced Blue Jays pitcher

Game #36 Toronto Blue Jays (20-16) @ Atlanta Braves (17-20) - game recap
Bo Bichette drove in 3 runs and scored twice in an 8-4 come-from-behind victory over the Braves. It was the Blue Jays first season series sweep over the Braves since 2006
After a strong win last night on the backs of a strong pitching performance from Hyun-Jin Ryu and a 2 HR effort from Teoscar Hernandez, the Blue Jays were going for the season series sweep against the Braves. Ross Stripling got the start against Braves ace Charlie Morton. Reese McGuire got the start behind the plate. Randal Grichuk was given the day off. Could the Blue Jays complete the season series sweep vs. the Braves? Here is today's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Braves opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Ronald Acuna Jr. hammered the first pitch by Ross Stripling into the 2nd deck in left
- Four batters later, Ehire Adrianza singled home Freddie Freeman
- The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 2nd as Jonathan Davis singled scoring Cavan Biggio
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the 5th as Bo Bichette singled home Reese McGuire
- Two batters later, Teoscar Hernandez singled scoring Bichette
- Charlie Morton pitching line: 4.2IP 7H 3R (all earned) 2BB 4K 94 pitches (57 for strikes)The
- Ross Stripling pitching line: 5IP 4H 2R (both earned) 1BB 9K 84 pitches (55 for strikes)
- The Braves took the lead in the bottom of the 7th as Dansby Swanson crushed a 2-run blast to the upper deck in left; also scoring Marcell Ozuna. They also lost outfielder Cristian Pache to a leg injury
- scary moment in the bottom of the 7th: Acuna Jr. was injured while trying to beat out an infield single. After several moments writhing in agony, he was able to leave the field under his own power
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the 8th as Biggio doubled home Hernandez
- The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 9th as Bichette doubled scoring Danny Jansen and Marcus Semen
- Two batters later, Biggio doubled home Bichette
- A batter later, Hernandez scored on a sac fly by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
- Final score: Blue Jays 8 Braves 4
My Take:
- Ross Stripling faced a crucial start as the Blue Jays start to get their pitchers back from the IL. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 9. He had a rough start in the first inning with Ronald Acuna finding the upper deck on his first pitch of the game, He then allowed a second run on a further three hits. He settled down nicely after that, retiring seven in a row at one point and allowing just one base runner after the 1st inning on a walk. Stripling was 0-1 at the plate and had one successful sac bunt
- The bullpen was strong again, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, walking one and striking out 6 over the game's final 4 innings. Tim Mayza was touched up for both runs as Dansby Swanson crushed a 2-run bomb into the second deck. Jordan Romano struck out the side in the 9th
- It's the first time the Blue Jays swept a season series over Atlanta since 2006, and this was more impressive since they only had one 3-game series in 2008; whereas they had to win 6 games this time around
- Timely hitting and a huge 4-run 9th inning was the difference in this one.
- Bo Bichette (3 RBI, 2 runs scored), Cavan Biggio (2RBI 1 run scored), Marcus Semien (run scored) and Reese McGuire (run scored) drove the offense today.
- Up next, the Blue Jays head home to Dunedin to begin a 10-game in 11 days home stand beginning with a weekend series vs. the Phillies. It will be the last home stand in Dunedin. The Blue Jays will play out of Buffalo starting June 1st against Miami. This will either be for the balance of the season or until the Canadian border reopens and/or the Blue Jays get permission to play out of Toronto again. Last season, the Blue Jays and Phillies split the 6 games and the Phillies outscored the Blue Jays 31-26. On Friday, the Blue Jays will send lefty Steven Matz to the mound against Phillies righty Vince Velasquez.

