After a huge comeback win yesterday capped off by an Alejandro Kirk RBI singled and aided by 7 strong innings from Jose Soriano, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 3 games, notch their 9th season series win and complete their second series sweep of the season. Max Scherzer got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Myles Straw was in LF, Brett Bateman was in CF and Nathan Lukes was in RF. My Take:

• Max Scherzer threw 7 shutout innings, giving up a hit, walking one and striking out 10, moving him past Gaylord Perry for 9th most career strikeouts in MLB history. For all the naysayers thinking Scherzer should hang them up, he still has a few bullets left in the legendary arm. This might have been Scherzer's best start in a Blue Jays uniform. He seems extremely motivated with the Blue Jays very much controlling their own destiny to snag the 3rd WC spot with series left against most of the teams they are battling for that one playoff spot. September is going to be a blast.
• The bullpen walked a batter and struck out 5 over the last 2 innings. Brayden Fisher retired every batter he faced.
• The offense today was led by Alejandro Kirk (2-run HR), Kazuma Okamoto (solo HR), Brett Bateman (RBI, run scored) and Andres Gimenez (2 RBI). It's nice to see the offense being spread around with better AB's lately. Vlad has 9 home games left to hit a HR at the Rogers Center
• Both teams were 0-1 on ABS challenges
• The Blue Jays were 4-10 with runners in scoring position.

• The Mariners opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd as Cal Raleigh whacked a solo blast to right
• The Mariners added a pair of runs in the top of the 4th as Taylor Ward singled scoring Josh Naylor and Raleigh
• The Blue Jays got a pair back in the bottom of the 5th on a bases loaded walk to George Springer that forced in Myles Straw. Brett Bateman also scored on the play because ball 4 was a wild pitch by Eduard Bazardo that went to the backstop.
• Kade Andersob pitching line: 4.1IP 3H 2R (both earned) 3BB 3K 85 pitches (54 for strikes)
• The Blue Jays tied it in the bottom of the 6th as Bateman singled scoring Charles McAdoo

• Louis Varland threw a perfect 9th for his 31st save of the season.

My Take:

• Jose Soriano fired 7 solid innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6. It's always tough when a start is delayed by a pregame ceremony and it showed early. Soriano was taken deep by Cal Raleigh in the 2nd inning and  he gave up 2 more runs in the 4th inning, but then kept the score where it was at. Soriano got stronger as the game went on and retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced.
• The bullpen threw 2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk and strking out 4. Closer Louis Varland looked sharp after a few days rest and retired the side in the ninth on a tidy 12 pitches.
• The offense get 'er done in the 5th, scoring a rare 2 runs on a wild pitch by Mariners reliever Eduard Bazardo, who gave up the series winning HR in last year's ALCS to Springer, who drew the bases loaded walk. The next inning, Bateman came through again with a game-tying RBI single and Captain Kirk followed that up immediately with his own clutch base hit to give the Blue Jays the lead. It feels like Vlad may never hit a home run at the Rogers center ever again. It is unfathomable that he still hasn't gone deep at home. The weight of that contract must feel like an albatross right now.
• Alejandro Kirk was successful on both ABS challenges. The Mariners were 1-2 on ABS challenges
• The Blue Jays were 3-7 with runners in scoring position.
• In terms of the wild card race, The Blue Jays, Rangers (play later tonight) and Orioles (play later tonight) are all 1.5 games back of the Guardians (lost today) for the 3rd WC spot. If the Rangers and Orioles win their respective games, they will gain another half game over the Blue Jays. The Mariners and Twins (lost today) are both 4 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Tigers (won today) are 4.5 games back of the 3rd WC spot.

After a beat-down yesterday due to a bad day for the pitchers and the offense doing nothing yet again, the Blue Jays were looking to start the weekend with a win as they welcomed the Seattle Mariners to town. The Mariners took the series in Seattle back on the 4th of July long weekend, outscoring the Blue Jays 15-2. Simeon-Woods Richardson, who was a disaster yesterday, was DFA'd. Righty CJ Van Eyk was recalled from AAA-ball. Ace Dylan Cease got the start with Brandon Valenzuelsa behind the plate. Jesus Sanchez was in LF and Brett Bateman was in CF. My Take:

• Dylan Cease fired 6 strong innings, giving up a run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 8. Cease became the first pitcher since some guy named Randy Johnson in 2001 to have 19 consecutive starts with 7+ strikeouts. Cease has easily been the best starter in the rotation and should garner some Cy Young votes
• The bullpen held the Mariners to a hit and 3 walks while striking out 1 over the last 3 innings, None of the relievers retired every batter they faced
• Offensively, Nathan Lukes (2 runs scored, including solo HR), George Spinger (3 runs scored, including solo HR), Kazuma Okamoto (3 RBI, including solo HR) and Vlad (RBI, run scored) led the way
• The Mariners were 1-1 on ABS challenges. The Blue Jays didn't attempt an ABS challenge
• The Blue Jays were 5-11 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the wild card race, the Blue Jaus are 2.5 games back of the Guardians, who lost tonight, for the 3rd WC spot. The Rangers (lost tonight) are 2 games back of the 3rd WC spot, the Orioles (leading the A's at the moment) are 2.5 games back of the 3rd WC spot, but will be 2 games back of the 3rd WC spot if they hang on to win tonight. My Take:

