Game #30 - Boston Red Sox (17--15) @ Toronto Blue Jays (14-16) - game recap

Alejandro Kirk drove in the winning run in a huge 7-6 extra innings comeback wim over the Red Sox

After a brutal loss yesterday thanks to a very rough start by Bowden Francis, the Blue Jays were looking to snap the 3-game skid. Casey Lawrence was DFA'd after a rough appearance yesterday. Lefty Eric Lauer was recalled from AAA-ball. Yariel Rodriguez got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. George Springer was in LF after the half day off as DH yesterday (Anthony Santander served as DH tonight). Addison Barger got the start in RF. Could the Blue Jays snap the 3-game skid? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the 1st on a balk by Yariel Rodriguez that scored Rafael Devers
  • Same batter, Alex Bregman hammered a solo bomb to the 2nd deck in left
  • Yariel Rodriguez pitching line: 1IP 2H 2R (both earned) 2BB 1K 29 pitches (16 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 3rd as Jarren Duran singled scoring Ceddanne Rafaela
  • A batter later, Devers doubled home Duran
  • Hitting coach David Popkins was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the bottom of the 4th
  • The Red Sox added a pair of runs in the top of the 6th as Carlos Narvaez hammered a 2-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Rafaela
  • The Blue Jays got a pair back in the bottom half of the inning as Daulton Varsho belted a 2-run jack in the bottom half of the inning; also scoring George Springer
  • A batter later, Alejandro Kirk smashed a solo blast to left-center
  • Lucas Giolito pitching line: 6IP 5H 3R (all earned) 2BB 7K 90 pitches (61 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays tied ir up in the bottom of the 7th as Anthony Santander belted a 3-run jack to right and into the Red Sox bullpen; also scoring Ernie Clement and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • The Blue Jays walked it off in the bottom of the 10th as Alejandro Kirk singled home Guerrero Jr.
  • Final score: Blue Jays 7 Red Sox 6 (10 innings)

My Take:

  • It was definitely not an ideal start for Yariel Rodriguez, who was picked to be the opener. Rodriguez threw behind a batter, balked in the 1st run and promptly was taken deep on the same batter. Starting and relieving are two different entities and pitchers pretty much need two different mentalities. There are pitchers who have done both, most infamously sidewinder Dennis Eckersley. He won his Cy Young as a full-time reliever. He was 4th in Cy Young voting in 1978 as a starter. Relievers and starters prepare differently both physically and mentally. Starting pitchers know they will start every 5th day and relievers have set roles and pitch on back to back days for shorter durations. This spot in the rotation is something that needs to be addressed because Max Scherzer is going to be out several weeks and Alek Manoah and Rickey Tiederman will not be ready until after the all-star break.
  • For the remainder of the bullpen, it was mixed results. For 5 innings, Eric Laurier and Chad Green combined to give up 4 runs on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4. Yimi Garcia, Brandon Litlle and Jeff Hoffman, who was credited with the win, threw up a brick wall, limiting the Bosox to just one hit, walked none and struck out 6 batters. It might have been a different result if the game went a further inning though, since most of the relievers had already pitched and the bullpen was needed for 6 innings yesterday.
  • The bats struck in a big way over 2 innings. Daulton Varsho got things started with a 2-run HR. Alejandro Kirk, who also drove in the winning run, followed him up with his own solo HR. Anthony Santander tied it with a 3-run bomb in the 7th. Maybe the team was inspired by Daulton Varsho's effort or maybe they were fired up by David Popkins standing up for them and the bad umping. Either way, great comeback.
  • The Blue Jays were 2-7 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try for their 2nd straight win and 4th series win of the season. Ace Jose Berrios starts against Red Sox righty Tanner Houck

Game #29 - Boston Red Sox (17-14) @ Toronto Blue Jays (13-16) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr, hit a 2-run HR in a 10-2 loss to the Red Sox

After a disastrous road trip, the Blue Jay limped home to start a week long homestand that began tonight against the Red Sox. The Blue Jays won 3 of 4 in Fenway, outsscoring the Red Sox 17-8. Daulton Varsho made his season debut, activated off the 15-day IL and was in CF.  Casey Lawrence, who was claimed off waivers from Seattle yesterday, reported to the team. Righty Paxson Schultz and infielder Will Wagner were optioned to AAA-ball. Bowden Francis got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Myles Straw was in LF. Ernie Clement was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays snap the 2-game skid and start the week and homestand with a win? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Jarren Duran belted a solo jack to right-center
  • Two batters later, Alex Bregman hammered a solo bomb to the 3rd deck in left
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 2nd as Kristian Campbell whacked a solo blast to the opposite field in right
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 3rd as Rafael Devers hammered a solo bomb to the 3rd deck in right
  • Three batters later, Willy Abreu hammered a 3-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Bregman and Trevor Story
  • The Blue Jays got a pair back in the bottom half of the inning as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hammeres a 2-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Bo Bichette
  • Bowden Francis pitching line: 3IP 8H 7R (all earned) 0BB 1K 72 pitches (49 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 8th on a ground out hit by Durran that scored Ceddanne Rafaela
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 9th as Campbell doubled scoring Bregman
  • A batter later, Wilyer Abreu scored on a ground out hit by Triston Casas
  • Final score: Red Sox 10 Blue Jays 2
  • Garrett Crochet pitching line: 7IP 4H 2R (both earned) 3BB 5K 94 pitches (62 for strikes)

My Take:

  • It's generally not a winning strategy to give up five home runs for 7 runs. That's what happened to Bowden Francis, who labored through three innings where the Red Sox were pounding his pitches.
  • Casey Lawrence gave up 3 runs on 6 hits. Something tells me he won't be a Blue Jay for long
  • The lone offensive highlight was a Vladdy smash over the center field wall for the Blue Jays only 2 runs
  • The Blue Jays were 1-3 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to snap the 3-game skid. The Red Sox will start righty Lucas Giolito. The Blue Jaus have not announced a starter in what is likely a bullpen day.

Ten random thoughts: Weeks 1-4 of the MLB season

A month into the MLB season and it has been a glass half full, glass half empty season. The Blue Jays are sitting 2nd in the AL East primarily because the pitching has been solid and the Blue Jays have been producing enough runs most nights through small ball. They got a major distraction off their backs by inking Vladimir Guerrero Jr, to a lifetime deal. Injury wise, Max Scherzer is the biggest concern with the most impact, more on that later. Power, or lack thereof, is a major issue. They continue to struggle with runners in scoring position. We'll address all of the above and more. Here are 10 random thoughts from around the MLB from month one of the season.

1. As always, we start things off with the injuries and their impact on the team. The first significant injury that came to light actually emerged in spring training with 5th starter Max Scherzer. The forty year old righty was signed to a one year deal just before the season began to add a veteran presence to the rotation. The big risk in signing an aging pitcher is the likelihood of an injury occurring. Unfortunately for Scherzer and the Blue Jays, that injury happened in his first start of the season. Scherzer was hoping to throw around 80 pitches in the game, but he only made it through Innings and about 50 pitches. Throughout spring training and dating back to the 2023 season, Scherzer have been dealing with a thumb injury that had been ampering him and leading to other parts of the body being impacted. The thumb issue limited Scherzer to just 9 starts last season. He had a cortisone shot in his thumb near the knuckle. While it is encouraging that shcherzer was able to throw on l consecutive days in Houston this week, the blue jays will exercise caution with the rehab process for him. They are going to have to deal with figuring out the 5th starter for the next few weeks. Lefty Easton Lucas was tapped to replace Scherzer in the rotation. He did very well in his first two stars, but the last two starts have not gone well at all, to the point where the Blue Jays skipped the 5th starter this last turn, but they can not do that every time. Payton Schultz came in and pitched well after Lucas's last poor start. Alek Manoah and Rickey Tiederman, both recovering from Tommy John surgery, will not be ready to pitch until after the all star game.