Game #34 Toronto Blue Jays (18-16) @ Atlanta Braves (17-18) - game recap
After dropping 2 of 3 vs. the Astros over the weekend, the Blue Jays continued the road trip with a trio of games against the Braves, who they swept in Dunedin a week ago. Today Robbie Ray was on the bump, looking to replicate a strong start last time out. It's the first time, and perhaps last time, pitchers will have to bat. Reese McGuire got the start behind the plate and Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing Sunday. After a rough start, Nate Pearson was optioned to AAA to work on his arsenal. Righty Jeremy Beasley was recalled from AAA. Could the Blue Jays make it four in a row vs. the Braves? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Braves opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Ozzie Albies singled home Ronald Acuna
- The Braves added a run in the bottom of the 3rd as Acuna hammered a solo bomb to straightaway center
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the 6th as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. lined a 2-run blast to the opposite field in right; also scoring Marcus Semien
- The Braves retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a solo bomb to left-center by Marcell Ozuna
- Bryse Wilson pitching line: 6IP 6H 2R (both earned) 0BB 5K 84 pitches (58 for strikes)
- Robbie Ray pitching line: 6IP 5H 3R (all earned) 1BB 10K 99 pitches (67 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the 8th as Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Jonathan Davis
- A batter later, Teoscar Hernandez singled scoring Semien
- Two batters later, Bo Bichette scored on a bases loaded walk to Cavan Biggio
- Jordan Romano pitched the 9th for his 1st save of the season
- Final score: Blue Jays 5 Braves 3
My Take:
- Robbie Ray had himself a quality start, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits while walking one and striking out ten. He pitch out of a jam in the 1st inning, giving up run on 2 hits and a walk.. At one point, he retired nine in a row before the Ozuna HR. He earned a no decision after the Blue Jays bailed him out in the 8th with 3 runs. At the plate, he was 0-2 and popped out trying to sac bunt to move Reese McGuire over to second base. He also grounded out leading off the 6th inning. Ray is one of the Blue Jays more experienced pitchers offensively having played 147 games as a starting pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks. In his career, he has a .142 average and 25 sac bunts
- Jonathan Davis nearly ran himself into an out in the 8th, just sliding back into 2nd base ahead of the throw from Braves reliever AJ Minter. Had he been called out, it might have changed the Braves approach to Bo Bichette. They might have been able to get out of the inning on a double play. Instead, Davis scored a couple of batters later and the Blue Jays added 2 more runs to take a 2-run lead. Davis was thrown at home out to end the 9th trying to secure a 3-run lead
- Vlad was a big catalyst of the offense today with not one but two game-tying hits
- Both bullpens threw three innings. The Blue Jays relievers allowed 2 hits and a walk while striking out 3, The Braves relievers allowed 5 hits, 3 runs and a walk and struck out 5. All three runs were charged to AJ Minter, who did not record an out
- Rowdy Tellez blew a chance to extend the lead. He flew out to left, but not deep enough to score Vlad
- Up next, the Blue Jays look to make it five in a row vs. Atlanta. Tomorrow features a battle of the lefties as the Blue Jays send ace Hyun-Jin Ryu to the hill against Braves southpaw Max Fried

Game #33 Toronto Blue Jays (17-16) @ Houston Astros (18-16) - game recap
Sorry guys, just a quick preamble as I need to start work in 14 minutes. After the Astros and Blue Jays split the first two games of the weekend series, today was the rubber match. Nate Pearson made his first start of the season after missing the first five weeks with a groin strain. Reliever Rafael Dolis was placed on the 10-day IL with a calf strain. Blue Jays batters were in tough with Zack Greinke on the bump for the Astros. Vlad got the half day off, serving as the DH with Rowdy Tellez at 1B. Reese McGuire got the start behind the plate. Could the Blue Jays make it two wins in a row? Here is today's game recap.
