Game #18 - New York Yankees (12-6) @ Toronto Blue Jays (10-8) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in a pair of runs in a 5-4 comeback win over the Yankees

After a solid win yesterday thanks to the the offensive efforts of Alejandro Kirk and stellar pitching, the Blue Jays were looking for their 4th straight win and 3rd series win of the season. Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson were reinstated from the 15-day IL. Mitch White was DFA'd and Nate Pearson was optioned back to AAA-ball to make room on the roster. It may be the end of the road for White as a Blue Jay. If so, he finishes his Blue Jay career wuth a 1-6 record and a 7.26ERA in 24 games (8 starts) over parts of 3 seasons. Yusei Kikuchi got the start with Danny Jansen behind the plate, who was making his regular season debut after coming off the IL yesterday. Daulton Varsho was in CF and Davis Schneider was in LF. Ernie Clement got the start at the hot corner and Isiah Kiner-Falefa was at 2B. Could the Blue Jays make it 4 straight wins and 3 series wins? Here is tonight's game recap

Game Highlights:

  • The Yankees opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd as Jose Trevino singled scoring Giancarlo Stanton
  • The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd on a sac fly by Justin Turner that scored Daulton Varsho
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the bottom of the 4th as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled scoring Ernie Clement and Varsho
  • Carlos Rodon pitching line: 4IP 5H 3R (all earned) 4BB 5K 101 pitches (62 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 6th on a stolen base by Isiah Kiner-Falefa that scored Clement. Gleyber Torres was charged with a missed catch error on the play
  • Three batters later, Bo Bichette singled home Kiner-Falefa
  • Yusei Kikuchi pitching line: 6IP 4H 1R (earned) 1BB 9K 94 pitches (62 for strikes)
  • The Yankees got one back in the top of the 7th on a ground out hit by Trevino that scored Torres
  • A batter later, Alex Verdugo scored on a sac fly by Oswaldo Cabrera
  • The Yankees got one back in the top of the 9th on a ground out hit by Trevino that scored Torres
  • Jordan Romano got the last 3 outs for his 1sr save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 5 Yankees 4

My Take:

  • Yusei Kikuchi eas solid again, giving up a run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 9. Unfortunately, he probably left the game a tad early due to an oblique injury. Then again, he was at 94 pitches at the end of the 6th, so he might have been done regardless. The Blue Jays won't take any chances and will put him on the IL if necessary. Hopefully he doesn't miss significant time
  • The bullpen gave up three runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batter. All three runs were scored on outs. Jordan Romano got into a jam in the 9th inning, but pitched his way out of it
  • Offensively, Vlad drove in a pair, Isiah Kiner-Falefa created another run with some good hustle on the basepaths that forced an error and later scored on a base hit by Bo. Oh, and Justin Turner continues to make Ross Atkins look like an absolute genius with his play.
  • Every Blue Jays starter except Davis Schneider reached base at least once and all but Schneider and Kiner-Falefa had a hit
  • The Blue Jays were 3-13 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 5 games and complete their 1st sweep of the season. Kevin Gausman starts against Yankrrd righty and ex-Blue Jays ace Marcus Stroman