Reliever Eric Swanson, who is recovering from ulnar nerve impingement in his pitching arm is nearing a formal rehab assignment. He threw a bullpen this week. His return will make the Blue Jays stronger at the back end of the bullpen. Righty Ryan Burr, who injured his shoulder in the spring training, is getting close to facing live hitters, which puts him a bit behind swanson in a potential return Burr was transferred to the 60 day IL on Sunday so he'll miss at least another month. Reliever Nick Sandlin, who has been dealing with a right lat strain, has not started throwing yet.

Finally, The blue jays are set to welcome back Daulton Varsho, who is set to make his season debut when the Blue Jays start their homestand tomorrow against the Red Sox. Varsho missed the first month of the season as he continued to rehab from off-season shoulder surgery. Varsho got into some spring training games as DH, but the Blue Jays did not want to risk him getting injured liding into a base.m. Also, Varsha wasn't ready to play in the field when he Blue Jays broke camp to start the regular season. Last season, Varsho batted .214 with 14 home runs and 58 RBI over 136 games. Varsho is a terrific defender so he will strengthen the Blue Bays outfield defense. The Blue Jays are going to have a tough decision to make as to who is demoted to AAA-ball. It will likely be between Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger. The Blue Jays may opt to stick with Lukes to give them an extra left-handed bat off the bench

2.  GM Ross Atkins deserves credit for managing to complete the complete the lifetime contract to star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. It didn't look like the deal would happen until the end of the season, if at all. Guerrero Jr.  made it very clear that he would not negotiate once spring training opened. The self-imposed deadline came and went with no contract signed. The two sides must have been close to a deal because negotiations continued once the regular.season began. It's also possible that Guerrero Jr's slow start to the season prompted Vlad to accept what the Blue Jays, were offering for fear of not getting as much on the open market. Also, until the deal was reached, the contract status was going to continue to be a big distraction that the team did not need. The fact that the Blue Jays were able to retain one of their own drafted selections will likely help them attract better free agents. Did the Blue Jays overpay? They didn't really have much choice. Ticket sales were down and management needed to do something to entice fans to come to the ballpark. In order to live up to this massive deal, Guerrero Jr. is going to have to have the season he had in 2021, when he hit a career high 48 HR and 111RBI, albeit playing in minor league ball parks for a good chunk of the home schedule due to covid-19 restrictions in Toronto. Two home runs in a month into the season isn't going to cut it.

3. Now that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk are both locked up long term, the next major player the Blue jays need to focus on signing is SS Bo Bichette, who is having a comeback season after a rough 2024 season that saw him miss half the season with a naked calf injury. He also had career laws in most statistical categories. Prior to last season, Bichette was the Blue Jays most consistent batter, Including leading the AL in hits in both twenty twenty one and twenty twenty two. Bichette hit over .300 in 3 of his first five seasons. Defensively,  he can be prone to throwing errors, but that is getting better with experience. If Guerrero Jr. is worth #500 million, Bichette should command at least that amount. It's crazy to me that the blue Jays have apparently put little effort into extending Bichette. The blue jays will also have to make decisions about their starting rotation with chris bassett's contract being up at the end of the season and kevin Gausman's expiring a year later. Bassitt has been solid this season and Gausman has also had a bounce back year. However, both pitchers are in their 30s. If Rickey Tiederman and Alek Manoah both recover from their Tommy John surgeries and pitch well in the latter part of the season, one or both may be considered for the rotation next year. Certainly where the Blue Jays are in the standings in a few months will dictate what happens at the trade deadline.

4. Stop me if you've heard this one before. The blue jays are struggling to drive runners in scoring position. This unfortunate trend is rearing its ugly head again. The blue jays came into the season hopeful that the addition of anthony santander would some pop to the lineup. They were also hoping as change in scenery might help Andre Gimenez. Is acquired in an off season trade, Gimenez Started at the season with a hot bat, hitting three home runs in the month of march. He has yet to hit one in april. Santander Hit his third home run of the season on Sunday, one of the few highlights from an ugly double header sweep at the hands of the Yankees. The expectations for Guerrero Jr are going to be sky high.Know that he signed that mammoth contract to make him third highest player in the major leagues. Regardless, his output isn't good enough. He should have more than two home runs a month into the season. One thing Vlad has always done consistently is hit the ball hard. The trouble is more often than not, it results in an out. This week, Astros and Yankees combined to outscore the Blue Jays 33-8. The Blue Jays were a combined 4-34 with runners in scoring position. On Tuesday,  they didn't even get a single runner into scoring position. They need to be better with hitting in the clutch and hit for power. Small ball can be effective but only to a point

5. Three Blue Jays who have impressed

  • Tyler Heineman - the Blue Jays backup catcher is having a solid start to the season, albeit with a smaller sample size since he is playing once or twice a week,  batting. 500 with 1HR and 5RBI. he has also done a solid job handling the pitchers.
  • Jeff Hoffman - originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 2014 MLB draft,  Jeff Hoffman inked a three year deal with the Blue Jays after the team opted to non-tender Jordan Romano, citing concerns about the health of his pitching elbow. Hoffman has been excellent with a 2-0 record, 6 saves and a 1.35ERA.
  • George Springer - talk about turning back the clock.  Veteran George Springer is playing like he's 25 and entering his prime. Before Sunday's double header, Springer was batting .329 with 2HR and 12 RBI. He is no longer batting leadoff, but he has been one of the Blue Jays most reliable hitters and is still solid in the outfield.  With Daulton Varsho set to return,  Springer can now play in RF full time,  which is what the team prefers to keep his body healthy and fresh.

6. three blue jays who have disappointed.

  • Davis Schneider - The Blue Jays outfielder, who rode a hot streak and became infamous for his trademark  mustache, may have seen his 15 minutes of fame come to an end. It's rare for players drafted as late as Schneider was (28th round) to play even one game in the majors. Schneider got a full season's worth of games over parts of three seasons.  He only managed a single hit in 21 AB this season and his success against lefties eroded. He was demoted to AAA-ball on April 17.
  • Richard Loveday - This was the biggest mistake the Blue Jays made for the opening day roster. The soft-throwing southpaw made two relief appearances, lost one of those games and had a brutal 21.60ERA when he was DFA'd.. if you're going to have a lower velocity,  you better be able to locate your pitches, which is something Loveday could not do.
  • Anthony Santander - the Blue Jays big off-season signing, Santander was expected to be a big power bat in the blue jays lineup. So far, he has just 3 home runs on the season and is hitting a mere .176 with 9RBI. quite frankly, he should swap places with Springer in the lineup because he is not producing enough to be the 3rd hitter in the batting order.