Game Highlights:88 pitches
- The Astros opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd on a bases loaded walk to Michael Brantley that forced in Kyle Tucker
- The Astros added a run in the bottom of the 3rd as Tucker tripled home Yuli Gurriel
- A batter later, Robel Garcia singled scoring Tucker
- Nate Pearson pitching line: 2.1IP 4H 3R (all earned) 5BB 0K 64 pitches (28 for strikes)
- The Astros added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Jose Altuve smacked a solo shot to the opposite field in right
- Five batters later, Tucker drilled a three-run bomb to the second deck in right; also scoring Yordan Alvarez and Gurriel
- The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 5th as Rowdy Tellez hammered a solo bomb to the second deck in right
- Three batters later, Bo Bichette doubled scoring Reese McGuire and Marcus Semien
- A batter later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, singled home Bichette
- Zack Greinke pitching line: 4IP 9H 4R (all earned) 0BB 4K 88 pitches (57 for strikes)
- Ryan Preesly pitched a perfect 9th for his 6th save of the season
- Final score: Astros 7 Blue Jays 4
My Take:
- Not a great start for Nate Pearson today. He had zero command. He gave up 3 runs on 4 hits while walking 5 and striking out none. Did he have some nerves and maybe adrenaline given it was his first start of the season? I'm sure. It's not a good sign if your catcher is setting up in the middle of the plate and you're still missing the strike zone by a lot. He also threw less than half his pitches for strikes. It's great to be able to hit triple digits on the radar gun. However, you also need secondary pitches you can throw for strikes. Pearson also needs to learn the same lesson Steven Strasburg and know that he can be just as effective, if not more effective, throwing a few degrees slower and hitting his spots instead of overthrowing and missing badly, as he was today.
- Blue Jay batters had one inning where they got to Zack Greinke to the tune of four runs on five hits. Unfortunately, the bullpen effectively shut the Blue Jays down in the final 5 innings, giving up 2 hits and striking out 7
- Quirky play of the day: Lourdes Guirrel Jr. was out after a batted ball hit him
- Every Blue Jays starter except Randal Grichuk and Cavan Biggio had at least one hit today
- The Blue Jays were 2-7 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, after an off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays open a three-game series in Atlanta. They swept the series in Dunedin a week ago. Neither team has announced their pitchers for the 1st game Tuesday yet.

Game #32 Toronto Blue Jays (17-15) @ Houston Astros (17-16) - game recap
Marcus Semien hit a clutch 3-run HR in the top of the 9th in an 8-4 victory over the Astros
After getting spanked by the Astros last night, the Blue jays were looking to even the weekend series. Sportsnet analyst Joe Sidell had an interesting take in last night's game. He felt that Blue Jays Catcher Danny Jansen might have been tipping pitch location and in particular an early home run to Yuli Gurriel that was inside and absolutely hammered. The Astros were infamously caught cheating in their 2017 World series win by banging garbage cans. Last night was a legal tactic, involving probably the on-deck hitter or bench whistling at the batter. Teams are always going to look for an advantage in the game, if you're not then you really have no business playing. It's why catchers and pitchers will often do a mound visit with a runner on second to change up the signs. Rafael Dolis was placed on the IL after leaving last night's game with a tight calf. AJ Cole was recalled from the Alt. squad. Alejandro Kirk was transferred to the 60-day IL. The struggling Steven Matz got the start. Same lineup as yesterday. Could the Blue Jays even the series to set up a rubber match Sunday? Here is tonight's game recap
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd as Cavan Biggio smashed a 2-run blast to right; also scoring Randal Grichuk
- The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 3rd as Danny Jansen hammered a solo bomb to left
- Five batters later, Grichuk doubled home Marcus Semien and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- The Astros got a pair back in the bottom of the 4th as Yordan Alvarez hammered an opposite-field 2-run shot to left; also scoring Alex Bregman
- The Astros got one back in the bottom of the 5th as Alvarez singled home Aledmys Diaz
- Steven Matz pitching line: 5IP 8H 3R (all earmed) 0BB 4K 92 pitches (63 for strikes)]
- Cristian Javier pitching line: 5.1IP 4H 5R (all earned) 4BB 8K 91 pitches (55 for strikes)
- The Astros got one back in the bottom of the 8th on a ground out by Yuli Gurriel that scored Bregman
- The Blue Jays added three runs in the top of the 9th as Semien hammered a three-run bomb to left; also scoring Cavan Biggio and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
- Final score: Blue Jays 8 Astros 4
My Take:
- Steven Matz had a better outing, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits while walking none and striking out 4 over 5 innings. He started out great, retiring the first 8 Astros he faced. The second time through the order was where he ran into trouble. Batters 3-5 (Alex Bregman, Yonder Alonso and Yuli Gurriel touched Matz up for 2 runs on 3 hits in the 3rd inning. The big thing out of tonight's start was the zero walks and commanding his change-up, which was lacking in recent starts
- Randal Grichuk continues to swing a hot bat.. He was 1-3 with a pair of RBI, a run scored and he drew a walk.
