Game #76- Tampa Bay Rays (40-35) @ Toronto Blue Jays (43-33) - game recap

Yusei Kikuchi threw six strong innings in a 4-1 win over the Rays

After dropping yesterday's game thanks to shaky bullpen efforts from David Phelps and Tim Mayza, the Blue Jays were looking to start the Canada Day long weekend with a win. They opened a rare 5-game series against the Rays thanks to a double header Saturday to make up one of the postponed games due to the lockout that delayed the start of this season by 2 weeks. The Rays took 2 of 3 in the Blue Jays house of horrors - Tropicana Field - and outscored the Blue Jays 9-7 May 13-15. Yusei Kikuchi got the start with Gabriel Moreno behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. Teo was back in RF after getting the full game off yesterday. Alejandro Kirk served as DH tonight. Could the Blue Jays start the Canada Day long weekend with a win? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game #74- Boston Red Sox (42-33) @ Toronto Blue Jays (42-32) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th as the Blue Jays came from behind to knock off the Red Sox 6-5

After a solid win last night on the back of 7 shutout innings by Kevin Gausman, the Blue Jays were looking for their 2nd straight win and 13th serie3s win of the season. Ross Stripling got the start with Gabriel Moreno behind the plate. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. George Springer got the half day off as DH with Raimel Tapia in CF. Could the Blue Jays make it two straight wins and notch their 13th series win of the season? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Teoscar Hernandez doubled scoring Bo Bichette
  • Two batters later, Matt Chapman doubled home Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Hernandez
  • The Red Sox got one back in the top of the 2nd as Trevor Story whacked a solo blast to left and into the Blue Jays bullpen.
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 3rd as Santiago Espinal singled scoring Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
  • The Red Sox got one back in the top of the 5th as Christian Vazquez scored on a groundout by Rob Refsnyder
  • Ross Stripling pitching line: 5IP 5H 2R (both earned) 3BB 2K 90 pitches (57 for strikes)
  • Michael Wacha pitching line: 5IP 5H 2R (both earned) 1BB 3K 81 pitches (56 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox tied the game in the top of the 6th as Refsnyder drilled a 2-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Christian Arroyo
  • The Red Sox took the lead in the top of the 7th as Vazquez singled home Xander Bogaerts
  • The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom of the 9th as Bichette singled scoring Bradley Zimmer
  • A batter later, Guerrero Jr. singled home George Springer
  • Final score: Blue Jays 6 Red Sox 5
My Take:

  • Ross Stripling battled through 5 innings, giving up a pair of runs on 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2. His only real mistake was hit out of the yard by Trevor Story. Richards threw enough good pitches to escape innings and limit the damage.
  • The bullpen nearly caused the Blue Jays to lose. Trent Thornton gave up a 2-run shot to dead center to take the win away from Stripling. The normally reliable Tim Mayza gave up a run on a couple of hits and a walk. More importantly, the Blue Jays were forced to use 5 relievers.
  • Everybody contributed to the offence today with every starter getting at least one hit. In fact, even Alejandro Kirk got a hit in his pinch hitting appearance.
  • The Blue Jays were 6-12 with runners in scoring position.
  • With the Rays losing today, the Blue Jays will either be 3rd in the AL East standings or 2nd in the AL East standings when they start the rare 5-game series against the Rays. Tomorrow's pitching matchup features Alek Manoah going up against Red Sox righty Nick Pivetta. Tomorrow's start by Manoah will likely determine who starts Thursday's game. Yusei Kikuchi is pencilled in at the moment, but may be either pushed back, skipped or relegated to the bullpen if Manoah can't pitch deep into tomorrow's game. The Blue Jays must manage their bullpen usage the next 2 days with a tough 4 games in 72 hour stretch Friday through Sunday's finale, and that includes a double header Saturday to make up one of the games postponed by the lockout.