7. GM Ross Atkins didn't have a great off- season, missing out on the big prize Juan Soto. He did land Santander, who certainly did his fair share of damage against the Blue Jays in Baltimore. Andres Gimenez gives the Blue Jays a solid infield defense, but he isn't expected to be a big contributer offensively. The big litmus test will be how the massive contract to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ages. The renovations to the stadium may have backfired in that it has led to fewer home runs. The outfield dimensions changed and now players have to hit it very well to get it over the higher wall in left-center. The Blue jays are definitely going through a tough stretch coming off a 1-5 road trip. At this point, they aren't going to give up on the new hitting coach, Davidp Popkins yet. I do like that the Blue jays are utilizing the sac bunt more often, but they need to take advantage when a pitcher is struggling. Case in point, the Blue Jays loaded the bases in the 1st inning of yesterday's double header and could not add to the run that already scored. If the Blue Jays have another rough week or two, I can see manager John Schneider being the fall guy. Likely they would bring in an interim manager and let the remainder of the season be a probationary period.

8. The Blue Jays head to the West Coast and Seattle in a week and a half. If the Blue Jays fans in the crowd are noticeably diminished, it will be due to Donald Trump and his tariff/51st state threats and not how the Blue Jays are playing.

9. Let's end things off for this random thoughts post by looking at how some of the ex- blue jays are playing.  Down in sunny LA, Teoscar Hernandez is off to a solid start with a .277 average, 8HR and 25RBI. He would be leading the Blue Jays in HR and RBI. Yusei Kikuchi is off to a rough start with an 0-4 record and a 4.31ERA. The Blue jays are set to face Kikuchi and the Angels in LA next week. Former Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen is batting .140 with no home runs and 5RBI. Rays pitchers have had varying degrees of success as they get used to a new starting catcher calling the game. Former closer Jordan Romano is 0-1 with an ugly 13.50ERA and 1 save this season. Is he playing hurt?

10. Blue Jay of the month: Bo Bichette. The Blue Jays leadoff hitter is batting a solid .292 and leads the team with 13RBI. He makes things happen.  Leading of the double header yesterday,  Bichette forced a bad throw on an infield single, advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly.

Games #27 and 28 - Toronto Blue Jays (13-15) @ New York Yankees (17-11) - game recap (records will reflect what they were after the 2nd game of the double header)

Anthony Santander hit a solo HR in the 2nd game of a double header that saw the Blue Jays swept by the Bronx Bombers, falling 11-2 in the 1st game and 5-1 in the 2nd game

After a rain out yesterday, the Blue Jays were looking to build on a solid comeback win Friday. Outfielder Jonatan Clase was added to the roster as the 27th man was in LF in the 1st game (Alan Roden got the start in LF in the 2nd game. Ryan Burr was transferred to the 60-day IL. Kevin Gausman started the 1st game and Chris Bassitt started the 2nd game. Alejandro Kirk was behind the plate in the 1st game and Tyler Heineman caught the 2nd game. George Springer was in RF in the 1st game and got the half day off as DH in the 2nd game. Anthony Satander got the half day off as DH in the 1st game and was in RF in the 2nd game. Ernie Clement was at the hot corner in the 1st game and Will Wagner was at the hot corner in the 2nd game. Myles Straw was in CF in the 1st game and Nathan Lukes was in CF the 2nd game. Could the Blue Jays sweep the double header and notch their 4th series win of the season? Here is today's game recap(s)

Game Highlights (1st game):

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st on a ground out hit by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that scored Bo Bichette
  • The Yankees tied it in the bottom of the 3rd on a sac fly by Cody Bellinger that scored Oswaldo Cabrera
  • Two batters later, Ben Rice was forced in on a bases loaded walk to Jazz Chisholm Jr.
  • A batter later, Aaron Judge was forced in on a bases loaded walk to  Anthony Volpe
  • A batter after that, Austin Wells doubled scoring Chisholm Jr., Volpe and Paul Goldschmidt
  • John Schneider was ejected from the game in the top of the 5th for arguing balls and strikes
  • Kevin Gausman pitching line: 2.2IP 3H 6R (all earned) 5BB 2K 71 pitches (42 for strikes)
  • The Yankees added a run in the bottom of the 5th as Volpe whacked a solo blast to the opposite field in right
  • Three batters later, Cabrera doubled scoring Wells and Jasson Dominguez
  • The Yankees added a run in the bottom of the 6th as Goldschmidt doubled home Bellinger
  • Max Fried pitching line: 6IP 6H 1R (earned) 2BB 3K 101 pitches (65 for strikes)
  • The Yankees added a run in the bottom of the 8th on a fielder's choice hit by Chisholm Jr. that scored Bellinger. Ernie Clement was charged with a fielding error on the play.
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 9th as Addison Barger doubled scoring Myles Straw
  • Final score: Yankees 11 Blue Jays 2

My Take (1st game):

  • Kevin Gausman retired 7 of the first 8 batters he faced, then the wheels came completely off with the Yankees scoring 6 runs on 2 hits, 5 walks and a sac fly. Gausman threw an unbelieveable 53 pitches in the inning. He should have been removed a batter prior. Instead, he was left in to face Austin Wells, who pounded a bases-clearing double off the wall. On his way off the field, Gausman promptly yelled at home plate umpire Chris Conroy and was ejected from the game. To cap off his rough day, he took a tumble down the dugout stairs while yelling at the umpire (he was fine).
  • The bullpen didn't do any better, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits while walking 3 and striking out 8 over the last 5.1 innings. It wasn't ideal that the bullpen had to get that many outs.
  • The big difference in this first game of the double header was an inability to taje advantage of a Max Fried, who was not at his best. The Blue Jays loaded the bases and could not add to the run that had already scored. Myles Straw managed three hits and Vlad got none. Guess who's getting paid more?
  • The Blue Jays were 2-13 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the second game of the double header. Chris Bassitt starts against Yankees righty Clarke Schmidt
Game Highlights (2nd game):\
  • The Yankees opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Trent Grisham smashed a solo blast to right-center
  • The Blue Jays tied it up in the top of the 3rd as Anthony Santander hammered a solo bomb to the second deck in right
  • Clarke Schmidt pitching line: 5IP 1H 1R (earned) 4BB 6K 90 pitches (52 for strikes)
  • The Yankees retook the lead in the bottom of the 6th as Aaron Judge smashed a solo blast to the opposite field in right-center
  • Four batters later, Jasson Dominguez doubled scoring Jazz Chisholm Jr.
  • A batter later, JC Escarra singled home Dominguez
  • Chris Bassitt pitching line: 5.2IP 6H 4R (all earned) 1BB 5K 92 pitches (60 for strikes)
  • The Yankees added a run in the bottom of the 8th as Escarra hammered a solo bomb to right-center
  • Final score: Yankees 5 Blue Jays 1
My Take (2nd game):
  • Chris Bassitt battled through 5.2 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5.  The Yankees took him deep twice to right field. His trouble inning was the 6th inning where he was tagged for 3 runs on 4 hits, Unlike Gausman, he was removed pretty quick after he got into trouble. Then again, he was approaching 90 pitches and the Blue Jays were trying to keep the game close
  • The bullpen gave up a run (technically 2 if you count the run that scored on the first batter Brandon Little faced that was charged to Bassitt) while walking one and striking out 2 over the last 2.1 innings. Brandon Little did not retire a batter and Yariel Rodriguez retired every batter he faced
  • The lone highlight for the offence was a mammoth home run off the bat of Anthony Santander, who was the only Blue Jay to reach base multiple times in a game where the team appeared to be looking ahead to a flight home after a disastrous road trip.
  • The Blue Jays were 0-4 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, after an off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays will be looking to snap the 2-game skid as they begin a week-long homestand against the Red Sox. The Blue Jays won 3 of 4 at Fenway 2 weeks ago, outscoring the Red Sox 17-8. The Blue Jays have not set their rotation for the series. Lefty Garrett Crochet will start Tuesday for the Red Sox.

