Game #83- Boston Red Sox (41-42) @ Toronto Blue Jays (45-38) - game recap

Mitch White pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in a 5-0 shutout loss to the Red Sox

After edging the Giants yesdterday, thanks to a 2-run bomb off the bat of Vladdy, whi is set to hit in the home run derby of the upcoming all-star game, the Blue Jays were going for three straight wins and their first of the season against division rivals Boston Red Sox. The Blue jays suffered a 4-game sweep in Boston two months ago with the Red Sox outscoring the Blue Jays 32-19. Jose Berrios got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday (Alejandro Kirk served as DH tonight). The rest of the lineup was the same as yesterday's win over the Giants. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 3 games and win their first of the season against Boston? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the 5th as Justin Turner bashed a solo blast to left-center
  • The Red Sox added a pair of runs in the top of the 6th as as Jaren Durran belted a 2-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Connor Wong
  • Two batters later, Masataka Yoshida hammered a solo bomb to right-center
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 6IP 5H 4R (all earned) 0BB 8K 98 pitches (63 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 8th on a sac fly by Turner that scored Alex Verdugo
  • James Paxton pitching line: 7.2IP 3H 0R 2BB 7K 110 pitches (70 for strikes)
  • Final score: Red Sox 5 Blue Jays 0

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios threw 6 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits wgule walking none and striking out 8. The long ball hurt Berrios today, as the Red Sox took him yard three times for four runs over the 5th and 6th innings. After allowing a two-out hit in the 1st inning, Berrios retired ten in a row before Justin Turner went deep to break the scoreless tie.
  • The bullpen gave up a run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3 over the last 3 innings. Mist of the damage was done against Trent Thornton, who was charged with the run and gave up three of the base hits and walked a batter.
  • Offensively, not much happened. The Blue Jays managed a measly three hits and drew two walks. They could not take advantage of an egregious error in the top of the 9th when three Red Sox fielders collided on what looked like a sure out on a George Springer pop-up.
  • The Blue Jays need to find a way to beat their division rivals, otherwise the Blue Jays will either miss the playoffs completely or be swept in the 1st round since it will likely be an AL East team they would face in the wild card round.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to even the weekend series against the Red Sox. Yusei Kikuchi starts against Red Sox righty Kutter Crawford

Game #82- San Francisco Giants (45-36) @ Toronto Blue Jays (45-37) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero hit a 2-run HR in a 2-1 win over the Giants/

After a solid win on the backs of a 5-run 1st inning rally and a team effort from the bullpen on a bullpen day,  the Blue Jays were going for their second straight win,  16th series win and 6th season series win of the season. Alejandro Kirk was reinstated from the 10-day IL and Tyler Heineman was optioned back to AAA-ball. Chris Bassitt got the start with Kirk behind the plate.  Vladimir Guerrero Jr got the half day off as DH with Brandon Belt at 1B. Santiago Espinal was at 2B. Could the Blue Jays make it two straight wins, 16 series wins and 6 season series wins? Here is tonight's game recap

Game Highlights:

  • Giants manager Gabe Kapler and Giants 3B JD Davis were ejected at the end of the top of the 3rd for arguing balls and strikes. Davis was called out on strikes to end the inning
  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 6th as Vladimir Guerrero Jr annihilated a 2--run bomb to the second deck in left-center; also sitting Brandon Belt
  • Chris Bassitt pitching line: 6IP 3H 0R 3BB 12K 104 pitches (62 for strikes)
  • Keaton Winn pitching line: 6IP 3H 2R (both earned) 1BB 3K 67 pitches (46 for strikes)
  • The Giants got one back in the top of the 9th as Blake Sabol singled scoring Patrick Bailey
  • Jordan Romano pitched the 9th for his 24th save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 2 Giants 1

My Take:

  • Chris Bassitt fired six shutout innings scattering three hits while walking three and striking out twelve (a career high). He did get himself into some jams, but was able to execute pitches to get out of innings. He should get some consideration to pitch in the all star game
  • The bullpen gave up a run on two hits while striking out 2 over the last three innings.  Jordan Romano showed a bit of rust having not pitched in a while.  The Giants had the tying run at the plate a couple of times in the 9th, but Alejandro Kirk threw out Sabol, who was trying to steal 3rd base and Romano got Brandon Crawford to fly out to center field to end the game.  Erik Swanson and Tim Mayza both threw perfect innings in the 7th and 8th respectively l.
  • Vlad provided the only offense the Blue Jays needed, and ultimately got, with a mammoth home run in the 6th inning. He is entering the gone run derby this year so hopefully that sparks a huge second half because Vlad is having an off-year, by his standards at least.
  • I want to address the two ejections. The Giants manager Gabe Kapler and Giants third baseman JD Davis were both rejected at the end of the top of the 3rd for arguing balls and strikes.  Davis and Kapler were upset because Alejandro Kirk dramatically pulled his glove up to bring what should have been a ball into the  strike zone. As long as humans are calling balls and strikes, the catchers will be able to frame pitches. Roboumps may eliminate the ability of catchers to frame pitches. I do not believe managers skilful be able to challenge balls and strikes as they are able to do with virtually every other play.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays will go for three straight wins and their first of the season against division rivals Boston Red Sox. The Blue jays suffered a 4-game sweep in Boston two months ago with the Red Sox outscoring the Blue Jays 32-19. Jose Berrios starts against Red Sox lefty James Paxton, who no hit the Blue Jays May 18, 2018. You can bet he'll be fired up to pitch in Canada on the Canada day long weekend.

Game #81- San Francisco Giants (45-35) @ Toronto Blue Jays (44-37) - game recap

Trevor Richards struck out his 500th career batter in a 6-1 win over the Giants

After a shutout loss to the Giants last night that wasted a strong start by Kevin Gausman,  who struck out his 1500th career batter, the Blue Jays were looking to even the series.  Trevor Richards got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate.  The rest of the lineup was the same as yesterday,. Could the Blue Jays even the series?  Here is tonight's game recap

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Bo Bichette singled scoring George Springer
  • A batter later,  Brandon Belt doubled home Bichette
  • Three batters later,  Daulton Varsho doubled scoring Belt
  • A batter later,  Whit Merrifield doubled home Varsho
  • A batter after that,  Danny Jansen singled scoring Merrifield
  • Trevor Richards pitching line: 3IP 1H 0R 1BB 5K 40 pitches (28 for strikes)
  • The Giants got one back in the top of the 5th as Austin Slater hammered a solo bomb to dead center
  • Logan Webb pitching line: 5IP 8H 5R (all earned) 0BB 5K 92 pitches. (62 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 7th as Springer singled scoring Cavan Biggio
  • Final score: Blue Jays 6 Giants 1

My Take:

  • Trevor Richards did his job, firing three shutout innings,  allowing a hit and a walk and striking out 5. Richards got his 500th career strikeouts. For a reliever,  that's a pretty good number of strikeouts.
  • The rest of the bullpen did a solid job,  giving up a run on 5 hits while walking none and striking out 4 over the last 6 innings, Yimi Garcia had his best outing of the seam, pitching a perfect 9th,  striking out 1 on an efficient 12 pitches.  Bowden Francis gave the Blue Jays 4 innings, although he'll want the pitch to Austin Slater,  who took him yard to deep center, back.
  • Offensively,  the Blue Jays jumped all over Giants starter Logan Webb, scoring 5 runs on 6 hits in the 1st inning. They added an insurance run in the 8th off ex-Blue Jays pitcher Ross Stripling
  • Every Blue Jays starter had at least one hit and all but Vladimir Guerrero Jr,,  Matt Chapman and Danny Jansen scored a run
  • The Blue Jays were 6-13 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays go for their 2nd straight win and 16th series win of the season.  Chris Bassitt starts for the Blue Jays.  The Giants have not named a starter for tomorrow's series finale.

Game #80- San Francisco Giants (45-34) @ Toronto Blue Jays (43-37) - game recap

Kevin Gausman threw 6 solid innings striking out 12. including his 1500th career strikeout, in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Giants

After an off-day yesterday, the Blue Jays continued the homestand with a three game set that began tonight against the Giants. In 2019, the Giants won the season series 3-1 and outscored the Blue Jays 18-16. Kevin Gausman got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate. George Springer was back in the field after DH'ing Sunday. Daulton Varsho got the start in CF. Cavan Biggio was at 2B and Brandon Belt served as DH. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 3 games? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • Ryan Walker pitching line: 1IP 2H 0R 0BB 3K 24 pitches (17 for strikes)
  • The Giants opened the scoring in the top of the 5th as Patrick Bailey doubled scoring Thairo Estrada
  • Kevin Gausman pitching line: 6IP 3H 1R (earned) 1BB 12K 106 pitches (69 for strikes)
  • The Giants added a pair of runs in the top of the 9th as Estrada doubled scoring Joc Pederson and JD Davis
  • Camilo Doval got the last 4 outs for his 23rd save of the season
  • Final score: Giants 3 Blue Jays 0

My Take:

  • Kevin Gausman fired 6 strong innings, giving up a run on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 12. He hit the 1500 strikeout milestone with his 7th K of the game in the top of the 4th. Gausman is now tied with ex-Blue Jays pitcher Robbie Ray for 229th all-time with 1505 strikeouts. Nolan Ryan has the all-time record for strikeouts with 5714 strikeouts. It is doubtful anyone will catch Ryan with the pitch counts generally limiting pitchers to about 90-100 pitches, whereas in Ryan's era pitchers generally pitched until their arms fell off.
  • The bullpen gave up a pair of runs on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1. Erik Swanson gave up both runs to put the game out of reach.
  • The Blue Jays were 0-12 with runners in scoring position.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to even the series. Giants righty Logan Webb starts for the Giants. The Blue Jays have not named a start for tomorrow night, although it'll likely be a bullpen day with Trevor Richards getting the ball first.

Game #79- Oakland A's (20-60) @ Toronto Blue Jays (43-26) - game recap

Yusei Kikuchi threw 7 strong innings in a 12-1 rout over the A's

After doubling upon the A's yesterday thanks to a pair of 2-run jacks from Vlad and Danny Jansen,  the Blue Jays were going for two straight wins and Gerrit 15th series win of the seam.  Yusei Kikuchi got the start with Tyler Heineman behind the plate. George Springer got the half day off as DH with Cavan Biggio in RF. Kevin Kiermaier was in CF.  Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to two games and notch their 15th series win of the seam?  Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as George Springer led off with a solo blast to left-center
  • Three batters later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. single scoring Whit Merrifield
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 2nd on a double play ball hit by Springer that scored Santiago Espinal
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 3rd on a wild pitch by Luis Medina that scored Matt Chapman
  • The A's got one back in the top of the 6th as Tony Kemp smacked a solo blast to right
  • Luis Medina pitching line: 5IP 4H 4R (3 earned) 7BB 4K 90 pitches (47 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom half of the inning on a sac fly by Springer that scored Kevin Kiermaier
  • The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the bottm of the 7th on a ground rule double by Espinal that scored Bo Bichette and Guerrero Jr.
  • Yusei Kikuchi pitching line: 7IP 2H 1R (earned) 2BB 8K 101 pitches (63 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 8th as Bichette singled scoring Danny Jansen
  • A batter later, Springer scored on a fielder's choice hit by Guerrero Jr.
  • Two batters later, Biggio drilled a 3-run bomb off the basing of the second deck; also scoring Guerrero Jr. and Chapman
  • Final score: Blue Jays 12 A's 1

My Take:

  • Yusei Kikuchi fired 7 strong innings, giving up a run on 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8. He retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced and six of the last 8. Kikuchi has been one of the better 5th starters the Blue Jays have had in recent years and is starting to prove he is worth the contract he signed 2 years ago.
  • The bullpen gave up a hit and a wallk while striking out 1 over the last 2 innings
  • The bats were on big time today, with the Blue Jays scoring in 6 og 8 possible innings. George Springer started things off with a bang and a leadoff HR (he scored twice and drove in 2 runs), Vlad scored twice and drove in a run, Cavan Biggio capped off the scoring with a mammoth 3-run jack
  • Every Blue Jays starter reached base at least once and all but Whit Merrifield and Matt Chapman had at least one hit
  • Up next, after an off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays continue the home stand with a three game set against the San Francisco Giants. In 2019, the Giants won the season series 3-1 and outscored the Blue Jays 18-16. Neither team has set their rotation for the series.

Game #78- Oakland A's (20-59) @ Toronto Blue Jays (42-36) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a 2-run HR in a 6-3 come-from behind win over the A's

After dropping yesterday's series opener against the A's, the Blue Jays were looking to even the weekend set.  Adam Cimber was placed on the 10 game IL with Bowden Francis getting the recall from AAA- ball. Jose Berrios got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate.  Daulton Varsho was in CF and Whit Merrifield was in LF.  Santiago Espinal got the start at 2B. Could the Blue Jays even the weekend series against the A's? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on a sac fly by Brandon Belt that scored George Springer
  • Two batters later, Matt Chapman singled scoring Bo Bichette
  • Shintaro Fujinami pitching line: 0.2IP 4H 2R (both earned) 0BB 0K 22 pitches (13 for strikes)
  • The A's got one back in the top of the 2nd a Seth Brown hammered a solo bomb to dead center
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom half of the inning as Santiago Espinal was forced in when Vladimir Guerrero Jr was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded
  • The A's got one back in the top of the 3rd as Ryan Noda double scoring Tony Kemp.  Noda was thrown out at third base on the play trying to stretch a double into a triple
  • The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as Danny Jansen belted a 2-run blast to left-center; also scoring Daulton Varsho
  • The A's got one back in the top of the 6th as Tyler Wade singled scoring Jace Pederson
  • The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as Guerrero Jr smashed a 2-run jack to straightaway center; also scoring Belt
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 6IP 6H 3R (2 earned) 2BB 8K 96 pitches (63 for strikes)
  • Jordan Romano got the last out for his 23rd save of the season
  • Final score Blue Jays 6 A's 3