• Spencer Arrighetti batlled through 4 innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned thanks to a fielding error committed by him) on 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. The Blue Jays needed more out of him after another bullpen game yesterday. He's going to be a work in progress
• The rest of the bullpen gave up 9 runs on 11 hits while walking 4 and striking out 5 over the last five innings. None of the pitchers were particularly effective today.
• Offensively, George Springer broke the shutout bid with a 2-run HR in thhe 6th inning. Good that the home run jacket wasn't used given the score.
• The Blue Jays were successful on both their ABS challenges and the Royals didn't use an ABS challenge
• The Blue Jays were 1-6 with runners in scoring position
• It was a missed opportunity to gain ground in the WC race. The Blue Jays are now 3.5 games back of the Guardians for the 3rd WC spot. The Orioles (also lost today) are 3 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The remaining teams in the WC hunt were idle today. The Rangers are 2 games back of the 3rd WC spot, the Tigers and Mariners are 4 games back of the 3rd WC spot and the Tigers are 5.5 games back of the 3rd WC spot

After dropping yesterday's game due to a lste game rally falling short, the Blue Jays were looking to even the series and avoid their 21st series loss of the season. It was another bullpen day with Spencer Miles starting with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Jesus Sanchez got the start in LF. George Springer was back in the lineup as DH after a day off yesterday. Could the Blue Jays even the series and avoid their 21st series loss of the season? Here is tonight's game recap.

My Take: 

• It was bullpen day for the upteenth time with Spencer Miles as the opener. It is unprecedented the amount of injuries the Blue Jays have suffered in 2026. However, the injuries have also created opportunities for some of the prospects like Spencer Miles to break into the majors and Miles has done a great job, largely playing a role as a multi-inning guy, but was aldo stretched out to be a starter when the injury woes/suboptimal performances from Eric Lauer were at their peak. Tonight, Miles pitched the first 2 innings, giving up 2 hits, walking none and striking out 1. The Blue Jays need to address the lsck of pitching depth in the rotation, both in the off-season (acquiring 2 or 3 starters who have the ability to throw 5 or 6 innings on a consistent basis via free agency and the trade market) and in spring training (building up at minimum 6 and ideally 7 or 8 to offset any injuries and/or performance woes.
• The rest of the bullpen threw 7 shutout innings, giving up 4 hits, walking 2 and striking out 8. Chad Dallas, Paul Sewald and Mason Fluharty retired every batter they faced. Louis Varland, who had to escape a jam the normally reliable Tyler Rogers got into in the 8th inning for his 30th save of the season. Varland is the first closer since Roberto Osuna in 2017 to record at least 30 saves. Duane Ward has the single season Blue Jays record with 45 saves in 1993. Ward is the only Blue Jays closer with at least 40 saves.
• Nathan Lukes got some redemption after making the final out of the ball game and killing a late game rally by going deep for the only 3 runs of the game. Jesus Sanchez had a multi-hit game. I'm not convinced this offense can do enough to give the Blue Jays enough wins to make the playoffs. The Blue Jays really need Vlad's bat to catch fire.
• Alejandro Kirk was 1-2 on ABS challenges and the Royals were unsuccessful in their only ABS challenge
• The Blue Jays were 1-5 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the wild card race, the Blue Jays are 3 games back of the Guardians, who won earlier today for the 3rd WC spot. The Rangers are 1.5 games back oFthe Guardians for the 3rd WC spot, but they are looking like they will be 2 games back with the White Sox ahead by six runs and the Guardians down to their last 3 AB's with the game in the bottom of the 8th. The Orioles are 3 games back for the moment and will gain a half game if the score, that has the Orioles leading the Cardinals by a run in the bottom of the 9th holds. The Tigers are pretty much out of the race and sit 5.5 games back of the 3rd and final WC spot after a shutout loss to the Rays earlier today. The Mariners are 4 games back of the 3rd WC spot after a shutout loss to the Phillies. Finally,  the Twins lost as well and are 3.5 games back of the 3rd WC race.
• A shoutout to the Little League team from Little Mountain in East Vancouver, who repped Canada at the Little League World Series and kicked some butt, beating a heavily favored South Korea. They were knocked out of the tournanent by the formidable team from Japan. There have been some fine basebaall players who were born in BC, led by Larry Walkers. BCers who played for the Blue Jays include Jeff Francis, Michael Saunders, and Brett Lawrie. Who knows, maybe some of the kids from this little league squad will play in the majors or at least get drafted.

