Game #90 Baltimore Orioles (27-61) @ Toronto Blue Jays (33-57) - game recap

Andrew Cashner threw 7 strong innings as the Orioles routed the Blue Jays 8-1

After a loss last night to the lowly Baltimore Orioles, the Blue Jays were back at it looking to even this weekend series. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was back in the lineup after missing last night to rest a wrist he rolled Thursday. Danny Jansen got a half day off, serving as the DH while Luke Maile got the start behind the plate. Could the Blue Jays beat the Orioles and snap the 2 game losing streak? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:
  • The Orioles opened the scoring in the top of the 4th as Renato Nunez lined one into the second deck in left; also scoring Trey Mancini
  • Three batters later, Anthony Santander singled home Pedro Severino
  • A batter later, Keon Broxton doubled scoring Anthony Villar
  • Two batters later, Santander scored on a groundout by Richie Martin
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Cavan Biggio singled home Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • The Orioles added a run in the top of the 6th as Stevie Wilkerson singled home Villar
  • Clayton Richard pitching line: 6IP 7H 6R (3 earned) 1BB 2K 93 pitches (61 for strikes)
  • Andrew Cashner pitching line: 7IP 3H 1R (earned) 0BB 4K 88 pitches (61 for strikes)
  • The Orioles added a run in the top of the 8th as Santander singled home Villar
  • The Orioles added a run in the top of the 9th as Wilkerson smashed a solo bomb to the second deck in right
  • Final score: Orioles 8 Blue Jays 1
My Take:
  • Clayton Richard battled his way through 6 innings, giving up 6 runs, 7 hits and a walk. Just half the runs were earned thanks to Justin Smoak and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. booting a couple of ground balls. Richard actually cruised through the first 3 innings, allowing just a single and a walk. To me, the lefty has done enough to keep for the duration of the season, especially given the options there are to pitch.
  • Not a great day for the offence, managing just three hits and four base runners. Vlad broke up the perfect game, slapping one up the middle in the 4th. Danny Jansen had his hitting streak snapped, going 0-3.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays wrap up the homestand and the unofficial first half looking to avoid being swept by the lowly Orioles, who will send righty Asher Wojciechowski to the mound. Trent Thornton starts for the Blue Jays, looking to bounce back from a rough outing where he was roughed up for 7 runs on 11 hits over 2.2 innings.
  • NOTE: After I release my weekly random thoughts post Monday, I will be taking some time off until Friday's game. If anyone has an article they want to post this week, feel free to do so.