Game #25 - Toronto Blue Jays (12-13) @ Houston Astros (13-11) - game recap

George Springer drove in the Blue Jays only run in a 3-1 loss to the Astros

After another tough loss due to minimal output from a struggling offense and a tough 1st inning from starter Chris Bassitt, the Blue Jays were trying to snap the 4-game losing streak and avoid being swept for the 1st time this season. Bowden Francis got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Vlad was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday (Anthony Santander served as DH tonight.) George Springer was in CF and Addison Barger was in RF. Will Wagner was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays snap the 4-game skid and avoid being swept for the 1st time this season? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Astros opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Christian Walker belted a solo jack to left-center
  • Two batters later, Zach Dezenzo singled scoring Yainer Diaz
  • Four batters later, Dezenzo s scored on a sac fly by Yordan Alvarez
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 4th as George Springer doubled scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • Bowden Francis pitching line: 4.2IP 8H 3R (all earned) 1BB 2K 79 pitches (55 for strikes)
  • Ryan Gusto pitching line: 5.2IP 3H 1R (earned) 1BB 6K 80 pitches (47 for strikes)
  • Josh Hader pitched a scoreless 9th for his 7th save of the season
  • Final score: Astros 3 Blue Jays 1

My Take:

  • Bowden Francis battled through 4.2 innings, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2. Like last night, the Astros did their damage in one inning - the 2nd inning tonight - scoring 3 times on 5 hits and a sac fly. In fact, the Astros got 5 straight hits and scored 2 of the runs before Francis was able to get an out. Not too surprising that Francis got the quick hook given the terrible time the offense has had lately.
  • The bullpen gave the offense a chance, throwing 3.1 shutout innnigs, giving up 5 hits, walking none and striking out 4
  • George Springer drove in the lone Blue Jays run and had an excellent 10-pitch at-bat in the 9th, drawing a 1-out walk. Sadly, he was stranded at 3rd and Ernie Clement at 2nd base (great call by John Schneider picking him to pinch hit) when Alejandro Kirk went down swinging and Myles Straw popped out to end the game. Much like last season, the inability to drive in runners and lack of power is greatly impacting the Blue Jays
  • The Blue Jays were 0-5 with runners in scoring position
  • This season is going a bit worse than last year. After 25 games last season, the Blue Jays were a game above .500 and tonight's loss put them a game below .500
  • Up next, after a off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays head to the Bronx where they will take on the Yankees. who won the season series 7-6, outscoring the Blue Jays 74-64. Ace Jose Berrios starts against Yankees righty Carlos Carrasco

Game #24 - Toronto Blue Jays (12-12) @ Houston Astros (12-11) - game recap

Nathan Lukes hit a solo HR in a 5-1 loss to the Astros

After a brutal shuloss with really nothing positive occurring in the game, the Blue Jays were looking to snap the 3-game skid and even the series in Houston. Daulton Varsho is inching closer to making his season debut as he was promoted to AAA-ball to face pitching closer to what he'll face in the bigs. Chris Bassitt got the start with Alejanndro Kirk behind the plate. Vlad got the half day off as DH with Will Wagner at 1B. Nathan Lukes was in CF. Could the Blue Jays snap the 3-game skid and even the series? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Astros opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Jeremy Pena singled scoring Jose Altuve
  • A batter later, Christian Walker singled scoring Yordan Alvarez
  • A batter after that, Pena scored on a sac fly by Brendan Rodgers
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 3rd as Nathan Lukes whacked a solo blast to right-center
  • The Astros added a run in the bottom of the 6th as Yainer Diaz doubled scoring Walker
  • Chris Bassitt pitching line: 5.2IP 7H 4R (all earned) 1BB 3K 96 pitches (69 for strikes)
  • Ronel Blanco pitching line: 6.2IP 2H 1R (earned) 2BB 3K 93 pitches (58 for strikes)
  • The Astros added a run in the bottom of the 7th as Isaac Paredes hammered a solo bomb to left
  • Final score: Astros 5 Blue Jays 1

My Take

  • Chris Bassitt battled through 5.2 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. The Astros got to him early, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits and a sac fly. He retired 7 m a row at one point. Not the most efficient game for him
  • The bullpen gave up a run on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5 over the last 2.1 innnigs. Yariel Rodriguez barely escaped his inning and got a huge break when Pena got greedy and tried to stretch a single into a double. Mason Fluhaerty struck out the side in the 8th inning.
  • The offense had another rough day with a Nathan Lukes solo blast being the only positive of note. The Blue Jays did not get a base runner past 1st base.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to snap the 4-game skid and avoid being swept for the 1st time this season.Bowden Francis starts against Astros righty Ryan Gusto

Game #23 - Toronto Blue Jays (12-11) @ Houston Astros (11-11) - game recap

George Springer stole a pair of bases in a 7-0 shutout loss to the Astros

After an ugly loss to end the homestand with starter Easton Lucas, who was optioned to AAA-ball (lefty Josh Walker was recalled from AAA-ball) being unable to escape the 2nd inning and the Blue Jays being unable to drive in runners on a consistent basis, the Blue Jays embarked on a tough road trips with stops in Houston and New York, starting in the lone star state tonight. The Astros won the season series 5-2 in 2024, outscoring the Blue Jays 42-15. Kevin Gausman was on the bump with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Alan Roden was in LF, Myles Straw was in CF and George Springer was in RF. Ernie Clement was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays snap the 2-game skid and start the week and road trip on a winning note? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Astros opened the scoring in the bottom of the 5th as Zach Dezenzo doubled scoring Cam Smith
  • A batter later, Jose Altuve doubled scoring Dezenzo and Brendan Rodgers
  • Two batters later, Isaac Paredes singled home Altuve
  • Kevin Gausman pitching line: 6IP 6H 4R (all earned) 4BB 6K 96 pitches (61 for strikes)
  • The Astros added a run in the bottom of the 7th as Yordan Alvarez singled scoring Dezenzo
  • Hunter Brown pitching line: 7IP 2H 0R 1BB 96  pitches (62 for strikes)
  • The Astros added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th as Rodgers doubled scoring Yainer Diaz and Jeremy Pena
  • Final score: Astros 7 Blue Jays 0

My Take:

  • Kevin Gausman battled through 6 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits while walking 4 and striking out 6. He pitched well enough to keep a dangerous Astros lineup off the scoreboard until the 5th inning when the Astros scored 4 times on 5 hits and an intentional walk.Getting 6 innings out of Gausman was important since the Blue Jays bullpen has been busy lately.
  • Lefty Josh Walker got the last 2 innings, giving up 3 more runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Smart of the Blue Jays not to waste any other reliever with the game out of reach
  • Offensively, the Blue Jays did nothing and squandered their best, and pretty much only chance, in the 2nd inning after George Springer led off the inning and stole two bases with none out.
  • The Blue Jays were 0-3 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to snap the 3-game skid and even the series. Chris Bassitt starts against Astros righty Ronel Blanco

