Game #113 - Toronto Blue Jays (63-50) @ Boston Red Sox (57-54) - game recap

Davis Schneider was 4-5 with 4 RBI and a run scored in a 13-1 rout over the Red Sox

After two statement wins over the Red Sox and their first series win of the season after losing seven straight games VS. the pesky division rivals,  the Blue Jays were looking to extend the win streak to three games and compete their seventh series sweep of the season. Chris Bassitt got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Vlad got the complete day off with Brandon Belt at 1B. George Springer got the half day off as DH with Cavan Biggio in RF. Could the Blue Jays make it three straight wins and compete their seventh series sweep of the season? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • Brennan Bernardino pitching line: 1IP 2H 0R 0BB 2K 24 pitches (17 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd as Matt Chapman doubled scoring Brandon Belt and George Springer
  • A batter later, Cavan Biggio doubled home Chapman
  • Two batters later, Kevin Kiermaier singled scoring Biggio
  • The Blue Jays added a pair of runs in the top of the 4th as Davis Schneider hammered a 2-run bomb to left center,  over the green monster and tight out of Fenway Park; also scoring Whit Merrifield
  • The Red Sox got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Triston Casas smacked a solo blast to right-center
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 5th as Kiermaier singled scoring Biggio
  • Two batters later, Alejandro Kirk scored on a groundout hit by Merrifield
  • Two batters later, Schneider was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Kiermaier
  • A batter later, Paul DeJong scored on a sac fly by Springer
  • A batter after that, Chapman singled scoring Belt
  • Kiermaier left the game in the bottom of the 6th after scraping his arm on a screen in the center field wall while making a leaping catch
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 7th as Schneider singled scoring Belt
  • Chris Bassitt pitching line: 7IP 7H 1R (earned) 3BB 6K 96 pitches (65 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the 8th as Daulton Varsho tripled scoring Kirk
  • Final score: Blue Jays 13 Red Sox 1

My Take:

  • Chris Bassitt fired 7 solid innings, allowing a run on 7 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6. He pitched in and out of jams most of the day, but was never really ask that stressed. He made one mistake in the 4th when Triston Casas took him deep. Most importantly, Bassitt gave the z Blue. Jays 7 innings to save the overworked bullpen a bit. Bassitt retired the final 6 batters he faced.
  • The bullpen allowed a hit while striking out 2 in the last 2 innings of the game. Jay Jackson will almost certainly be getting a nice payday in free agency this winter
  • The story of the day was the offense. Davis Schneider continued to make Fenway Park his personal playground with a 4-5 day, 4 RBI and a run scored on a massive home run that left Fenway Park completely.  Heck,  he even drove in a run getting hit by a pitch (he was fine and stayed in the game)
  • Every Blue Jays starter except Whit Merrifield had at least one hit, all but Alejandro Kirk and Paul DeJong drove in a run and every starter scored at least once
  • The Blue jays were 7-14 with runners in scoring position
  • All three series between the Blue Jays and Red Sox have been series sweeps
  • Up next, the Blue Jays head to Cleveland for a 4-game series against the Indians. Last season, the Indians won 5 of 7 meetings in the season series, outscoring the Blue Jays 37-22. Hyun-Jin Ryu starts against Indians righty Gavin Williams.