The Royals won the season series last year, outscoring the Blue Jays 45-21. Shane Bieber was placed on the 15-day IL (retroactive to August 21) with a right major teres strain. My  Take:

• Max Scherzer battled through 5 innings, giving up a pair of runs on 4 hits while walking 5 and striking out 4. He struggled with his command right from the get-go and got fortunate to escape the 1st inning with just one run allowed thanks to Salvador Perez hitting into a double play. He did settle down to retire 8 in a row at one point. The Blue Jays need Scherzer to go deeper in games as they continue to be pummeled in the injury department.
• The bullpen gave up 3 runs (just 1 earned thanks to a bad throw to first from Vladdy after fielding a bunt) on 6 hits while walking 4 and striking out 5 over the last 4 innings. None of the relievers got through an inning cleanly, but at least none of the runs were charged to Brendan Little, Mason Fluharty or Paul Sewald.
• The offense didn't do muchh except tying the game immediately after the Royals took the lead thanks to a Jesus Sanchez ssac fly and a clutch base hit by Nathan Lukes, who ended the game trying to stretch the single into a double. Alejandro Kirk's hitting streak came to an end. Gutsy effort by Ernie Clement to stay in the game after fouling the ball off his balls. Next time he'll be weariing a cup after that experience
• The Blue Jays were 3-1 on ABS challenges. Royals catcher Carter Jensen was unsuccessful on the Royals only ABS challenge
• The Blue Jays were a dreadful 1-11 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the wild card race, The Blue Jays are now 2.5 games back of the Guardians (who are currently losing their game against the Angels, who are playing the spoiler role very well) for the 2rd WC spot. The Rangers (who lost to the White Sox) are a half game back of the 3rd WC spot The Orioles (spanked the Cardinals 13-1) and Twins (currently losing to the A's) are both 2 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Mariners (currently tied with the Phillies in their game tonight) are 3 games back of the 3rd WC spot. Finally, the Tigers, whp won today, are 4 games back of the 3rd WC spot. Three of the runs should not have been charged to him because he should have been done after 5 innings. This game shows the inability of the front office to address the lack of pitching depth. Yes, they could not have anticipated every single injury that occurred, but they knew Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios, Trey Yesavage (pitched through 4 tiers last season) and Bowsdenn Francis would all be unavailable to start the season. It didn't help that Cody Ponce tore his ACL his first start of the season and both Eric Lauer and Max Scherzer were unable to replicate the 2025 season.
• The bullpen gave up 3 more runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4 over the last 3 innings. At least they stayed away from most of the high leverage guys, other than Mason Fluharty
• The sputtering offence produced a run on a sac fly and a clutch base hit off the red hot bat of Alejandro Kirk, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Not good enough 
• Neither team was successful in ABS challenges with the Yankees 0-2 and Alejandro Kirk unsuccessful on the Blue Jays only ABS challenge.
• The Blue Jays were 1-9 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the WC race, the Blue Jays and Twins (could gain a half game if they win today) are 1.5 games back of the Rangers for the 3rd WC spot.. The Guardians look like they are going to be tied with the Rangers with a win today. The Orioles already lost and are 2 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Mariners are losing and could fall to 3 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Tigers have already lost and are 3.5 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Tigers, Rangers, Guardians, Mariners, and Twins all play tomorrow and would gain a half game on the idle Blue Jays with wins

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was reinstated from the 7-day concussion IL (and took his spot at 1B) and Davis Schneider was optioned to AAA-ball. Ace Dylan Cease got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Daz Cameron was in LF Myles Straw was in CF and Brett Bateman was in RF. George Springer served as DH. My Take:

• Dylan Cease fired 6.2 strong innings, giving up a run on 2 hits while walking 5 and striking out 8. His command wasn't the best today and the walks and strikeouts drove up the pitch count. Cease is so good that evven when he isn't at his best, it's hard to get to him. Cease had a no-hitter going into the 7th inning. It would have been nice to let him finish the 7th inning, but the Blue Jays are pretty much in must win territory every game now. They have very little margin for error with so many teams fighting for one playoff spot.
• The bullpen gave up a pair of runs on 2 hits while walking none and striking out 4 over the last 2.1 innings. Tyler Rogers experienced 2 firsts on the season: he hit his first batter and was taken deep for the first time this season. Spencer Miles retired the only batter he faced
• Nathan Lukes came off the bench and gave the Blue Jays 2 massive insurance runs, including a solo HR in the 8th inning. Alejandro Kirk didn't waste any time extending is hitting streak to 11 games with a base hit in the 1st inning. Vlad also got a base hit right away in his return to the lineup. George Springer and Charles McAdoo drove in the other two runs the Blue Jays scored
• The Blue Jays were 1-2 on ABS challenges and the Yankees were 3-2 on ABS challenges