Game #22 - Seattle Mariners (12-10) @ Toronto Blue Jays (12-10) - game recap

Tyler Heineman had three hits, drove in a run and threw out a base runner at 2nd base in an 8-3 loss to the Mariners

After an extra-innings loss yesterday due to a brutal 5-run inning from Jacob Barnes, who was DFA'd, the Blue Jays were looking to end the homestand with a win and notch their 3rd series win of the season. Reliever Nick Sandin was placed on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain. Righties Dillon Tate and Paxton Schultz were recslled from AAA-ball. Easton Lucas got the start with Tyler Heineman behind the plate. George Springer was back in the field after the half day off yesterday as DH (Anthony Santander served as DH today). Nathan Lukes was in LF and Addison Barger was in RF. Will Wagner was at the hot corner, Could the Blue Jays end the homestand on a winning note and notch their 3rd series win of the season? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Mariners opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Dylan Moore whacked a solo blast to left-center and into the Blue Jays bullpen
  • Two batters later,  Cal Raleigh hammered a 2- run bomb to left off the basing of the second deck; also scoring Julio Rodriguez
  • The Mariners added a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd as Randy Arozarena singled scoring Ben Williamson and Leo Rivas
  • A batter later,  Mitch Garver singled home Rodriguez
  • Easton Lucas pitching line: 1.2IP 7H 6R (all earned) 2BB 5K 55 pitches (32 for strikes)
  • The Blue jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Tyler Heineman singled scoring Addison Barger
  • Two batters later,  Bo Bichette singled scoring Will Wagner
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 4th on a sac fly by Nathan Lukes that scored George Springer
  • Luis Castillo pitching 5IP 10H 3R (all earned) 2BB 5K 102 pitches (67 for strikes)
  • The Mariners added a pair of runs in the top of the 7th as Rowdy Tellez bashed a 2-run blast to right and into the Blue Jays bullpen; also scoring Garver
  • Final score: Mariners 8 Blue Jays 3

My Take:

  • Easton Lucas was lit up for 6 runs on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5 while recording just 5 outs. The Blue jays don't really have many options in what was supposed to be Max Scherzer's spot in the rotation. The potential options in Buffalo are struggling.  Jake Bloss has given up 19 runs (13 earned) on 19 his and 9 walks over 11  and a third innings.  Neither Lazaro Estrada nor Eric Lauer have impressed.  Alek Manoah and Rickey Tiederman won't be ready until after the all star break. Yariel Rodriguez isn't built up as a starter.  The Blue Jays won't want to have a bullpen day every 5th day since that will lead to overuse and injury. Oh yeah, and next time that spot will come up will be Saturday at Yankee stadium.
  • The bullpen gave up a pair of runs on 5 hits while striking out 13 over the last 7.1 innings. Paxson Schultz threw 4.1 impressive innings, scattering 2 hits and striking out 8. Mason Fluharty retired all four batters he faced.
  • Much like yesterday, the Blue Jays had a good pitcher on the ropes and let him off the hook. Tyler Heineman continued his solid start to the season with 3 hits and and RBI and he threw out a runner at 2B to end the 8th inning. Bo Bichette is back to being the Blue Jays most consistent batter and drove in a run. They had enough base runners and chances to make a game of of it, but they could not deliver. Being 5-21 with runners in scoring position isn't going to win ball games. Not hitting a home run won't do it either.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays hit the road, starting in Houston tomorrow night. The Astros won the season series 5-2 in 2024, outscoring the Blue Jays 42-15. Kevin Gausman starts against Astros righty Hunter Brown

Game #21 - Seattle Mariners (11-10) @ Toronto Blue Jays (12-9) - game recap

Anthony Santander drove in a run and scored a run in a losing effort as the Mariners came from behind to double up the Blue Jatys 8-4 in a 12-inning marathon

After a solid win yesterday on the back of a strong start from Bowden Francis, the Blue Jays were looking for their 4th straight win and 3rd series win of the season. Ace Jose Berrios got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. George Springer got the half day off as DH with Anthony Santander in RF. Myles Straw got the start in CF. Ernie Clement was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 4 games and notch their 3rd series win of the season? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Anthony Santander singled scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • The Mariners took the lead in the top of the 5th as Cal Raleigh doubled scoring Ben Williamson and JP Crawford
  • The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Alejandro Kirk singled home Andres Gimenez
  • Logan Gilbert pitching line: 4.2IP 7H 2R (both earned) 2BB 9K 102 pitches (68 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays retook the lead in the bottom of the 6th as Bo Bichette singled scoring Ernie Clement
  • The Mariners tied the game in the top of the 7th as Williamson drilled a solo blast to left
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 6IP 4H 3R (all earned) 4BB 3K 82 pitches (47 for strikes)
  • The Mariners took the lead in the top of the 12th as Randy Arozarena singled scoring JP Crawford
  • Two batters later Rowdy Tellez hammered a grand slam to the second deck in right; also scoring Arozarena, Raleigh and Luke Raley

  • The Blue jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a ground out hit by George Springer that scored Anthony Santander
  • Final score: Mariners 8 Blue Jays 4 (12 innings)

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios battled through 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hiis while walking 4 and striking out 3.  Berrios had 2 out streaks of 6 outs. He was definitely figuring out what he had working today.
  • The bullpen did well to hold the Mariners off the scoreboard until the 12th inning and poor Jacob Barnes was lit up for 5 runs in that fateful 12th inning, including giving up a grand slam to ex-Blue Jay Rowdy Tellez
  • Offesively, the Blue Jays had plenty of chances but could not push the winning run home. In the 10th and 11th innings, the game-winning run was just 90 feet away with 1 out. Alan Roden popped out and Ernie Clement flew out to right to end the 10th Bo Bichette struck out swinging and Anthony Santander grounded out to end the 11th. Santander drove in a run and scored a run earlier in the game.
  • The Blue Jays were 3-19 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to notch their 3rd series win of the season. Easton Lucas starts against Mariners righty Luis Castillo

Game #19 - Atlanta Braves (5-13) @ Toronto Blue Jays (11-8) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in a pair of runs, including himself on his first HR of the season, in a 3-1 win over the Braves

After a solid win thanks to a 5-run 5th inning thanks to a 2-run HR off the bat of Alan Roden and a 3-run HR off the bat of Anthony Santander,  the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 2nd series win and 1st series win of the season. Chris Bassitt got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate and Ernie Clement was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 2nd series win and 1st series win of the season? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Bo Bichette
  • Chris Bassitt pitching line: 5IP 3H 0R 2BB 10K 90 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 6th as Guerrero Jr hammered a solo bomb to the second deck in left
  • Spencer Strider pitching line: 5IP 5H 2R (both earned) 1BB 5K  97 pitches (58 for strikes)
  • The Blue jays added a run in the bottom of the 7th as Bichette doubled home Myles Straw
  • The Braves got one back in the top of the 9th as Drake Baldwin smacked s solo blast to left
  • Jeff Hoffman got the last 3 outs for his 4th save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 3 Braves 1

My Take:

  • Chris Bassitt threw 5 shutout innings, scattering 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 10. His pitch efficiency wasn't the best, but he struck out a ton of batters and the Braves did a good job of working the count Bassitt continues to turn back the clock. If he keeps pitching like this the rest of the season, he'll command a decent price in free agency.
  • The bullpen gave up a run (a HR off closer Jeff Hoffman) while walking 1 and striking out 9. Combined, Blue Jays pitchers struck out 19 batters. Yimi Garcia struck out all 4 batters he faced and Brandon Little struck out the side in the 6th inning.
  • The two players with the most pressure on them, Vlad (trying to live up to the massive deal he signed) and Bichette (trying to play for a similary lucrative contract) carried the offense today. Vlad annihilated his first home run of the season and drove in a second run. Bo Bichette scored a run and drove in a run.
  • The Blue Jays were 2-8 with runners in scoring position.
  • Up next, after an off-day tomorrow, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 3 games as they welcome their expansion cousins, the Seattle Mariners for an easter weekend series. Bowden Francis starts for the Blue Jays. The Mariners haven't set their rotation for the series yet.

