Game #45 Tampa Bay Rays (29-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-22) - game recap

Teoscar Hernandez was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI in a losing effort as the Rays came from behind to defeat the Blue Jays 6-4

The Blue Jays and Rays continued their four game set with a matinee today. Ace Hyun-Jin Ryu got the start. Same lineup as yesterday, except Vlad was back in the foeld, Lourdes was back in his usual LF, Teoscar Hernandez was given the hald day off as DH with Grich in RF and Jonathan Davis in CF. Could the Blue Jays snap the 4-game losing streak? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Rays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Manuel Margot singled scoring Randy Arozarena
  • Michael Wacha pitching line: 2IP 1H 0R 0BB 1K 24 pitches (14 for strikes)

  • Three batters later, a bases loaded walk to Austin Meadows forced in Taylor Walls
  • A batter later, a bases loaded walk to Manuel Margot forced in Phillips
  • A batter later, a bases loaded walk to Mike Brosseau forced in Yandy Diaz
  • JP Feyereisen pitched a scoreless 9th for his 1st save of the season
  • Final score: Rays 6 Blue Jays 4

My Take:

  • Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched a strong game, giving up a pair of runs on 8 hits while walking one and striking out 7.  He was able to make the pitches he needed to and escape the jams he got into
  • Another blown save for the bullpen. Rafael Dolis blew the save Thursday vs. Boston. The last 2 games, the bullpen gave up late runs in a tie ball game and the Blue Jays were unable to come back. Tonight, Tyler Chatwood gave up 4 runs on 2 hits and walked 2. Travis Bergen then proceeeded to walk three straight batters. All 4 runs were charged to Chatwood, but Bergen was directly responsible for three of four. This is a product of overusing the bullpen.
  • Batters 1-6 had at least 1 hit. Batters 7-9 were hitless. Offense was basically Teo. He was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI
  • The Blue Jays were 1-4 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays wrap up the home stand and play their final game in Dunedin until spring training 2022. They'll play their next home stand in Buffalo. They'll be looking to snap the 5 game losing streak. Lefty Ryan Yarborough starts against Blue Jays righty Ross Stripling