Alejandro Kirk drove in the Blue Jays only run in a 3-1 loss to the Yankees

After pulling off a huge series win in Tampa thanks to 7 strong innings from Shane Bieber, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 2 games as they continued the road trip in the Bronx. The Yankees and Blue Jays split the first 10 games of the season series with the Blue Jays outscoring the Yankees 36-35. Josh Smith was placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to August 20) with left hamstring inflammation and Davis Schneider was recalled from AAA-ball. Spencer Arrighetti was activated from the 10-day IL and lefty Brendan Cellucci was optioned back to AAA-ball. It was another bullpen day with Mason Fluharty opening and Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Brett Bateman was back in the lineup in CF after missing a couple of days with a sore hamstring. Myles Straw was in LF. Kazuma Okamoto was at the hot corner, Ernie Clement was at SS, Charles McAdoo was at 2B and Brandon Valenzuela got the start at 1B. Could the Blue Jays make it 2 straight wins? My Take:

• It was another bullpen day and I'll bet Mason Fluharty won't be tapped as the opener again. He walked 2 batters and only threw 4 strikes of the 14 pitches he threw. This is why I hate the opener. Starting a game vs. coming out of the bullpen are two very different beasts and  require very different preparation. Dennis Eckersley was probably the best pitcher to have succeeded in both roles. Mariano Rivera, the most famous closer in the game was a starting pitcher his first season in the bigs and he wasn't successful at it. He was much better as a closer. The Blue Jays should have at least 2 or 3 relievers who can handle a starter's role and workload on top of the traditional five to account for injury and poor performance. Having bullpen days once or twice every 5 days is not sustainable and will wear down the bullpen.
• The rest of the bullpen gave up 3 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 12 over the last 7.1 innings. Spencer Arrighetti took the loss for giving up the three runs. Brayden Fisher and Paul Sewald retired every batter they faced.
• Offensively, Alejandro Kirk drove in the Blue Jays' only run and extended his hitting streak to 10 games at the same time. His bat needs to stay in the lineup while it is sizzling hot. Brett Bateman also had a good  day at the plate with 3 base hits and scored the only run for the Blue Jays. Jesus Sanchez was the only other Blue Jay to reach base more than once with 2 base hits.
• Alejandro Kirk was 2-1 on ABS challenges and Yankees catcher Ali Sanchez was unsuccessful on the Yankees only ABS challenge of the game
• The Blue Jays were an abysmal 1-14 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the wild card race, the Blue Jays and Guardians are both a game back of the Rangers and Twins for the 3rd WC spot. The Orioles and Tigers are 1.5 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Mariners are 3 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Twins and Rangers are currently tied in their respective games while the Guardians are winning big in their game and could move into a tie with the Blue Jay if the lead holds. The Mariners are leading their game and could gain a half game if they win. The Orioles won their game and the freefalling Tigers lost their game. Every game feels like a must win with so many teams very much in contention for the 3rd WC spot.

My Take:

• Shane Bieber fired 7 strong innings, giving up a run on 4 hits while walking none and striking out 7. He retired the first 9 batters he faced and 11 of the last 12. Bieber has really gotten into a rhythm and has looked much more like the pitcher that won the 2020 AL Cy Young after missing the first 2 months of the season with arm issues. If he keeps pitching like this, he's going to command big time money in free agency in the off season
• The bullpen held the Rays to a hit and a walk over the last 2 innings. Not sure if would have used closer Louis Varland in the 9th inning of a non-save situation with the Blue Jays likely to need him in New York.
• The Blue Jays are starting to hit for power with Kazuma Okamoto, Nathan Lukes and Daz Cameron all going deep.  George Springer also knocked in a pair with a clutch base hit. 
• There has to be concern about Andres Gimenez going down with a hamstring injury.  If he needs an IL stint, look for Davis Schneider to be recalled since he can play 2B or LF. 
• The Blue Jays were 2-1 on ABS challenges and the Rays were 3-1 on ABS challenges 
• The Blue Jays were 1-11 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the wild card race, after the win today, the Blue Jays are just a half game back of the Twins for the 3rd WC spotand are tied (for the moment) with the Rangers, who are in a scoreless tie with the Nationals early in their game tonight and would gain a half game on the Blue Jays with a win. The Guardians (won today) are a half game back of the Blue Jays, the Orioles (currently losing to the Yankees) are a game back of the Blue Jays but will fall back a half game if they lose tonight. The Tigers, who were idle today, are also a game back of the Blue Jays (or 1.5 games back of the 3rd WC spot. The Mariners are 3 back of the 3rd WC spot and losing to the Brewers, so their playoff hopes are dwindling fast.