Game #19 Atlanta Barves (5-12) v. Toronto Blue Jays (10-8)

Game #18 - Atlanta Braves (5-12) @ Toronto Blue Jays (10-8) - game recap

Anthony Santander belted a 3-run HR in a 6-3 comeback win over the Braves

After a rough loss to the Braves thanks to the worst start of the season for lefty Easton Lucas, the Blue Jays were looking to even the series. Nathan Lukes was placed on the paternity leave list and Addison Barger was recalled from AAA-ball and was in the lineup in RF. Kevin Gausman got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Will Wagner was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays even the series? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Braves opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Austin Riley whacked a solo blast to the opposite field in right-centet
  • The Blue Jays tied it in the bottom of the 3rd on a fielder's choice hit by Vladimir Guerrero Jr, that scored Alan Roden
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the bottom of the 5th as Roden belted a 2-run jack to right; also scoring Myles Straw
  • Three batters later, Anthony Santander hammered a 3-run bomb to the 2nd deck in right; also scoring Bo Bichette and Guerrero Jr.
  • Spencer Schellenbach pitching line: 4.2IP 6H 6R (all earned) 2BB 3K 86 pitches (56 for strikes)
  • The Braves got one back in the top of the 6th as Matt Olson hammered a solo bomb to dead center
  • Kevin Gausman pitching line: 6IP 6H 2R (both earned) 0BB 6K 98 pitches (68 for strikes)
  • The Braves got one back in the top of the 9th as Ozzie Albies drilled a solo blast to left
  • Final score: Blue Jays 6 Braves 3

My Take:

  • Kevin Gausman threw 6 solid innings, giving up a pair of runs on 6 hits while walking none and striking out 6. He gave up a pair of solo home runs but was able to limit the damage and give the Blue Jays bats a chance to take over the game
  • The bullpen gave up a run on 2 hits, walked 2 batters and struck out 3 batters over the last 3 innings. Nick Sandin retired the only batter he faced
  • The offence did most of the damage in the 5th inning courtesy of a 2-run HR off the bat of Alan Roden (it was his first career HR) and a 3-run bomb from Anthony Santander for his first home home run. It was nice to see Vlad feeling good at the plate He drew 2 walks
  • The Blue Jays were 1-5 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the rubber match of the series for season series bragging rights, to extend the win streak to 2 games and notch their 2nd series win of the season and 1st season series win. Chris Bassitt starts against Braves righty Spencer Strider

Game #18 Atlanta Barves (5-11) v. Toronto Blue Jays (9-8)

Monday, April 14, 2025

Game #17 - Atlanta Braves (5-11) @ Toronto Blue Jays (9-8) - game recap

Tyler Heineman drove in a pair of runs in an 8-4 loss to the Braves

After ending the road trip with a win, the Blue Jays started a week-long home stand against the Atlanta Braves, but the Blue Jays outscored the Braves 13-12. Lefty Easton Lucas got the start with Tyler Heineman behind the plate. Not surprisingly, George Springer was not in the lineup after leaving yesterday's game with a sore wrist after a wild swing. Anthony Santander served as DH with Alan Roden in LF and Nathan Lukes in RF. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 2 games? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Braves opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Sean Murphy hammered a 2-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Matt Olson
  • The Braves added a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd as Austin Riley drilled a 2-run bomb to left-center: also scoring Eli White
  • The Braves added a run in the top of the 5th as Ozzie Albies doubled scoring Nick Allen.  A batter later Riley belted a 3-run jack to left-center also scoring White and Albies
  • Easton Lucas pitching line: 5IP 6H 8R (all earned) 4BB 3K 87 pitches (60 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 6th as Myles Straw hammered a solo bomb to left-center
  • The Blue Jays got a pair back in the bottom of the 8th as Tyler Heineman doubled scoring Alan Roden and Nathan Lukes
  • Grant Holmes pitching line: 7.2IP 2H 3R (all earned) 2BB 4K 94 pitches (78 for strikes)
  • The Blue jays got one back in the bottom of the 9th as Ernie Clement singled home Anthony Santander
  • Final score: Braves 8 Blue Jays 4

My Take:

  • Easton Lucas was lit up for 8 runs on 6 hits while walking 4 and striking out 3 over 5 innings. The Braves took him deep three times for 7 of the runs.  He actually retired the first two batters he faced and four in a row at one point.  The trouble was he didn't have an answer when he got into jams and the Braves made him pay when he was off with his location. A good learning night for the lefty who has done well pitching in Max Scherzer's spot in the rotation. Here's hoping he bounces back against the Mariners in his next scheduled start Sunday.
  • The bullpen threw 4 perfect innings strikiing out 1 batter.
  • The offence did nothing until the 6th inning when Myles Straw went yard for his first home run as a Blue Jay. Tyler Heineman (2-run double) and Ernie Clement (RBI single) drove in the other runs
  • Not sure who has more pressure on them: Bo Bichette, who is playing for a contract in free agency or Vlad, who just signed a 14-year contract that will put him in the top 5 for richest active MLB player. Both players were 0-4 and Bichette struck out 3 times. I suspect the pressure is on Vlad more, which is rich because fans would be all over the front office if the deal wasn't signed and both Vlad and Bo left for greener pastures. The front office will have it's critics still if Vlad struggles to live up to the hefty deal. He has yet to hit a home run this season but is still batting a solid .284
  • The Blue Jays were 2-6 with runners in scoring position\
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to even the series. Kevin Gausman starts against Braves righty Spencer Schwellenbach

Game #17 Atlanta Barves (4-11) v. Toronto Blue Jays (9-7)

Game #16 - Toronto Blue Jays (9-7) @ Baltimore Orioles (6-9) - game recap

Myles Straw drove in the winning run in a 7-6 extra-innings thrilling comeback win by the Blue Jays over the division rival Orioles

