Game #59 - Baltimore Orioles (38-20) @ Toronto Blue Jays (28-31) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a solo HR in a 7-2 loss to the Orioles

After a solid win over the Pirates thanks to a clutch 2-run double from Daniel Vogelbach and a gutsy start from Chris Bassitt.  The Blue jays were looking to make it two straight wins.  Kevin Gausman got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate.  Vlad was back at 1B and IKF was at the hot corner. Kevin Kiermaier was in CF and Daulton Varsho was in LF. Davis Schneider got the start at 2B. Could THE Blue Jays make it two straight wins?  here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Orioles opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Anthony Santander whacked a 2-run blast to right; also scoring Ryan O'Hearn
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 2nd as Daulton Varsho tripled scoring George Springer
  • The Orioles added a run in the top of the 4th as Colton Cowser doubled scoring Santander
  • A batter later, Austin Hays belted a 2-run jack to left; also scoring Cowser
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hammered a solo bomb to dead center
  • The Orioles added a run in the top of the 7th as Hays whacked a solo blast to the opposite field in right-center
  • Kevin Gausman pitching line: 6.1IP 6H 6R (all earned) 1BB 3K 97 pitches (67 for strikes)
  • Grayson Rodriguez pitching line: 6.IP 7H 2R (1 earned) 0BB 4K 86 pitches (66 for strikes)
  • The Orioles added a run in the top of the 9th as Ramon Urias whacked a solo blast to left-center
  • Final score: Orioles 7 Blue Jay 2

My Take:

  • Kevin Gausman threw 6.1 innings, giving up 6 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. The Oriolles took him deep twice. Gausman retired seven in a row at one point.
  • The bullpen gave up a crucial, specifically Ryan Burr, gave up a back-breaking solo HR in the 9th that really put the game out of reach. Brendon Little wasn't much better, allowing a pair of hits in an inning of work. I suppose this was a good game to get those two relievers, who aren't going to be trusted in a higher leverage situation (Burr may be at a later point once he has shown John Schneider and co. a good outing or two)
  • Offensively, the Blue Jays were fortunate on one of their runs. Daulton Varsho took full advantage of a horrible throw from Orioles SS Gunnar Henderson, who had plenty of time to throw out George Springer and end the inning
  • A suggested use for the home run jacket: give it to the player of the game when they win. It would give the team something to play for
  • The Blue Jays were 0-6 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to even the series (and season series). The Blue Jays have not named a starter yet. It is likely to be a bullpen day with Bowden Francis a possibility to come off the IL to make the start. Righty Corbin Burnes starts for the Orioles
