Game #43 - New York Yankees (25-20) @ Toronto Blue Jays (25-18) - game recap

Chris Bassitt threw seven shutout innings in a 3-0 shutout win over the Yankees in 10 innings.

After last night's loss thanks to a late Aaron Judge HR, the Blue Jays were trying to snap the 2-game skid and prevent losing their 4th series of the season. Chris Bassitt got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. George Springer was back in the field after DH'ing yesterday. Vlad got the complete day off with Brandon Belt at 1B. Daulton Varsho was in CF and Whit Merrifield was at 2B. Santiago Espinal got the start at 2B and Danny Jansen served as DH. Could the Blue Jays snap the 2-game skid and prevent their 4th series loss of the season? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • Gerritt Cole pitching line: 6IP 7H 0R 2BB 6K 104 pitches (70 for strikes)
  • Chris Basitt pitching line: 7IP 3H 0R 1BB 7K 97 pitches (66 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays walked it off in the bottom of the 10th as Danny Jansen drilled a 3-run bomb to left-center; also scoring Whit Merrifield and Cavan Biggio
  • Final score: Blue Jays 3 Yankees 0 (10 innings)
My Take:

  • What a gutsy effort from Chris Bassitt. Seven shutout innings, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out seven, all while under the weather with a sinus infection. By all rights, he should have been scratched from tonight's start and it should have been a bullpen day. Instead, Bassitt went out there and almost outpitched Yankees ace Gerritt Cole. Bassitt was even able to throw an extra inning more than Cole, who was done after 6 innings,
  • The bullpen did enough to give the Blue Jays bats a chance to come through, although they issued 4 walks over the three innings of work.
  • The offense had plenty of chances, but could not drive in any runs until Danny Jansen went yard in the 10th inning. The Blue Jays were an abysmal 1-17 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 2 games and split the 4-game series against the Yankees. Jose Berrios starts against Yankees lefty Nestor Cortez.