After a tough loss thanks to Bowden Francis giing up 5 runs in the 5th and 6th innings combined, the Blue Jays were looking to snap the 2-game skid and end the first road trip of the season with a win. Ace Jose Berrios got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. George Springer got the half day off as DH with Anthony Santander in RF. Davis Schneider was in LF and Miles Straw was in CF. Ernie Clement was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays snap the 2-game skid and end the 1st road trip of the season on a winning note? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Orioles opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on a wild pitch by Jose Berrios that scored Gunnar Henderson
  • The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the 2nd as Alejandro Kirk whacked a solo blast to left-center
  • The Orioles retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Ryan Mountcastle smacked a solo blast to left
  • The Blue jays tied it up in the top of the 3rd as Vladimir Guerrero Jr.  singled scoring Davis Schneider
  • The Orioles retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a fielder's choice hit by Adley Rutschman that scored Henderson
  • Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes
  • The Orioles added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Tyler O'Neill belted a solo jack to left-center
  • George Springer left the game after the top of the 5th street he appeared to injure his wrist swinging the bat
  • Cade Povich pitching line: 4.2IP 7H 2R (both earned) 1BB 2K 76 pitches (48 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got a run back in the top of the 6th as Myles Straw singled scoring Ernie Clement
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 5IP 7H 4R (all earned) 1BB 6K 86 pitches (56 for strikes)
  • The Orioles added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a fielding error by Guerrero Jr on a ball hit by Jackson Holliday that scored Heston Kjerstad and Mountcastle
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 8th as Kirk doubled scoring Andres Gimenez
  • Three batters later, Tyler Heineman scored on a ground out hit by Schneider
  • A batter later, Bo Bichette singled home Clement
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 10th on an infield single by Straw that scored Gimenez
  • Final score: Blue Jays 7 Orioles 6 (10 innings)

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios battled through 5 innings,  giving up 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6. The Orioles were able to tack on runs in each of the first 4 innings and took Berrios yard twice.  Berrios also uncorked a wild pitch. He also picked off a runner at 2nd base for the second straight start to escape the 3rd inning jam. The Blue Jays offense was able to get him off the hook for a no decision.
  • The bullpen was solid when it needed to be. It gave up a pair of runs in the 6th, but that was a result of a fielding error by Vlad on a play he should have made. Brandon Little and Yimi Garcia both retired every batter they faced. Jeff Hoffman channeled his inner Trevor Hoffman with 2 solid innings and ended the game with 2 straight K's.
  • The bottom haldf of the lineup did most of the damage. Myles Straw had 2 RBI, including the game-winning run in the 10th. Ernie Clement was 4-5 on the day and scored twice, and Davis Schneider knocked in a run and scored a run. Alejandro Kirk hit his first HR of the season and had a very big RBI double to start the 3-run rally in the 8th
  • Every Blue Jays starter except George Springer, who left the game after injuring himself on a hard swing, had at least one hit.
  • The Blue Jays were 7-20 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays return home to start a weeklong homestand starting tomorrow night against the Braves, who who the season series last season, but the Blue Jays outscored the Braves 13-12. Easton Lucas starts against Braves righty Grant Holmes

Game #16 Toronto Blue Jays (8-7) @ Baltimore Orioles (6-8)

Saturday, April 12, 2025

Game #15 - Toronto Blue Jays (8-7) @ Baltimore Orioles (6-8) - game recap

Anthony Santander hit his first home run as a Blue Jay against his former team in a losing effort as the Orioles came from behind to edge the Blue Jays 5-4

After the first rainout of the season, the Blue Jays moved to the 3rd and final stop of the season-opening road trip and a rematch with the Orioles. The two squads split the 4 games of the season-opening series in Toronto with the Orioles outscoring the Blue Jays 24-18. Bowden Francis got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Vlad was back in the lineup and at 1B after missing the last game to nurse an ailing wrist. The rest of the lineup was the same as Thursday's extra innings loss in Boston. Could the Blue Jays start the abbreviated weekend with a win? Here is today's game recap

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled scoring Bo Bichette
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 2nd as Bichette singled home Nathan Lukes
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 4th as Anthony Santander hammered a solo bomb to right-center
  • Tomoyuki Sugano pitching line: 4.2IP 8H 3R (all earned) 2BB 0K 73 pitches (45 for strikes)
  • The Orioles got a pair back in the bottom of the 5th as Heston Kjerstad hammered a solo bomb to dead center; also scoring Cedric Mullins
  • The Orioles tied it up in the bottom of the 6th as Adley Rutschman belted a solo jack to right-center
  • Three batters later,  Mullins tripled scoring Jordan Westburg and Ryan O'Hearn
  • Bowden Francis pitching line: 5.2IP 4H 5R (all earned) 2BB 5K 96 pitches (53 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the 7th on a double play ball hit by Bichette that scored Lukes
  • Felix Bautista pitched a scoreless 9th for his 1st save of the season
  • Final score: Orioles 5 Blue Jays 4

My Take

  • Bowden Francis retired the first 13 batters he faced before the Orioles got to him to the tune of 5 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. Was Francis trying to pitch too fine knowing the potential of what was happening? The Orioles took him deep twice and capped off the damage with a triple. Pitching from the stretch is different from pitching with no runners on, although Francis uses a stance more similar to a reliever, standing sideways to the bitter as opposed to facing the bitter dead on.  Francis has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the past few seasons.
  • The bullpen did its part to give the Blue Jays a chance to mount a comeback, limiting the Orioles to a hit and a hit batter over the last 2.1 innings. Mason Fluharty retired every batter he faced.
  • The offense jumped on starter Tomoyuki Sugano early, scoring a run in three of the first four innings. Anthony Santander homered for the first time in a Blue Jays uniform back in his old stomping grounds at Oriole Park in Camden Yards. Bo Bichette scored a run and drove in a run. Vlad also contributed an RBI double. The trouble was after they knocked Sugano out of the game, the Blue Jays produced one more run in the 7th, but could not tie the game with Bichette striking out to end the game.
  • Quirky play of the day: a fly ball out by Santander that appeared to advance Vlad and Bichette on the play turned to to be a double play because Vlad left 1st base before Orioles RF Tyler O'Neill had caught the ball
  • The Blue Jays were 4-13 with runners in scoring position. The Orioles were 2-3 with runners in scoring position and that was the difference maker in today's loss
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to end the road trip with a win and escape Baltimore with a series split. Ace Jose Berrios starts against Orioles lefty Cade Povich

After eking out an extra innings win on a sac fly, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 4 games and compete their first sweep of the season. Chris Bassitt got the start with Tyler Heineman behind the plate.  Vlad got the full day off to rest a sore wrist. Alan Roden was in LF and George Springer was in RF. Anthony Santander got the half day off as DH could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 4 games and complete their first sweep of the season? Here is today's game recap.

  • The Red Sox tied it in the bottom half of the inning as Duran singled scoring Blake Sobal
  • Four batters later, David Hanilton scored on a ground out hit by Story
  • Final score: Red Sox 4 Blue Jays 3 (10 innings)

My Take:

  • Chris Bassitt battled through 5.2 innings, giving up a run on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5. Bassitt retired 8 in a row and made it through the 1st 5 innings relatively easily before running into trouble in the 6th inning that just seemed to snowball. Bassitt is showing age doesn't matter as he continues to turn back the clock
  • The bullpen had a rough day, blowing an extra innings lead. A day after saving the extra innings game with ease, Nick Sandolin gave up 2 runs, hit 2 batters, gave up the game-tying single on his second pitch and was walked off recording just a single out (on the winning run). None of the relievers was able to get every batter out that they faced.
  • Offensively, Tyler Heineman, who was 3-4 and the only Blue Jay with multiple hits, had a clutch hit to tie the ball game, the Blue Jays took advantage of some sloppy Red Sox defense for the 2nd Blue Jays run and retook the lead in extra innings on a sac fly to plate thr ghost runner
  • Every Blue Jays starter except Ernie Clement and Nathan Lukes reached base at least once and all but Clement, Lukes, Will Wagner and Andres Gimenez had a hit
  • The Blue Jays were 1-9 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays head to Baltimore for the 3rd and final stop on the season-opening road trip. The O's and Blue Jays split the 4 games of the season-opening series with the Orioles outscoring the Blue Jays 24-18. Bowden Francis starts against Orioles righty Tomoyuki Sugano