My Take:-

• Max Scherze battled through 4 innings, giving up 7 runs on 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1. He was clearly unhappy with the horrible play by Jesus Sanchez that led to a 5 run inning that ended up being the difference in the game. At the same time, Scherzer needs to be able to limit the damage and he was unable to do that. The Blue Jays could have used another inning or two from the veteran righty.
• The bullpen held the Rays to three hits while walking none and striking out four over the last four innings. Paul Sewald and Mason Fluharty both retired every batter they faced
• The rejuvenated offense tried to rally but fell a run short. Alejandro Kirk (2RBI, including a solo HR), Charles McAdoo (2RBI) and Nathan Lukes and Kazuma Okamoto, who both drove in a run each, led the way
• The Blue Jayd were 1-2 on ABS challenges. The Rays didn't attempt any ABS challenges today.
• The Blue Jays were 3-7 with runners in scoring position

The Rays have dominated the season series, winning 8 of the first 10 games in the season series, outscoring the Blue Jays 54-28. Lenyn Sosa cleared outright assignment waivers and was assigned to AAA-ball. Jose Soriano got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Jesus Sanchez was in LF, Brett Bateman was in CF and Nathan Lukes was in RF. Josh Smith was at the hot corner and Kazuma Okamoto got the start at 1B. My Take:

• Jose Soriano battled through 5.2 innings, giving uo 3 runs on 9 hits while walking none and striking out 2. He was pitching on an extra day of rest and his command was off a touch. Soriano was good enough to be able to battle out of the jams he got into, other than the 4th inning when he uncorked a wild pitch and gave up a 2-run single. He certainly has the arsenal to be a very good piece in the Blue Jays rotation for years to come
• The bullpen gave up a pair of runs on 4 hits while walking none and striking out none over the last 3.1 innings. Mason Fluharty and Spencer Miles retired every batter they faced. Matt Waldron should have thrown his last pitch as a Blue Jay tonight. This is the second consecutive outing where the Blue Jays had to get a reliever up and throwing and eventually in the ball game. The bullpen is already very overworked. They can ill afford to keep Waldron around if he can't handle pitching in the lowest leverage spot - the last innings of a blowout.
• The offense exploded today with a 10 run 17 hit output led by Alejandro Kirk (3RBI, includiing a 2-run HR; finished a triple shy of the cycle), Josh Smith (2-run HR), Ernie Clement (3 runs scored), George Springer (run scored, RBI), and Brett Bateman (run scored, RBI)
• Every Blue Jays starter had a hit and all but Andres Gimenez either scored a run or drove in a run
• Alejandro Kirk was 0-2 on ABS challenges and the Rays were 1-2 on ABS challenges
• The Blue Jays were 4-14 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the uber tight wild card race, the Blue Jays are effectively tied with the Twins and Rangers for the 3rd wild card spot with the Guardians, Orioles and Tigers a half game back of the Blue Jays, Rangers and Twins. The Mariners aren't out of the race either and are 2 games back. The Rangers are up 5-0 on the Nationals and look like they are well on their way to a win, the Mariners are getting spanked 12-0 by the Brewers, the Tigers and Orioles lost their games while the Guardians and Twins won theirs. This race is almost certainly going to come down to the wire unless one team, like the Blue Jays goes on a big run (very possible given the favorable schedule after this week, but msny of the remaining games will be against the very teams they are battling for the wild card spot) or a big losing streak could take a team out of the race. It's going to be a fun final 5 weeks of the season.

ten random thoughts: post-trade deadline/home stretch edition

 

We are a couple of weeks after the trade deadlne with six weeks left in the 2026 regular season. In this edition of ten random thoughts, we'll look at the latest injuries and their impact on the team going forward, the trade deadline - players accquired and players sent packing, look ahead to the home stretch and the remaining games and more. Buckle up Blue Jays fans, we are fast approaching the last station in this wild 2026 season. Here are ten random thoughts from around the MLB.

1. The 2026 season has been an unmitigated nightmare for the Blue Jays and the proverbial hits kept on comimg in the last few weeks. Fitst came the news that Yimi Garcia's season has effectively ended before it began. The 35-year-old righty, who has been plagued with injuries the last 2 years, now heads into free agency dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome. At the moment Garcia is deciding whether to have surgery to correct the issue, which would keep him out well into the 2027 season, if it happens. Then Trey Yesavage injured the meniscus in his right knee warming up for the 3rd inning of his first start of August and had surgery last Tuesday to repair the damage.. Even the trade deadline acquisitions aren't safe from the injury situation in Toronto. Jameson Taillon pulled himelf after the 4th inning of his first home start last Monday with forearm tightness - always a concern since that can be a precursor to a tommy john surgery. Hopefully the Blue Jays learned their lesson from Jose Berrios and will take every precaution with Taillon before the injury becomes worse. Spencer Arrighetti was diagnosed with Morton's Neuroma, essentially feels like you are stepping on a rock evidentally. Why the Blue Jays are going to let him try to pitch through it I have no idea. It's likely Arrighetti will change his mechanics, which could compromise other body parts like his shoulder, elbow or back. It looks like the Blue Jays are going to end the year the way it started - with a bullpen day every 5 days. Among the walking wounded are Vlad (missed a couple of days with a sore quad), Kazuma Okamoto (took a foul ball off the knee cap) annd George Springer (missed a couple of days with left shoulder sooreness). In the coming weeks, once the Blue Jays are (likely) mathematically eliminated, you will see some players like Vlad (he is currently on the 7day concussion IL after getting kneed in the head, Springer (battling a sore left shoulder and others who have been playing through injuries, shut down for the year. Quite frankly, the medical staff needs an overhaul because the way they have been managing injuries isn't great.