- Danny Jansen is also swinging a hot bat lately too. He homered for the 3rd consecutive game. He appeared to do a better job of not giving away location by sliding over too early
- The bullpen gave up just a hit and a run over the final 4 innings and they had a combined 3 strikeouts
- Up next, the rubber match. Nate Pearson will make his season debut after missing the first 5 weeks with a groin strain. He may be on reduced pitch count given it is his first start, but he threw almost 80 pitches in a rehab start a few days ago. Blue Jays batters will face Astros ace Zack Greinke
Game #31 Toronto Blue Jays (16-15) @ Houston Astros (17-15) - game recap
Teoscar Hernandez smacked a 2-run HR in a losing effort as the Astros knocked off the Blue Jays 10-4
After splitting the four-game series against Oakland, the Blue Jays continued the road trip, opening a weekend series against the Houston Astros. In 2019, Houston took the season series 4-2 and outscored the Blue Jays 35-26. George Springer will not get to face his former team this time around as he is on the 10-day IL with a quad strain. Ross Stripling makes his 4th start of the season and second since returning from his own IL stint. Rowdy Tellez served as DH tonight. Randall Grichuk was back in the field in CF. Could the Blue Jays make it three wins in a row? Here is tonight's game recap
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Bo Bichette hammered a solo bomb to left-center
- The Astros took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd as Carlos Correa annihilated a 2-run bomb just inside the foul pole in left; also scoring Yuli Gurriel
- Six batters later a bases loaded walk to Alex Bregman forced in Martin Maldanado
- The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 4th on a moonshot to left-center by Danny Jansen
- Ross Stripling pitching line: 3.2IP 6H 3R (all earned) 3BB 3K 82 pitches (49 for strikes)
- The Astros added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th as Gurriel whacked a 2-run blast to left-center; also scoring Yordan Alvarez
- The Astros added a run in the bottom of the 7th as Gurriel singled scoring Bregman
- Two batters later, Kyle Tucker doubled home Alvarez
- Jose Urquidy pitching line: 7IP 4H 2R (both earned) 1BB 2K 84 pitches (61 for strikes)
- The Astros added a run in the bottom of the 8th as Bregman doubled scoring Jose Altuve
- A batter later, Michael Brantley scored on a groundout by Alvarez
- A batter later, Bregman scored on a sac fly by Gurriel
- The Blue Jays got a pair back in the top of the 9th as Teoscar Hernandez smacked an opposite-field shot to right; also scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- Final score: Astros 10 Blue Jays 4
My Take:
- Rough outing for Ross Stripling. The Blue Jays righty gave up3 runs on 6 hits while walking 3 and striking out 3. He had a particular bad inning in the 2nd where he gave up three runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. The damage was done on a mistake pitch that almost left the stadium and a bases loaded walk. Stripling has some command issue to work through.
- The bullpen had an even worse night, combining to allow seven runs on 9 hits and 2 walks. Tim Mayza gave up a 2-run HR. Ty Tice spotted the Astros a pair of runs on five hits. Rafael Dolis gave up a pair of runs on a hit and a walk and Ryan Borucki was responsible for the final Astro run. Trent Thornton was the only pitcher to retire every batter he faced. The bullpen has been relied on a lot early on, so it's no surprise they have some tired arms and were ineffective tonight
- The Blue Jays did not get enough offense. Aside from the 3 home runs that led to 4 runs, the Blue Jays barely got anyone on base. They were 0-2 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, the Blue Jays will be looking to even the weekend series. Steven Matz, who has had his own struggles lately, goes up against Astros righty Cristian Javier, who has only ever faced Marcus Semien in on AB.