-Game #13 - Toronto Blue Jays (8-5) @ Boston Red Sox (6-7) - game recap

Kevin Gausman threw 8 strong innings in a 2-1 extra-innings win over the Red Sox

After a second straight win over the Red Sox on the strength of a solid start from Easton Lucas, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 3 games and notch their first series win of the season. Kevin Gausman got the start with Alejandro kirk behind the plate. Vlad got the half day off as DH with Will Wagner at 1B. Andres Gimenez was back in the lineup at 2B after the complete day off yesterday (he did come into yesterday's game as a defensive replacement. Anthony Santander was in LF and Nathan Lukes was in CF. Could the Blue Jays extend the win streak to 3 games and notch their 1st series win of the season? here is tonoght's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on a ground out hit by Will Wagner that scored Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • The Red Sox tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on a sac fly by Alex Bregman that scored Jarren Duran
  • Tanner Houck pitching line: 6.2IP 5H 1R (earned) 2BB 2K 90 pitches (55 for strikes)
  • Kevin Gausmam pitching line: 8IP 4H 1R (unearned) 0BB 10K 93 pitches (68 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 11th on a sac fly by Bo Bichette that scored Ernie Clement
  • Nick Sandlin pitched a perfect 11th for his 1st save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 2 Red Sox 1 (11 innings)

My Take:

  • Kevin Gausman was outstanding today, fiting 8 innings (the most by a starter this season), giving up an unearned run on 4 hits while walking none and striking out 10.  Gausman had outstreaks of 9 and 8 batters. Impressively, he had thrown 93 pitches in those 8 innings and probably could have pitched one more too
  • The bullpen allowed just a walk in the last three innings while striking out 3. Jeff Hoffman threw multiple innings for the first time this season and was credited with the win
  • It was a quirky game offenseively with all 3 runs in the game scored on outs (2 sac flies and a ground out)\
  • Vlad and Andres Gimenez had five of the Blue Jays 6 hits
  • The Blue Jays were 1-9 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 4 games and to complete their first  series sweep of the season. Chris Baaasitt starts against Red Sox righty Walker Buehler

Game #12 - Toronto Blue Jays (7-5) @ Boston Red Sox (6-8) - game recap

Bo Bichette drove in 3 runs in a 6-1 win over the Red Sox

After a solid victory over the Bosox thanks to George Springer's 3RBI, 1 run score night and a strong 7-inning effort from ace Jose Berrios, the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to 2 games. Easton Lucas got the start with Tyler Heineman behind the plate. Myles Straw was in CF. Ernie Clement was at the hot corner and Davis Schneider was at 2B. Could the Blue Jays make it 2 straight wins? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 6th as George Springer hammered a solo bomb to dead center
  • Four batters later, Tyler Heineman singled scoring Davis Schneider
  • Two batters later, Bo Bichette singled home Myles Straw and Heineman
  • Garrett Crochet pitching line: 5.2IP 5H 4R (1 earned) 4BB 5K 107 pitches (65 for strikes)
  • Easton Lucas pitching line: 5.1IP 3H 0R 1BB 8K 82 pitches (57 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox got one back in the bottom of the 7th as Ceddanne Rafaela singled scoring  Romy Gonzalez
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the 8th as Bichette singled scoring Straw
  • Two batters later, Heineman scored on a ground out hit by Anthony Santander
  • Final score: Blue Jays 6 Red Sox 1

My Take:

  • Easton Lucas was excellent in his second career start, throwing 5.1 shutout innings, scattering 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 8. Lucas retired the first eight batters he faced and never really got into any real trouble. With the way he was dealing, i might have let him finish the inning instead of yanking him the first batter that got on in the 6th inning with a 4- run cushion and the Blue Jays playing another week before the next off-day.
  • The bullpen gave up a run on 5 hits while walking none and striking out 4 over the las 3.2 innings. The two lefties, Brandon Little and Mason Fluharty both retired every batter they faced. It was great to see Fluharty have some success after a pair of brutal appearances to start the season.
  • The offence did most of its damage in the 6th, starting with a bomb off the red-hot bat of George Springer and capped off by a 2-run single from Bo Bichette. They also added 2 insurance runs in the 8th inning
  • Springer is playing like he's half his age
  • The Blue Jays were 4-12 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 3-games and notch their 1st series win of the season. Kevin Gausman starts against Red Sox righty Tanner Houck

Game #11 - Toronto Blue Jays (6-5) @ Boston Red Sox (6-5) - game recap

George Springer drove in 3 runs and scored another in a 6-2 win over the Red Sox

After a rough, humbling series in NY against the Mets, the Blue Jays were looking to snap the 3-game skid as they continued the road trip in Boston. Vlad and the team took care of a huge distraction, inking a 14-year deal that will keep Vlad in a Blue Jays uniform for the better part of the remainder of his career for a mere $500 million. The next big priority has to be inking Bo Bichette, who is slated to become a free agent at the end of the season. Ace Jose Berrios got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Alan Roden was in LF, Nathan Lukes was in CF and George Springer was in RF. Anthony Santander served as DH. Will Wagner was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays snap the 3-game skid? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 3rd on a sac fly by Andres Gimenez that scored Bo Bichette
  • A batter later, George Springer singled scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • The Red Sox got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a sac fly by Rafael Devers that scored Ceddanne Rafaela
  • The Blue jays added a run in the top of the 5th as Springer singled scoring Gimenez
  • Richard Fitts pitching line: 6IP 6H 3R (all earned) 4BB 4K 102 pitches (67 for strikes)
  • The Blue jays added a run in the top of the 7th as Springer singled scoring Gimenez
  • Two batters later, Will Wagner singled home Springer
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 7IP 3H 1R (earned) 3BB 2K 88 pitches (55 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox got one back in the bottom of the 8th as Triston Casas singled scoring Rafaela
  • The Blue jays added a run in the top of the 9th as Nathan Lukes singled scoring Anthony Santander. Wagner was thrown out at third on the play for the 3rd out and it was ruled he was tagged ouylt before Springer crossed the plate, thus erasing a second insurance run
  • Final score: Blue Jays 6 Red So 2

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios threw 7 strong innings, giving up a run on 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2. After giving up a leadoff double to start the game, Berrios retired the next 6 red Sox batters. Then he erased the walk he allowed to start the 3rd inning with a pickoff at 2nd base. Berrios was efficient too with just 70 pitches thrown to start inning #7. The Blue jays were smart to lock him up through the 2028 season.
  • The bullpen bent, but it didn't break, Trevor Hoffman retired every batter he faced, but Yimi Garcia wasn't as sharp on a cold night in Boston\
  • Offensively, it was the George Springer show, The wily veteran drove in three runs and scored another. Vladdy, soon to  be the richest player on the team, was 2-4 with a run scored.
  • Every Blue Jays batter except Alan Roden and Alejandro Kirk either scored a run or drove in a run and all but Roden and Andres Gimenez had a hit
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 2 games. Easton Lucas starts against Red Sox lefty Garrett Crochet
