Game #6 - Toronto Blue Jays (3-3) @ Houston Astros (1-5) - game recap

Davis Schneider hit a clutch 2-run HR with the Blue Jays down to their last strike in a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Astros

After a horrendous showing yesterday in a 10-0 no-hit loss, the Blue Jays were looking to bounce back and continue their trend of winning one, losing one, etc. Ace Jose Berrios got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Bo Bichette was back in the lineup at SS after missing the last couple of days with neck spasms. Ernie Clement remained in the lineup and was at the hot corner tonight. Davis Schneider got the start in LF. Isiah Kiner-Falefa was at 2B. Could the Blue Jays even the series? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Astros took the lead in the bottom of the 4th as Jose Altuve hammered a solo bomb to left
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 6IP 6H 1R (earned) 1BB 2K 88 pitches (50 for strikes)
  • Framber Valdez pitching line: 7.2IP 6H 0R 0BB 5K 85 pitches (61 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 9th as Davis Schneider hammered a 2-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Daulton Varsho
  • Final score: Blue Jays 2 Astros 1

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios did all he could to keep the Blue Jays in this one. He made one bad mistake that Jose Abreu crushed, but that was the only run he gave up. Berrios allowed the one run on 6 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2. He got a massive break in the 6th inning when a batted ball hit Jose Altuve to end the 6th inning
  • The bullpen threw three shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks. The Blue Jays caught 2 more huge breaks, once in the 8th when Alejandro Kirk picked off Altuve at 3rd base to end the inning and once in the 9th when Jake Meyers fell down trying to steal 2nd for the 2nd out of the inning.
  • Davis Schneider came through with a huge clutch home run with the Blue Jays down to their last strike. Surely he has to be in the lineup for tomorrow's finale? Maybe at 2B, his natural position?
  • The Blue Jays were 0-1 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays go for their first multi-game win streak and 1st series win of the season. Chris Bassitt starts against Astros righty Cristian Javier