Game #30 Toronto Blue Jays (16-14) @ Oakland A's (19-14)- game recap
Randsal Grichuk drove in 5 runs and scored a run as the Blue Jaus knocked off the A's 10-4
The Blue Jays wrapped up a four-game series against the Oakland A's. It was the 4th straight time a southpaw started for the Blue Jays (Steven Matz pitched the opener Monday, Anthony Kay pitched Tuesday, Robbie Ray was up yesterday and Hyun-jin Ryu got the start today). Several injury updates were provided today by GM Ross Atkins. George Springer will likely be on the IL longer than the 10-day minimum. His high pain tolerance will be a factor in decisions about playing (reading between the lines, Blue Jays are likely to keep him on IL longer than necessary and he'll be DH'ing more than playing CF this season). Alejandro Kirk is expected to miss a month with a hip flexor injury. David Phelps is heading to the IL with a lat strain. Joe Panik is feeling much better after leaving yesterday with a tweaked calf. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after the day off yesterday. Vlad was back in the field after serving as DH yesterday. Randal Grichuk got the half day off as DH. Jonathan Davis was in CF and Teoscar Hernandez was in RF. Cavan Biggio was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays make it 2 wins in a row? Here is today's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The A's opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Mark Cahna led off with a solo blast down the left-field line
- The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 3rd as Randal Grichuk hammered a 3-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Marcus Semien and Teoscar Hernandez
- The A's got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a ground-rule double hit by Matt Olson that scored Tony Kemp
- A batter later Sean Murphy singled scoring Ramon Laureano and Olson
- The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the top of the 4th as Danny Jansen crushed a 2-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Jonathan Davis
- Matt Fiers pitching line: 3.1IP 9H 5R (all earned)2BB 2K 69 pitches (43 for strikes)
- Hyun-jin Ryu pitching line: 5IP 6H 4R (all earned) 1BB 6K 91 pitches (58 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the top of the 6th as Hernandez singled home Semien and Bo Bichette
- A batter later, Grichuk doubled scoring Hernandez and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 7th as Semien whacked a solo blast to left
- Final score Blue Jays 10 A's 4
My Take:
- Hyun-jin Ryu, in his return from a glute strain, threw 5 innings, giving up4 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6. The game didn't start out the way he'd want it to, giving up a home run to the first batter he faced. Ryu settled down and retired the next 3 batters to end the inning. The one inning where he got in trouble was the 3rd, where Ryu gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk. Ryu retired 6 batters in a row at one point. The biggest measuring stick will be how he is feeling tomorrow, given he is coming off an injury.