My Tak

  • Jose Berrios battled through 6 innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 his while walking 2 and striking out 8. He had 1-2-3 innings in the 1st and the 4th. Loved his reaction of the swinging strikeout he got to end the 6th inning against what would be the final batter he faced today
  • The bullpen gave up 2 hits while striking out two over the last three innings. Yimi Garcia gave up the two hits in the 9th and forced the Blue Jays to use Jordan Romano with the tying run at the plate. The Blue Jays really need to DFA Garcia,  who has not shown he can be effective as a reliever in any situation.
  • Don't look now but Vladdy's bat is heating up.  He went yard for the second straight game and took one for the team when he was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
  • Unlike yesterday's loss, the bats responded in every inning the A's scored
  • Up next, the Blue Jays go for their second straight win and 15th series win of the season.  Yusei Kikuchi starts against A's righty Luis Medina

Game #78 Oakland Athletics (20-58) @ Toronto Blue Jays (41-36)

Game #77- Oakland A's (20-58) @ Toronto Blue Jays (41-36) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a 3-run HR. his first HR at the Roger's Centre, in a losing effort as the A's came from behind to defest the Blue Jays 5-4

After an off-day yesterday, the Blue Jays returned home to begin a 10-day, 9-game homestand that began tonight against the Oakland A's (soon to be playing out of :Las Vegas). Last season, the Blue Jays and A's split the season series, with the A's outscoring the Blue Jays 22-19. Chris Bassitt got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate.  Daulton Varsho was in LF.  Whit Merrifield got the start at 2B. Bo Bichette was back in the lineup and at SS after missing last game with a sore thumb.  Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to three games? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The A's opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as JJ Bleday annihilated a 2-run bomb to the second deck in right; also scoring Tony Kemp
  • Four batters later, Shea Langeliers singled scoring Aledmys Diaz
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 3rd as Kevin Kiermaier doubled home Danny Jansen
  • Four batters later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drilled a 3-run bomb to the second deck in left-center; also scoring Kiermaier and Bo Bichette
  • The A's tied the game in the top of the 5th on a sac coy by Bleday that scored Conner Capel
  • Chris Bassitt pitching line: 5IP 5H 4R (all earned) 2BB 4K 83 pitches (53 for strikes)
  • James Kaprielian pitching line: 6IP 6H 4R (all earned) 1BB 8K 95 pitches (67 for strikes
  • The A's took the lead in the top of the 9th as Langeliers bashed a solo blast to left
  • Trevor May pitched a scoreless 9th for his 4th save of the season
  • Final score A's 5 Blue Jays 4

My Take:

  • Not the start to the game Chris Bassitt would have wanted.  The Blue Jays righty gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk in the first inning. He did retire 9 of the next ten batters after that right inning.  Unfortunate he gave up the tying run in his 5th and final inning
  • The bullpen gave up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out four over the last four innings.  Jordan Romano gave up the run and was charged with the loss.  Erik Swanson struck out the side in his inning of work
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. FINALLY hit his first home run at Roger's center. The likely starting first baseman at the upcoming all star game,  was tied for the lowest home run total of his career (9, which he hit in the pandemic shortened 2020 season). He's certainly had his share of bad luck with fielders making great plays. All the same,  the Blue Jays need his hat to be productive if they are going to hold off the Yankees,  Astros,  Angels, Red Sox and Mariners for a wild card spot.
  • The Blue Jays were 2-8 with runners in scoring position,  including three chances to tie the game after a leadoff double in the bottom of the 9th.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to even the weekend series against the A's. Jose Berrios starts against A's lefty Hogan Harris