After a solid win over the Brewers last night, the Blue Jays were looking for their 3rd straight win and 13th series win of the season. Zack Collins was recalled from AAA ball (and would presumably catch if something happened to Gabriel Moreno after Alejandro Kirk took the back swing of Jonathan Davis off his glove hand last night. Kirk was well enough to DH today). Infielder Otto Lopez was optioned to AAA-ball. Yusei Kikuchi got the start. Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. Game #70- Toronto Blue Jays (40-30) @ Milwaukee Brewers (40-33) - game recap

Alejandro Kirk was 4-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI in a 9-4 victory over the Brewers. Kirk had to leave the game in the 7th with a hand injury after getting whacked in the glove hand by the back swing of ex-teammate Jonathan Davis

After an off day yesterday, the Blue Jays began a stretch of 19 games in 19 days, which will include 5 games over the Canada Day long weekend due to a double header against the Rays to make up one of the postponed games due to the lockout that wiped out the first 2 weeks of games. They open the stretch of games this weekend with a 3 games against the Brewers. It will be old friend time as the Blue Jays face former teammates Jonathan Davis, who was recently recalled by the Brewers, and Rowdy Tellez. Davis was 2-4 in his recent season debut. Tellez is batting .251 with 10HR and 39RBI heading into Wednesday's games over 65 games. The last time these two squads faced each other was 2017 and the Blue Jays and Brewers split the 4 games with the Blue Jays outscoring the Brewers 15-13. Nate Pearson suffered a setback in his rehab from mono. He injured his lat in a recent rehab appearance and will miss an indefinite period of time. Yimi Garcia was placed on the IL with a back strain.  Righty Jeremy Beasley was called up to take his place in the bullpen. Alek Manoah got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Georrge Springer remains out with an injured elbow. Vlad got the half day off as DH with Cavan Biggio at 1B. Raimel Tapia was in CF. Could the Blue Jays make it two wins in a row? Game #69- Toronto Blue Jays (39-30) @ Chicago White Sox (33-34) - game recap

Bo Bichette hit a grand slam in a 9-5 victory over the White Sox. Today's win secures the season series win for the Blue Jays even though the White Sox took two of three from the Blue Jays this week because the Blue Jays swept the White Sox in Toronto May 30-June 1

After being Edged by the White Sox after multiple blow saves by normally steady relievers, the Blue Jays were looking to avoid a series sweep. Ross Stripling got the start with Gabriel Moreno behind the plate. George Springer got the full day off with Raimel Tapia in CF. Alejandro Kirk served as DH. Could the Blue Jays avoid the sweep and clinch the season series win? Here is today's game recap.

Game #68 Toronto Blue Jays (38-29) @ Chicago White Sox (32-33)

Game #67- Toronto Blue Jays (38-29) @ Chicago White Sox (32-33) - game recap

Teoscar Hernandez drove in a pair and scored twice in an 8-7 loss to the White Sox

After a huge come from behind win over the Bronx Bombers yesterday, the Blue Jays hit the road for a week, starting tonight in the South side of Chicago against the White Sox, who the Blue Jays swept in Toronto May 31-June second, outscoring the south siders 21-11. A win tonight would also give the Blue Jays the season series win over the White Sox. Ace Jose Berrios got the start with Gabriel Moreno behind the plate. Teo was back in the field after DH'ing yesteday, Vlad got the half day off as DH today with Cavan Biggio at 1B. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had the full day off with Raimel Tapia in LF. Could the Blue Jays make it two wins in a row and 4 straight against the White Sox? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The White Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Andrew Vaughn doubled scoring Tim Anderson
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 2nd as Raimel Tapia whacked a 2-run blast to left and into the White Sox bullpen; also scoring Teoscar Hernandez
  • The White Sox retook the lead in the bttom half of the inning as Josh Harrison belted a 2-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Jake Burger
  • The White Sox added a run in the botttom of the 3rd as Luis Roberts smacked a 2-run blast to left; also scoring Vaughn
  • The White Sox added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Vaughn drilled a solo bomb to dead center
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 5IP 9H 6R (all earned) 1BB 1K 72 pitches (51 for strikes)
  • The White Sox added a run in the bottom of the 5th on a ground out by Reese McGuire that scored Jose Abreu
  • A batter later, Adam Engel singled home AJ Pollock
  • The Blue Jays got a pair back in the top of the 6th as Hernandez doubled scoring Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • Two batters later, Hernandez scored on a ground out by Santiago Espinal
  • Lamce Lynn pitching line: 5IP 4H 5R (3 earned) 2BB 5K 99 pitches (60 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got a pair back in the top of the 9th as Cavan Biggio bashed a 2-run blast to right; also scoring Gabriel Moreno
  • Joe Kelly pitched the 9th for his 1st save of the season
  • Final score: White Sox 8 Blue Jays 7
My Take:

  • Jose Berrios battled through 4 innings, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1. The big problem for Berrios tonight was that he was not missing bats. The White Sox took him yard 3 times for 5 runs. Andrew Vaughn proved to be the biggest thorn in Berrios' side, driving in a trio of runs and scoring twice.
  • The White Sox added two more runs against David Phelps, which proved to be the difference in the game. After allowing the White Sox two more hits in the 6th inning, Trent Thornton and Matt Gage combine to retire the last 7 Chicago batters in order
  • The Blue Jays faced an all-too familiar situation. Yesterday, the Blue Jays were down five runs after 5 innings yesterday, before mounting a huge comeback in front of a boisterous father's day crowd at the Roger's Centre 24 hrs ago. Tonight, they found themselves down 6 runs after five innings. Alas, the comeback would fall a run short on this night. Teo doubled home a pair in the 6th and scored himself a couple of batters later. Cavan Biggio hit a 2-run jack in the 9th inning to bring the Blue Jays within a run with 2 outs to play with. Unfortunately, the next 2 batters, George Springer and Bo Bichette. would both ground out to White Sox 2B Josh Harrison to end the game. With the Yankees winning in TB, The Blue Jays are back to being 12 games behind NY for the AL East title.
  • Every Blue Jays batter except Santiago Espinal and Matt Chapman reached base at least once
  • The Blue Jays were 1-8 with runners in scoring position.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to even the series. Kevin Gausman starts against White Sox righty Dylan Cease

Gabriel Moreno was 3-4 with 2 RBI in a 6-5 loss to the Orioles

After a 10-1shellacking against the Orioles yesterday with a strong team-wide effort from the offence and 6 shutout innings from Alek Manoah, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the winning streak to 3 games. Bad New came today, Hyun-Jin Ryu will undergo elbow surgery, either a partial revision or full TJ surgery. It will be the second surgery on his pitching elbow for Ryu, who underwent debridement surgery in September 2016. His 2022 season is now over after 6 subpar starts, 2 of which he left early due to the pain in his forearm/elbow. Ryu never threw more than 78 pitches in a start this season and threw over 5 innings just once. Here's hoping he can get healthy and regain his 2020 form when he finished 3rd in AL Cy Young voting. Ross Stripling likely remains in the rotation for the remainder of the season, barring a trade later in the season.  Julian Merryweather was placed on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain. • Final score: Blue Jays 10 Tigers 1

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios threw 8 strong innings, giving up a run on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1. Berrios had to endure a brief rain delay that started in the middle of an at-bat, which he finished with a strikeout. He retired the first 11 Tigers before Miguel Cabrera singled to break up the perfect game/no-hitter. Berrios' toughest inning was his last where he threw almost 30 pitches and two Tifers reached base in the same inning for the only time.
  • Jeremy Beasley retired the side in order to finish the game.
  • The bats continue to rake in June  After putting up 21 runs in Minny this week, the Blue Jays put up 10 runs tonight. George Springer finished a triple shy of the cycle Santigo Espinal, Lourdes Gurriel Jr, Alejandro Kirk, Bo and Vlad all had multi-hit nights

Game #51- Minnesota Twins (31-23) @ Toronto Blue Jays (30-21) - game recap

Cavan Biggio drew a pair of walks in a 9-3 loss to the Twins

After clinching their 8th straight win and second straight series sweep, the Blue Jays were going for their 9th straight W. They welcomed the AL Central-leading Twins, who played a pivotal role in the blue Jays missing the playoffs by a single game last season. Minnesota was a bottom-feeder team in 2021, but won 4 of 7 games against the Blue Jays despite the Blue Jays outscoring the Twins 28-25. This series will be a good test for the Blue Jays. Yusei Kikuchi got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. George Springer was back in the lineup after missing a couple of days with a non-COVID illness. Matt Chapman got the complete day off after getting hit by a pitch late yesterday. Santiago Espinal took his spot at the hot corner. Cavan Biggio was at 2B. Lourdes was back in LF after the complete day off yesterday. Raimel Tapia, who drilled a foul ball into his knee, was in RF for Teo, who got the half day off as DH. Could the Blue Jays keep things rolling with their 9th straight win? Here is tonight's game recap.
