Game #74 LA Angels (38-37) @ Toronto Blue Jays (26-48) - game recap

Rowdy Tellez hit a pair of home runs in a losing cause as the Angels thumped the Blue Jays 11-6

The score yesterday was much closer than it appeared. Marcus Stroman deserved to win, but his team managed three hits through the game's 1st 7 innings, one that left the ballpark. Tonight, the Blue Jays faced their second lefty in a row with Andrew Heaney getting the start. Vlad was back at third base tonight after serving as the DH last night. Danny Jansen started for the second straight day behind the plate. Could the Blue Jays beat the Angels? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:
  • The Angels opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd as Tommy La Stella doubled home Luis Rengifo
  • A batter later, Mike Trout smashed a two-run bomb to left-center; also scoring La Stella
  • The Blue Jays tied it in the bottom half of the inning one one swing as Rowdy Tellez clobbered a three-run blast to dead center also scoring Danny Jansen and Freddy Galvis
  • The Angels added four more runs in the top of the 4th on a Trout grand slam that also scored Rengifo, La Stella and Jonathan Lucroy
  • Aaron Sanchez pitching line: 3.2IP 9H 7R (6 earned) 2BB 0K 85 pitches (51 for strikes)
  • Andrew Heaney pitching line: 3.2IP 4H 5R (all earned) 4BB 2K 80 pitches (47 for strikes)
  • The Angels added two more runs in the top of the 7th as Derek Law threw the ball away allowing David Fletcher and Kole Calhoun to score
  • The Angels added a run in the top of the 8th as Justin Upton slammed a solo shot into the second deck in left
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 8th as Tellez cranked a solo drive to right
  • The Angels added a run in the top of the 9th as Trout singled home Justin Bour
  • Final score: Angels 11 Blue Jays 6
My Take:
  • Woof, that was a rough two innings for Aaron Sanchez, who gave up 7 runs on 7 hits, a walk and catcher interference in the 2nd and 4th innings combined. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the first time a starting pitcher (not including openers who just pitched an inning) did not have a strikeout. Sanchez really needs to work on his command because he is getting hit hard and lowering potential trade value.
  • Mike Trout single-handedly beat the Blue Jays with a pair of home runs and an RBI single for a whopping 7RBI
  • Eric Sogard and Rowdy Tellez basically provided the offence for the Blue Jays, combining to drive in all 6 runs
  • It was a rough night defensively with 3 errors on the night (Danny Jansen was called for catcher interference, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had a fielding error and Derek Law threw the ball away)
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to avoid getting swept in another battle of the lefties with Clayton Richard pitching against Jose Suarez