- Marcus Semien had a huge day at the plate, going 4-6 with 3 runs scored and an RBI
- everyone but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had at least one hit and Vlad drew a walk
- Up next, the Blue Jays head to Houston for a weekend series vs. the Astros. George Springer will not get to face his former team due to being on the IL with a recurring quad strain. Ross Stripling will come off the IL to pitch against Astros righty Jose Urquldy
Game #29 Toronto Blue Jays (15-14) @ Oakland A's (19-13)- game recap
Randal Grichuk was 3-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI in a 9-4 come-from behind victory over the A's
After dropping the first 2 games on this road trip, the Blue Jays were looking to get back in the win column. Big news today: the Blue Jays will move to Buffalo June 1st to play their home games. They'll play out of Dunedin for this month. AAA-affiliate Buffalo Bisons will play out of nearby Trenton, NJ. High-A affiliate Vancouver Canadians, who began their season with a 4-0 loss to Tri-City, will be playing their home games in Hillsboro, Oregon. Both the Blue Jays and Canadians hope the US/Canada will reopen at some point this summer. That's all dependent on the COVID-19 cases dropping and enough people being vaccinated. Reese McGuire is back, added to the roster with backup Alejandro Kirk out around 6 weeks with a hip flexor injury. McGuire was released in spring training. He batted an abysmal .073 in 2020 in 41AB over 19 games. He'll catch Robbie Ray tonight. Riley Adams was optioned to AAA. Julian Merryweather was transferred to the 60-day IL. Tanner Roark cleared release waivers and is now a free agent. Vlad got the half day off, serving as the DH with Joe Panik getting the start at 1B tonight. George Springer missed his 3rd straight game and could well be headed for another IL stint. Cavan Biggio got the start at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays snap the losing streak? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Teoscar Hernandez singled home Bo Bichette
- A batter later, Randal Grichuk singled scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- The A's got one back in the bottom of the 2nd as Ramon Laureano belted a solo blast to right-center
- The A's tied the game in the bottom of the 4th as Matt Chapman lined a screamer over the wall in left-center
- The A's took the lead in the bottom of the 6th as Sean Murphy doubled scoring Laureano
- Robbie Ray pitching line: 6IP 6H 3R (all earned), 0BB 9K 95 pitches (68 for strikes)
- Chris Bassitt pitching line: 7IP 6H 2R (both earned) 0BB 7K 90 pitches (63 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the 8th on a wild pitch by Lou Trivino that scored Jonathan Davis
- A batter later, Hernandez singled home Bichette
- A batter after that, Grichuk singled scoring Guerrero Jr.
- A batter later, Cavan Biggio plated Hernandez with a beauty sac bunt
- A batter later, Grichuk scored on a ground out by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
- The A's got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Murphy doubled home Matt Olson
- The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the top of the 9th as Guerrero Jr. doubled scoring Bichette and Davis
- Final score: Blue Jays 9 A's 4
My Take:
- Robbie Ray has really turned things around since he's been working under the guidance of Pete Walker. He threw 6 solid innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits while walking none and striking out nine. For the second day in a row, both pitchers had similar pitching lines. Both starters allowed 6 hits and didn't walk a batter. Ray allowed an extra run (3) and threw 5 extra pitches (95). Chris Bassitt threw an extra inning (7). Ray also threw 5 more strikes (68).
- It was a big 8th inning that saw the Blue Jays score 5 runs on a wild pitch, 2 consecutive singles, a beauty sac bunt and a ground out. I love it when the team manufactures other ways besides the home run.
- Now that Springer's back on the IL, it will be one of Marcus Semien or Cavan Biggio batting in the leadoff spot. It was Semien's turn tonight. He was 1-4 and drew a walk
- Reese McGuire had a good game defensively, but was 0-2 at the plate and drew an 8th inning walk to start the rally.