Game #76- Toronto Blue Jays (41-35) @ Miami Marlins (42-33) - game recap

Kevin Gausman threw 6 solid innings in a 6-3 win over the Marlins

After edging the Marlins last night thanks to a pair of clutch 8th inning base hits, the Blue Jays were looking for their 2nd straight win, 14th series win of the season and 6th season series win of the season. Brandon Belt was reinstated from the 10- day IL and served as DH today.  Spencer Horwitz was optioned back to AAA-ball. Bo Bichette was scratched from the lineup late with a sore right thumb (Santiago Espinal took his spot at SS). Kevin Gausman got the start with Tyler Heineman behind the plate. Whit Merrifield was in LF and Cavan Biggio was at 2B. could the Blue Jays make it two straight wins, 14 series wins and 6 season series wins? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd as Cavan Biggio doubled scoring Matt Chapman
  • Two batters later, Kevin Kiermaier singled scoring Biggio
  • Two batters later, George Springer singles scoring Santiago Espinal and Kiermaier
  • A batter later, Whit Merrifield singled home Springer
  • The Marlins got a pair back in the bottom of the 4th as Garrett Cooper doubled scoring Bryan De La Cruz and Jesus Sanchez
  • The Marlins got one back in the bottom of the 7th as Garrett Hampson singled home Jonathan Davis
  • Kevin Gausman pitching line: 6IP 8H 3R (all earned) 1BB 6K 100 pitches (72 for strikes)
  • Sandy Alcantara pitching line: 7IP 10H 5R (all earned) 2BB 6K 96 pitches (67 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 8th as Chapman smashed a solo blast to left
  • Jordan Romano pitched a scoreless 9th for his 22nd save of the season
  • Final score Blue Jays 6 Marlins 3

My Take:

  • With the bullpen running on fumes, Kevin Gausman pitched into the 7th inning,  giving up 3 runs on 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6. Since Alek Manoah was sent back to the Florida development league two weeks ago, the Blue Jays have effectively been going with a 4-man rotation and a bullpen day every 5th day. Unfortunately, Chris Bassitt has had a couple of rough starts lately and Jose Berrios had a klunker a couple of days ago. Luckily Gausman, who has been the most reliable and consistent starter this season,  was able to give the Blue Jays 18 outs today.
  • The bullpen gave up a hit and a walk over the last three innings. Erik Swanson and Trevor Richards were perfect in their inning of work
  • Offensively, the Blue Jays had a big inning where they scored 5 runs on 6 hits. Matt Chapman provided a late insurance run when he went yard in the 8th.
  • The Blue Jays were 5-10 with runners in scoring position.
  • Up next, after an off day tomorrow, the Blue Jays begin a 9- game, 10- day home stand that starts Friday against the Oakland A's.  The Blue Jays and A's split the season series last year with the A's outscoring the Blue Jays 22-19. The Blue Jays have not set their rotation for the series, James Kaprielian will start for the A's Friday night.

Game #74- Toronto Blue Jays (39-35) @ Miami Marlins (42-31) - game recap

Bo Bichette had a pair of hits in an 11-0 shutout loss to the Marlins

After brutally blowing a 6-run lead for a father's day loss, the Blue Jays flew to Miami to begin a three game set that began tonight. They were looking to snap a 2-game skid. In 2021, the Blue Jays swept the 4 game season series, outscoring the Marlins 16-8. Alejandro Kirk was placed on the 10 day IL with a left hand laceration.  Bowden Francis was optioned to AAA-ball. Tyler Heineman and Trent Thornton were recalled from AAA- ball Jose Berrios got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate. Matt Chapman was back in the lineup and at the hot corner after the full day off yesterday.  Cavan Biggio got the start at 2B. Could the Blue Jays snap the two game skid? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Marlins opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd as Jorge Soler bashed a 2- run blast to left-center; also scoring Luis Arraez
  • The batters later, Garrett Cooper singled scoring Jesus Sanchez
  • The Marlins added a run in the bottom of the 4th on a sac fly by Soler that scored Jacob Stallings
  • Two batters later,  Jonathan Davis skid on a groundout hit by Sanchez
  • Bryan Hoeing pitching line: 4IP 3H 0R 0BB 5K 54 pitches (36 for strikes)
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 4IP 8H 5R (all earned) 1BB 4K 100 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • The Marlins added a run in the bottom of the 7th as Joey Wendle singled scoring Sanchez
  • A batter later,  Jon Berti singled home Cooper
  • Two batters later,  Arreaz singled scoring Wendle and Berti
  • Two batters later,  Bryan De La Cruz singled home Stallings
  • The Marlins added a run in the bottom of the 8th as Jacob Amaya singled scoring Garrett Hampson
  • Final score: Marlins 11 Blue Jays 0