2. Blue Jays traded away and how they are doing:

• Daulton Varsho - Set to become a free agent after 5 years in Toronto, Varsho essentially switched dugouts in Houston. He's not off to a great start in Houston, batting .140 with 1HR and 3RBI. His defense has been on the decline and he tends to be a streaky hitter at the best of times.
• Kevin Gausman - Fan favorite Kevin Gausman went to the windy city and the Chicago Cubs to give their pitching staff a boost, Also a pending free agent, it could just be a farewell instead of a goodbye with Gausman likely to give strong consideration to coming back to Toronto. Gausman did not have to face his former team in his first start as a Cub, instead facing the Royals on the road where he threw 7 strong innings to lead his new team to a win. Despite a regression this season. Gausman can still pitch a solid game and will give the Cubs a chance to win in the playoffs. He is 1-1 with a 6.17ERA over two starts after he was knocked around in his second start as a Cub
• Jeff Hoffman - For Jeff Hoffman, this is a welcome change of scenery. Blue Jays fans have not forgiven him for blowing the save in game 7 of the world series. The hope was Hoffman would rebound in 2026, but the 9th inning struggles continued and he was eventually removed from the closer's role after blowing 5 saves. He won't have to face the Blue Jays until next year. Hoffman is 0-1 with a 3.60ERA in 5 appearances as a Twin
• Adam Macko - This might have been the most surprising move since Macko was solid when he first came up. Sure he stumbled a bit more recently, but blame it on being overworked and maybe the league adjusting to him. Macko has not made an appearance for Texas yet. He was 2-0 with a 4.01ERA over 22 appearances for the Blue Jays this season. 

3. Blue Jays Acquired and how they are doing.

• Jose Soriano - Soriano is the big add at the deadline and will be a part of the rotation for the next few seasons. Soriano had a decent game against the Phillies, allowing a run on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 3 over 4.2 innings. He certainly has a lot of upside and was AL pitcher of the month in April
• Josh Smith - The utility infielder will see playing time at a few positions and start mainly against righties as a left-handed bat. Smith is batting .190 with 1 HR and an RBI over 21AB as a Blue Jay. In the field, he has 5 putouts and 15 assists so far.
• Jameson Taillon - The Blue Jays might only see a brief look at Taillon, who will be out at least a couple of weeks with right forearm tendenitis. Taillon, who was recently DFA'd by the Cubs  Taillom had a 3.38ERA over 2 starts before he got hurt.

4. Quirky stat from the trade deadline: The Blue Jays have 3 of the 4 AL pitchers of the month for 2026 (Soriano won the award in April, Spencer Arrighetti was AL pitcher of the month in May and Dylan Cease was AL pitcher of the month for July. The June winner was Rays righty Drew Rasmussen)

5. Here's the wild card scenario, the Blue Jays are tied the 3rd WC spot with the Rangers and Orioles. Just behind the Blue Jays are the Twins (won the season series and hold the tiebreaker), Guardians, and Tigers. The Mariners sit a half game back of the Blue Jays. At the moment, it look like it's going to take 80-85 wins to snag the last wild card spot. In a way, the Blue Jays control their destiy a bit since they have series remaining against all but the Twins

6. Some key series that will decide the Blue Jays playoff fate:

• August 28-30 vs. Seattle Mariners  - the Mariners took the series in Seattle on the 4th of July long weekend and will no doubt be motivated to deal a blow to the Blue Jays playoff chances after the Blue Jays eliminated them from the ALCS last year.
• September 1-3 @ Cleveland Guardians - The Blue Jays took the series in Toronto at the end of April. With the AL Central title also very much in play, the Guardians will be motivated to win.
• September 11-13 vs. Baltimore Orioles and September 21-23 @ Baltimore Orioles - The Blue Jays have a 4-3 edge in the season series. The Orioles are always a tough foe for the Blue Jays
• September- 14-16 vs. Detroit Tigers - The Blue Jays took the series in Detroit back in mid-May - at least they won't be facing reigning and 2-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal

7. The Red Sox run should not have counted last Monday. It feels like that rule was made up on the fly. The Red Sox lost track of how many outs there were period and runs on 3rd outs only count if the base runner crosses the plate before the 3rd out was made and Anthony Siegler was jogging off the field not toward home plate.