- Jonathan Davis scored twice without getting a hit (he came around to score after pinch-running for McGuire in the 8th and drew a walk in the 9th and then scored on Guerrero Jr's double
- Another pitcher went down for the Blue Jays. David Phelps was supposed to pitch the 8th, but was pulled before ever throwing a pitch. He felt discomfort warming up
- Joe Panik also left the game after his calf seized up on him. Expect at least one of Phelps and Panik to join the IL
- Up next, the Blue Jays wrap up the series vs. Oakland with a matinee. Hyun-Jin Ryu will come off the IL for the start after missing a turn after straining his glute muscle. The A's will counter with righty Mike Fiers

Game #28 Toronto Blue Jays (14-14) @ Oakland A's (19-12)- game recap
Marcus Semien drove in the Blue Jays only run on his first hit against his former team in a 4-1 loss to the A's
After a loss to Oakland in Marcus Semien's return to the Bay area after signing a one year deal with the Blue Jays in the off-season, the Blue Jays were looking to even up the series. Anthony Kay got the ball first in what's expected to be a bullpen day. Bo Bichette got the half day off as the DH. Cavan Biggio got the start at 2B with Teoscar Hernandez in RF. Santiago Espinal was at the hot corner today and Marcus Semien was at SS. Could the Blue Jays even this 4-game series? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The A's opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Jed Lowrie doubled scoring Sean Murphy and Matt Chapman
- A batter later, Mitch Moreland drove an opposite-field 2-run shot over the left-field wall; also scoring Lowrie
- Anthony Kay pitching line: 4IP 4H 4R (all earned) 2BB 4K 71 pitches (41 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 6th as Marcus Semien doubled home Santiago Espinal
- Cole Irvin pitching line: 8IP 3H 1R (earned) 1BB 9K 102 pitches (71 for strikes)
- Yusmeiro Petit pitched a perfect 9th for his 1st save of the season
- Final score: A;s 4 Blue Jays 1
My Take:
- Anthony Kay gave up 4 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4 over 4 innings. He had three relatively good innings and one bad inning in the 2nd where he gave up a 4-spot on a 2-run double followed immediately by a 2-run tater. Given the thin healthy pitching available, it's likely Kay will remain in the rotation another turn
- Quirky stat of the night: Cole Irvin threw the same # of strikes as Anthony Kay threw pitches. Both starters tonight threw almost identical # of balls (Irvin threw 31 balls and Kay threw 30 balls)
- Danny Jansen is ice cold again after going 2-3 Sunday. He's 0-8, including striking out swinging his last AB Sunday
- Actually the whole team was ice cold tonight, mustering just a single run on 3 hits and a walk. They were 0-1 with runners in scoring position
- Marcus Semien got a hit against his old team after going hitless last night. The double drove in the only Blue Jays run
- Up next, the Blue Jays try to snap the 2-game skid. Robbie Ray gets the start tomorrow night. The lefty bounced back nicely after walking a career-high 6 batters 2 starts ago. The A's will counter with righty Chris Bassitt

Game #27 Toronto Blue Jays (14-13) @ Oakland A's (18-12)- game recap
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was 3-4 with a run scored in a losing effort as the A's edged the Blue Jays 5-4
After sweeping the Braves over the weekend, the Blue Jays limped west to begin a 10-game in 11-day road trip. Tonight, they opened a 4-game series in Oakland. Toronto swept the season series 6-0 in 2019, outscoring the A's 36-13. The season series also included a season-ending ACL tear for ex-Jays pitcher Matt Shoemaker back on April 20, 2019 in a run down. The Blue Jays sent Steven Matz to the bump. Matz was looking to bounce back after a rough start last time out. George Springer was not in the lineup after getting pulled in the 6th inning yesterday with apparent fatigue. He appeared to be experiencing pain in the quad and did not look comfortable at the plate. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. got the half day, serving as the DH tonight. Cavan Biggio led off and got the start in RF. Randal Grichuk was in CF and Teoscar Hernandez got the start in LF. Joe Panik was at the hot corner tonight. Could the Blue Jays make it four wins in a row? Here is tonight's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The A's opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Jed Lowrie doubled home Matt Chapman
- A batter later, Stephen Piscotty hammered a 2-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Lowrie
- The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 3rd as Bo Bichette singled home Danny Jansen
- Two batters later, Teoscar Hernandez singled scoring Bichette and Cavan Biggio
- The A's added two runs in the bottom of the 5th as Ramon Laureno annihilated a two-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Tony Kemp
- Steven Matz pitching line: 5IP 7H 5R (all earned) 1BB 6K 92 pitches (62 for strikes)
