Game #132 Toronto Blue Jays (60-72) @ Baltimore Orioles (39-94) - game recap

Craig Gentry was 3-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored as the Orioles pounded the Blue Jays 12-5

Here we are with exactly a month left in the season. We've seen franchise records set (Kendrys Morales HR streak), countless players making their big league debuts (Danny Jansen, Sean Reid-Foley, Thomas Pannone and Ryan Borucki, to name a few.Tonight, Pannone made his second career start as the Blue Jays looked to shake off a disappointing 7-0 loss last night. Josh Donaldson began his rehab assignment tonight and no doubt the Blue Jays will try to find a suitor for the impending free agent. Blue Jays fans should enjoy seeing the likes of Curtis Granderson and Justin Smoak over the next couple of days because they could be gone in trades by Friday. Here is today's game recap.

My Take

  • Thomas Pannone's second career start didn't go quite as well as his first career start. He was tagged for 7 runs on 9 hits and a walk in 3.1 innings. He was not locating his pitches today and the Orioles made him pay. Pannone deserves a third start and should get it as Marcus Stroman likely won't be ready to return yet.
  • Actually, nobody pitched particularly well today. Biagini hit a pair of batters and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits. Newcomer Murphy Smith was tagged for 3 runs on 4 hits (Aledmys Diaz misplaying a foul ball he should have caught did not help). Tim Mayza had the only clean inning of the game. Ryan Tepera did pretty well too, allowing just the one hit.
  • Randal Grichuk had a great day at the plate with a 4-5 effort, a pair of RBI and a run scored.
  • Kevin Pillar, Justin Smoak and Teoscar Hernandez all had multi-hit games.
  • The Blue Jays were 2-5 with runners in scoring positions and strikeouts ended rallies 3 times, including Teoscar Hernandez striking out to end the game. The Blue Jays left 10 runners on base today. By contrast, the Orioles stranded 6 runners.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays look to avoid being swept by the Orioles and snap a three game losing streak as they turn to rookie Ryan Borucki, who will be matched up against Orioles righty Alex Cobb.