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios was roughed up for 5 runs on 8 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4 over 4 innings.  His counterpart,  Bryan Hoeing pitched the same number of innings throwing half the pitches. Berrios is an inconsistent pitcher who can look like an all star one start and look like he belongs in the minors the next start.  Tonight,  it seems like Berrios got in a jam but really didn't have a pitch working to get out of the jam. He was very inefficient with his pitches,  hitting 100 pitches in just 4 innings.  The Blue Jays need pitchers to pitch deeper into games,  otherwise an already overworked bullpen won't be that effective or you'll see relievers getting hurt because they are being used too much
  • The bullpen wasn't much better tonight, giving up a further 6 runs on 11 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4. To be fair, one of those runs came against position player Ernie Clement. Five of the runs were charged to nate Pearson,  who managed to get just one out while giving up 4 hits and a walk. Mitch White came in and gave up two hits for three of the runs charged to Pearson.  Trent Thornton, making his season debut,  gave up 2 hits over 2 innings and was easily the most effective of the relievers tonight
  • Offensively,  Bo Bichette was the only one with multiple hits on the night. George Springer, Daulton Varsho, Spencer Horwitz, Danny Jansen and Kevin Kiermaier each had one hit
  • The Blue Jays were 0-6 with runners in scoring position
  • This has to be the worst effort of the season.  It's pretty hard to do much worse than a shutout blowout loss
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to snap the three game skid.  Yusei Kikuchi starts against Marlins righty Eury Perez

Game #73- Toronto Blue Jays (39-34) @ Texas Rangers (44-27) - game recap

Whit Merrifie;d drove in a pair and scored a run in a losing effort as the Rangrs came from behind to knock off the Blue Jay 11-7

First  of all,  happy father's day to our male members. After dropping the second game of the weekend set on a bullpen day, the Blue Jays were trying to escape Texas with their 14th series win of the season. Chris Bassitt was on the bump trying to avenge his worst start in a Blue Jays uniform with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. Matt Chapman got the full day off with Santiago Espinal at the hot corner. Spencer Horwitz made his big league debut serving as DH. Could the Blue Jays escape Texas with a win and their 14th series win? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the first on a sac fly by Daulton Varsho that scored George Springer
  • Alejandro Kirk had to leave the game after being hit in the hand by a Jon Gray fastball
  • The Blue Jays added a pair of rings in the top of the 2nd as Whit Merrifield singled scoring Santiago Espinal and Spencer Horwitz
  • A batter later, Bo Bichette doubled home Springer and Merrifield
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 3rd on a ground out hit by Horwitz that scored Varsho
  • Jon Gray pitching line: 2.1IP 6H 6R (all earned) 3BB 2K 56 pitches (34 for strikes)
  • The Rangers got a pair back in the bottom half of the inning as Josh Jung singled scoring Nathaniel Lowe and Adolis Garcia.  Kevin Kiermaier was charged with a throwing error on the play
  • The Rangers got a pair back in the bottom of the 4th as Corey Seagar doubled scoring Ezequiel Duran and Leody Taveras
  • Two batters later, Garcia singled home Seagar
  • Chris Bassitt pitching line: 3.2IP 7H 5R (3 earned) 3BB 2K 73 pitches (46 for strikes)
  • The Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the 5th as Jonah Heim bashed a solo jack to right
  • Three batters later, Taveras singled scoring Mitch Garver
  • A batter later,  Duran scored on a sac fly by Marcus Semien
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 6th as Springer singled scoring Kiermaier
  • The Rangers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th as Taveras whacked a 2- run jack to right-center and into the Rangers bullpen; also scoring Duran
  • Two batters later, Seagar singled scoring Semien
  • Final score: Rangers 11 Blue Jays 7

My Take:

  • It was another rough start for Chris Bassitt,  who gave up five runs (three earned thanks to a throwing error by Kevin Kiermaier) on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.  To be fair, Bassitt had to pitch to two different catchers after Alejandro Kirk had to leave the game after getting hit by a pitch at the start of the second inning.  He was also victimized by sloppy defense (an uncharacteristic throwing error by Kiermaier and a bloop single that dropped between three fielders). Nonetheless,  Bassitt did not have his best stuff today and will no doubt be searching for answers between starts this week.
  • The bullpen wasn't much better,  giving up a further six runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out four.  Nate Pearson and Adam Cimber were both taken deep.  Yimi Garcia was the only pitcher not to allow a baserunner.
  • Offensively, the Blue Jays jumped out to a 6-0 lead after their 3rd turn at the plate thanks to clutch hits from Whit Merrifield and Bo Bichette, as well as a sac fly by Daulton Varsho and RBI groundout by Spencer Horwitz. The blue jays had little response after the Rangers came back to take the lead over the next three innings.  They would get one back in the 6th inning but just three base runners after that inning
  • Here's hoping Alejandro Kirk doesn't miss too much time since they don't have a viable third catcher they trust.  When Danny Jansen went down with a groin strain,  Tyler Heineman was recalled and played five games. In most of those games Kirk went back behind the plate. The fact that there is no fracture means Kirk won't need to miss several weeks.  I can see him missing the first two games of the series that starts tomorrow in Miami, and perhaps Heineman is recalled as insurance in case he is needed for Wednesdays matinee.
  • Spencer Horwitz had a strong start to his big league career,  getting his first major league hit in his first big league AB on a sharp single.  He would later score his his career run that inning.  In his next AB, Horwitz got his first career RBI, on a groundout.  He later drew his first career walk and struck out twice.  Horwitz has earned another start.
  • Up next,  the Blue Jays head to Miami to finish off the road trip and stretch of 13 games in 13 days. In 2021, the Blue Jays swept the 4 game season series, outscoring the Marlins 16-8. Jose Berrios starts against Marlins righty Bryan Hoeing.q