- Frankie Montas pitching line: 6IP 7H 3R (all earned) 1BB 4K 88 pitches (62 for strikes)
- The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 8th on a wild pitch by Lou Trivino that scored Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- Jake Diekman pitched a perfect 9th for his 3rd save of the season
- Final score: A's 5 Blue Jays 4
My Take:
- Steven Matz threw 5 innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits, while walking one and striking out 6. Two mistake pitches cost him four runs. He was pitching in and out of trouble all night and A's batters were forcing him into deep counts. Perhaps Matz should review video from his first three starts and see where he was successful
- Marcus Semien made his return to Oakland. He was 1-3 against his former team and drew a walk and struck out once
- After snapping a 16-game hitless streak yesterday, Danny Jansen went 0-4 tonight, but did reach base on a fielder's choice in the 3rd inning and scored on Bichette's RBI single
- The Blue Jays had a great chance to tie the game with Randal Grichuk on 2B with 1 out in the 8th. Unfortunately Semien struck out swinging and Joe Panik lined out to center field
- The Blue Jays were 4-9 with runners in scoring position
- Up next, the Blue Jays look to even up the 4-game series. It will be a battle of the southpaws tomorrow night with Anthony Kay going up against A's lefty Cole Irvin

Game #25 Atlanta Braves (12-16) @ Toronto Blue Jays (14-12) - game recap
Danny Jansen snapped a 13-game hitless streak in a 7-2 victory over the Braves
It was both potential sweep day and getaway day. The Blue Jays wrapped up a week long homestand and were looking to sweep the Braves after a nice rout on Friday and a come from behind extra innings walk-off Saturday. There was both good and bad news injury wise. On the good news front, Ross Stripling was activated from the 10-day IL after missing a couple of weeks with a forearm strain. Onto the bad news. Alejandro Kirk (left flexor strain), Tommy Milone (left shoulder inflammation) and Anthony Castro (right forearm strain) were all added to the 10 day IL. Catcher Riley Adams and lefty Anthony Kay were added to the roster from the alt squad to fill the necessary roster spots. Danny Jansen got the start behind the plate. George Springer continues to DH as he works his way to full health from a nagging quad strain. Could the Blue Jays make it three wins in a row? Here is today's game recap.
Game Highlights:
- The Braves opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd as William Contreras singled scoring Ozzie Albies
- The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Danny Jansen singled home Randal Grichuk
- The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd as Marcus Semien doubled scoring Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Bichette doubled home Jansen
- The Braves got one back in the top of the 5th on a sac fly by Ronald Acuna that scored Austin Riley
- Ross Stripling pitching line: 4.1IP 5H 2R (both earned) 1BB 4K 70 pitches (44 for strikes)
- Ian Anderson pitching line: 4IP 6H 4R (all earned) 2BB 5K 89 pitches (56 for strikes)
- George Springer left the game in the 6th as he appeared to tweak his quad again. Joe Panik pinch hit for him
- The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th as Semien cranked a 2-run blast to left-center; also scoring Grichuk
- Four batters later, Panik doubled scoring Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
- Final score: Blue Jays 7 Braves 2
My Take:
- Ross Stripling pitched into the 5th inning, but could not get out of it to make him eligible for the win today. It was his first start since straining his right forearm April 15. He gave up a pair of runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4 over 4.1 innings. He had clean 1-2-3 innings in the 1st 3rd, and 4th and had to work out of jams in the 2nd and 5th. He retired 7 in a row at one point.
- Danny Jansen finally broke an 0-34 slump with an RBI single in the 2nd. Jansen was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. He also drew a walk
- There has to be concern with George Springer on the limp again. He was pinch hit for in the 6th and was grabbing at his leg yesterday too. The best thing is to shut him down, get him 100% and that includes being able to play in the field. Now that the minor league season has begun, Springer can be sent on a rehab assignment when he's physically ready
- Every Blue Jays starter except Springer, Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had at least one hit. All but Springer got on base at least once
- Up next, the Blue Jays begin a 10-game, 11-day road swing that begins tomorrow in Oakland and ends May 13 in Atlanta. The Blue Jays swept the season series against Oakland in 2019 6-0, including a season ending ACL tear to Matt Shoemaker April 20 in a run down. The Blue Jays outscored the A's 36-13. Tomorrow's pitching matchup will be lefty Steven Matz going up against an unannounced Oakland pitcher.