8. The Dodgers better enjoy their super roster now because once the salary cap/floor is implement and the deferred contract loophole is closed, that roster will be gutted and the Dodgers will no longer be able to buy all the best players in free agency or trade for the best available players at the trade deadline.

9. Finally, here's a fun story for all you video game junkies. I hope he slept and ate in those six days.

10. Blue Jay of the last month: Andres Gimenez. He's had some big hits since the all-star break, including one in the 10th inning Sunday to bring the Blue Jays witthin a run on Sunday. Since the all-star break, Gimeneez is batting .265 with 1HR and 8RBI over 83 AB

Dylan Cease fired 6.1 strong innings in a 4-2 extra innings loss to the Yankees

After another comeback win over the Yankees thanks to a 2RBI effort from Charles McAdoo, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 3 games and complete their 2nd sweep of the season. Ricky Tiedemann was optioned to AAA-ball and Brendon Little was activated from the paternity list. Ace Dylan Cease got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Daz Cameron was in LF, Myles Straw was in CF and Brett Bateman was in RF. Ernie Clement was back in the lineup at 2B and George Springer was back in the lineup as DH after a day off yesterday. Could the Blue Jays make it 3 straight wins and comeplete their 2nd sweep of the season? Here is today's game recap.

• The Yankees opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd on a sac fly by Luis Garcia Jr. that scored Jose Caballero
• The Blue Jays tied it in the bottom of the 5th as Daz Cameron doubled scoring Kazuma Okamoto
• The Yankees retook the lead in the top of the 7th as Caballero singled scoring George Lombard Jr.. A second run was taken away when the review showed Charles McAdoo had tagged out Caballero before Jazz Chisholm Jr. crossed home plate for the 3rd out of the inning

• Ryan Weathers pitching line: 7.1IP 6H 1R (earned) 1BB 4K 95 pitches (59 for strikes)

• The Yankees took the lead in the top of the 10th as Ben Rice hammered a 2-run bomb to right-center; also scoring Ali Sanchez

• Tim Hill got the last 3 outs for his 2nd save of the season

My Take:

• Dylan Cease fired 6.1 strong innings, giving up a pair odf runs on 2 hits while walking 3 and striking out 10. He retired 11 in a row at one point and really didn't get into any real serious trouble all day. Cease is going to get serious consideration for the Cy Young. He'll face the same Yankees lineup in 5 days time.
• The bullpen gave up 3 runs (1 was charged to Cease after Brendon Little couldn't hold the score where it was) on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2 over 3.2 innings. Ex-Dbacks closer Pail Sewald made his Blue Jays debut and recorded 5 outs, allowing a hit and striking out a batter. Brayden Fisher took the loss after being taken deep by Ben Rice.
• The offense needs to start producing more because asking the pitchers to be Cy Young every time out isn't sustainsabble. Daz Cameron made an immediate contribution with an RBI double and Ernie Clement briefly tied the score in the 9th with a sac fly.
• Lots of ABS challenges today with a notoriously bad umpire behind the plate.  The Blue Jays successfully overturned all 3 ABS challenges. The Yankees were 7-2 on ABS challenges.
• The Blue Jays were 2-9 with runners in scoring position
• In terms of the wild card race, the Blue Jays are a game back of the Rangers and Orioles for the 3rd WC spot of the moment after dropping a half game with the loss. The Orioles beat the Rays and the Tigers lost to the White Sox. The Guardians/Padres were scoreless early in their game and the Rangers/A's were knotted at 2-2 in the 5th inning. The Orioles and Tigers play tomorrow and could gain a half game on the idle Blue Jays with wins tomorrow.
• Up next, after a travel day/off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays commence a road trip in the house of horrors that is Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay. The Rays have dominated the season series so far, winning 8 of the first 10 games in the season series, outscoring the Blue Jays 54-28. Jose Soriano will start for the Blue Jays on Tuesday, The Rays haven't set their rotation for the series yet.

After a huge comeback win over the Yankees, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 16th series win of the season. Rickey Tiedemann was recalled from AAA-ball and Chase Lee was optioned to AAA-ball. Lazaro Estrada was DFA'd. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was placed on the 7-day concussion IL. OF Daz Cameron was selected to the MLB roster. Brayden Fisher got the start with Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate. Josh Smith was at 2B and Charles McAdoo was at 1B. Alejandro Kirk served as DH. Could the Blue Jays make it 2 straight wins and notch their 16th series win of the season? Here is today's game recap.