Game #72- Toronto Blue Jays (39-33) @ Texas Rangers (43-27) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a pair of hits and drove in a run in a losing effort as the Rangers came from behind to double up the Blue Jays 4-2

After narrowly defeating the Rangers on the back of a 2-run blast from Danny Jansen, the Blue Jays were going for their second straight win and 14th series win of the season. Trevor Richards got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate. Kevin Kiermaier was in CF and Daulton Varsho was in LF. Whit Merrifield got the start at 2B. Vlad got the half day off as DH with Cavan Biggio at 1B. Could the Blue Jays make it two straight wins and notch their 14th series win of the season? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Vladimir Guerrero Jr singled scoring Bo Bichette
  • The Rangers took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd as Josh Jung hammered a 2-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Adolis Garcia
  • A batter later, Jonah Heim belted a solo jack to right-center
  • The blue jays hot one back in the top of the 4th as Daulton Varsho smashed a solo blast to right-center
  • Trevor Richards pitching line: 3IP 3H 3R (all earned) 1BB 2K 65 pitches (36 for strikes)
  • Dane Dunning pitching line: 6IP 6H 2R (both earned) 1BB 3K 89 pitches (61 for strikes)
  • The Rangers added a run in the bottom of the 7th as Corey Seagar drilled a solo bomb to dead center
  • Will Smith pitched a scoreless 9th for his 12th save of the season
  • Final score: Rangers 4 Blue Jays 2

My Take:

  • Trevor Richards was not quite as effective today as his last outing in an opener role.  Like a week ago,  Richards pitched three innings.  Only this time,  the Rangers took him deep for three runs in the second inning.  Richards threw 65 pitches - about 15 more than last time.  The Blue Jays could opt to continue to build Richards up as a traditional starter since Manoah will not be back in the majors for a while and three is no certainty on Ryu and if he can handle being a starting pitcher coming out Tommy John surgery.  He started his career as a starting pitcher, but was mostly awful in that role
  • The rest of the bullpen had mixed results.  Yimi Garcia continues to have a subpar season. The Rangers took him deep in the 7th inning and got three more hits off him.  Adam Cimber, in his first appearance coming off the paternity list,  was excellent,  recording five outs and striking out one. Bowen Francis threw 2.2 scoreless innings,  walking three, striking out 2 and also giving up a base hit.
  • Offensively,  Vlad opened the scoring with an RBI single,  but later was gunned down at home to end the inning.  Daulton Varsho went yard in the 4th to get the Blue Jays within a run.  They tried to rally in the 9th, but Danny Jansen lined out to center and Santiago Espinal struck out swinging to end the game.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to notch their 14th series win of tee season. Chris Bassitt starts against Rangers righty Jon Gray

Game #70- Toronto Blue Jays (38-31) @ Baltimore Orioles (43-25) - game recap

Danny Jansen hit a pair of solo HR in a losing effort as the Orioles came from behind to defeat the Blue Jays 4-2