My Take:

• Brayden Fisher faced an all too familiar position: first man out of the bullpen aka the opener of a bullpen day. It seems the baseball gods want the Blue Jays to have a bullpen day. With a full rotation on the IL (Jose Berrios, Cody Ponce, Trey Yesavage, Bowden Francis and Spencer Arrighetti) the Blue Jays were forced to piece it together to get 27 outs. Fisher got the first three on an efficient 12 pitches, walking 1 batter.
• The rest of the bullpen held the Yankees to a run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 7 over the last 8 innings. Rickey Tiedemann, after years of fighting his own body with injuries, finally made his MLB and rewarded the Blue Jays for their patience in his arrival. Tiedeman gave up a run on 2 hits, but recorded 5 outs, including his first two career strikeouts and his velocity was in the upper 90s. Mason Fluharty and Varland both retired every batter they faced. Thank goodness there is just one day left before a badly needed day off for the bullpen that is absolutely running on fumes after 17 straight days with games and 30 in 31. Spencer Miles, who has been great out of the bullpen, was credired with the win.
• The offense keeps finding ways to caa in runs when they need them. While they are still not exactly tearing the cover off the baseball consistentl, the Blue Jays are getting things done through classic small ball - sac bunts to be exact. Charles McAdoo is taking full advantage of his second stint with the Blue Jays, driving in a pair today. Alejandro Kirk knotted the game at one with a clutch RBI single. This team is getting back to what made them successful last year - comeback wins - never being out of a game.
• Tomorrow could be wi;d - pending the results of the rest of today's games. Detroit has already lost to the White Sox. At the moment, there is a 4-way tie for the 3rd and final WC spot. If the Twins and Rangers lose their games tonight, the Blue Jays will wake up only tied with the Twins for the 3rd WC spot. If the Twins and Rangers both win, the Blue Jays and Tigers would be a half game back of the Twins and Rangers for the 3rd WC spot. The Orioles are also within striking distance.

After pulling out another win thanks to a 5-run 8th inning rally and Louis Varland bailing out knuckleballer Matt Waldron, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 4 games, complete their 2nd sweep of the season and improve their record on my birthday to 22-23 and extend the winning streak on my birthday to 2 games. Brendon Little was put on the paternity list and Lazaro Estrada was recalled from AAA-ball. Max Scherzer got the start with Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate. Kazuma Okamoto was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. Charles McAdoo was in LF and Nathan Lukes was in RF. My Take:

• Max Scherzer battled through 5 innings, giving up a run on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Not the most efficient game, needing close to 100 pitches to get 15 outs when the bullpen is running on fumes. The veteran righty was able to pitch his way out of most of the jame he got into, keeping the Blue Jays within striking distance.
• Then there was the bullpen. Interestingly, John Schneider had Tyler Rogers warming up when the deficit was still one run and opted to go with the other sidewinder Chase Lee, who proceeded to give up a grand slam. Maybe Rogers was only available if the Blue Jays had a lead? Lazaro Estrada coughed up another couple of runs in the 9th inning. Certainly there are a couple of candidates to be demoted or DFA'd when Brendon Little returns from the paternity list and Paul Seward is activated tomorrow after being claimed off waivers yesterday.
• The offense was non-existent with some terrible AB's today. Charles McAdoo watched a middle-middle putch go by him for a strike and they did not work the count at all. Payton Tolle was averaging less than 10 pitches an inning most of the day.
• The Blue Jays squandered a great chance to gain a half game in the wild card standings with most of the teams in the race idle today. Instead, the Blue Jays fell back a half game.
• Brandon Valenzuela was 1-1 on ABS challenges. The Red Sox didn't atempt an ABS challenge today.
• The Blue Jays were 0-2 with runners in scoring position.

After prevailing over the Red Sox on the strength of a 2 RBI effort from Brett Bateman and a late clutch base hit off the bat of Myles Straw, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 3 games and notch their 15th series win of the season. Righty Paul Sewald was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks. Righty Jake Bloss was added to the MLB roster and moved to the 60 day IL.  Jose Soriano got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. My Take:

• Jose Soriano fired 6 solid innings,, giving up a run on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. One mistake pitch to Willson Contreras that went over the wall in left-center. Soriano faced the minimum through 3 innings and was bailed out by his catcher Alejandro Kirk, who gunned down Ceddane Rafaela at 3B on a wild pitch by Soriano. No question he'll be a huge part of the rotation in the coming years.
• The bullpen gave up 3 runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1 over the last 3 innings. Mason Fluharty and Louis Varland, who had to bail out knuckleballer Matt Waldron after he struggled in the 9th inning with a 5-run lead.
• The offense exploded for a 5-run rally in the 8th inning. Kazuma Okamoto contributed with 2 runs scored and an RBI in his return to the lineup. George Springer came in as a pinch hitter and drove in a run with a sac fly.
• In terms of the wild card race, the Blue Jays passed the Orioles and are 2.5 games back of the Texas Rangers for the 3rd wild card spot with the Tigers, Twins and Guardians in the way. All teams are idle tomorrow so the Blue Jays will gain a half game if they win tomorrow
• Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschmann was 2-1 on ABS challenges. The Blue Jays did not attempt an ABS challenge today.