After a solid shutout win over the  Orioles, thanks to 7.2 excellent shutout innings from Jose Berrios, the Blue Jays were going for their 2nd straight win and 14th series win of the season. Yusei Kikuchi got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. George Springer got the half day off as DH with Cavan Biggio in RF. The rest of the lineup was the same as yesterday. Could the Blue Jays notch their 14th series win and extend the win streak to 2 games? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Orioles opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Gunnar Henderson singled scoring Anthony Santander
  • The Blue Jays tied it up in the top of the 3rd as Danny Jansen hammered a solo bomb to left\
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 5th as Jansen belted a solo blast to left-center
  • The Orioles tied it up in the bottom half of the inning as Adley Rutschmann bashed a solo jack to left
  • Yusei Kikuchi pitching line: 4.2IP 6H 2R (both earned) 2BB 7K 94 pitches (62 for strikes)
  • The Orioles took the lead in the bottom of the 6th as Santander singled scoring Austin Hays
  • Tyler Wells pitching line: 6.2IP 5H 2R (both earned) 1BB 8K 90 pitches (65 for strikes)
  • The Orioles added a run in the bottom of the 8th as Hays belted a solo jack to left-center
  • Felix Bautista got the last 4 outs for his 18th save of the season
  • Final score: Orioles 4 Blue Jays 2

My Take:

  • Yusei Kikuchi battled through 4.2 innings, giving up a pair runs on 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 7. He had to deal with base runners in every inning, but was able to escape most of the jams. There's no question Kikuchi is having a better season than 2022, despite some so-so-starts of late
  • The bullpen gave up 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 over the final 3.1 innings. Yimi Garcia continues to have a very rough year. He was responsible for the game winning run and the Orioles also got 4 hits off him.
  • Danny Jansen provided the offense with a pair of solo HR. Vlad was the only only Blue Jay with multiple hits (Bo Bichette, Daulton Varsho and Whit Merrifield each had a hit)
  • The Blue Jays were 0-6 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays head to Texas ro begin a weekend set against the Rangers. The Blue Jays won the season series last year 4-2, but the Rangers outscored the the Blue Jays 37-36. Kevin Gausman starts against Rangers lefty Martin Perez

Game #69- Toronto Blue Jays (38-31) @ Baltimore Orioles (42-25) - game recap

Jose Berrios threw 7.2 shutout innings in a 3-0 shutout win over the Orioles

After a blowout loss yesterday, the Blue Jays were looking to even the series and earn their first win of the season against the suddenly relevant Orioles (hard to believe that less than 2 years ago, the Blue Jays won 14 of 19 against the Orioles and outscored the Orioles 153-84). Jose Berrios got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Vlad got the half day off as DH with Cavan Biggio at 1B. The rest of the lineup was the same as last night Could the Blue Jays even the series and get their 1st win of the season against the Orioles. Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 5th as George Springer drilled a solo blast to left-center
  • Kyle Bradish pitching line: 7IP 4H 1R (earned) 0BB 1K 98 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 8th on a ground-rule double by Whit Merrifield that scored Kevin Kiermaier
  • Three batters later, Bo Bichette singled scoring Springer
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 7.2IP 3H 0R 1BB 5K 90 pitches (62 for strikes)
  • Jordan Romano pitched a scoreless 9th for his 19th save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 3 Orioles 0

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios fired 7.2 shutout innings, scattering 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 5.  Berrios was perfect until he walked the second batter of the 5th inning. The Blue Jays needed a deep start with a bullpen day coming up Friday and a couple of short outings by Kevin Gausman and Chris Bassitt the past 2 starts
  • The bullpen gave up a pair of hits over the last 1.1 innings.
  • Offensively, the Blue Jays got a home run off the bat of George Springer and 2 clutch hits in the 8th inning to give Romano three-run cushion to work with
  • For the first time in four years, the Blue Jays had to pinch hit for the pitcher. Cavan Biggio, who was playing 1st base tonight was pulled for a pinch hitter in the 8th inning. Because Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Dh'ing tonight) was the only healthy 1st baseman, with Brandon Belt on the IL with a hamstring injury, Vlad had to play 1B for the rest of the game. When a DH subs defensively, the pitcher becomes a DH. The pitcher's spot came up in the 9th inning, so Danny Jansen had to pinch hit for Tim Mayza. It'll be a pretty rare occurence where you will see this situation with both leagues using the universal DH, which became permanent for the 2022 season after being a temporary measure for the 2020 and 2021 COVID-affected seasons
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to majke it two straight wins and their 14th series win of the season. Yusei Kikuchi starts against Orioles righty Tyler Wells

Ten random thoughts for an off-day Monday

It's been a while since I've posted a random thoughts post. Since the last post, the Blue Jays have had mixed results, compiling an 11-17 record in May, that included a rough stretch where they won just 2 of 15 against AL East opponents, including being swept in four games by the Red Sox at Fenway Park and swept by the Orioles at home. The Blue Jays had three game sweeps against the Pirates, Braves and Mets. They had started June on a winning stretch with 8 wins out of 11 games, including a huge come-from behind win yesterday. In this post, we will look at injuries, Alek Manoah and more. Here are ten random thoughts on an off-day Monday.
