Game #7 - Toronto Blue Jays (4-3) @ New York Yankees (4-3) - game recap

Alejandro Kirk had a pair of hits in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Yankees. It was the second shutout loss in three days. The Blue Jays were shut out 3 times all last season

After a solid win on the back of a three-homer night from Vlad and a strong effort from the bullpen, the Blue Jays were looking to with the first road series of the year. Kevin Gausman got the start and was looking for his first win in a Blue Jays uniform. Teoscar Hernandez was placed on the 10-day IL  with an oblique strain and Gasuke Katoh was recalled. Alejandro Kirk was behind the plate. Cavan Biggio got the start at 2B and Santiago Espinal was at the hot corner (Matt Chapman had the complete day off). Bradley Zimmer was in CF with George Springer getting the half day off as DH. Could the Blue Jays win the first road series of the season? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game #67 NY Yankees (36-32) @ Toronto Blue Jays (33-34) - game recap

Reese McGuire was 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI in an 8-4 loss to the Yankees

After being robbed of a victory by two brutal calls in the 9th (Vlad being called out diving back into 3rd base and a foul ball being called when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. clearly swung and missed) the Blue Jays were right back at it trying to salvage a game in this series. It was a bullpen day with Steven Matz on the IL after testing positive for Covid. He'll miss at least two starts as he must remain on the list at least 10 days. TJ Zeuch served as the opener tonight. Rafael Dolis, who left last night's game with no sensation in his hand, was placed on the 10-day IL with middle finger strain. Teoscar Hernandez was added to the paternity list. Outfilder Jared Hoying had his contract selected. Carl Edwards Jr. was transferred to the 60-day IL. Vlad got the half day off, serving as the DH with Rowdy Tellez at 1B. Cavan Biggio was in RF and Santiago Espinal was at the hot corner after Joe Panik's adventure last night. Reese McGuire was behind the plate. Could the Blue Jays snap the three game skid? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Yankees opened the scoring in the top of the 1st on a fielder's choice hit by Miguel Andujar and ensuing fielding error by TJ Zeuch that scored Gio Urshela
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit into a triple play in the bottom half of the inning
  • The Yankees added a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd as Urshela hammered a 2-run bomb to left; also scoring Giancarlo Stanton
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Reese McGuire doubled scoring Santiago Espinal
  • Two batters later, McGuire scored on a ground out by Bo Bichette
  • TJ Zeuch pitching line: 5H 3R (2 earned) 2BB 2K 65 pitches (44 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the 5th on a ground out by Marcus Semien that scored Espinal
  • Michael King 4.1IP 5H 3R (all earned) 2BB 1K 60 pitches (41 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays took the lead in the bottom of the 6th as Randal Grichuk singled home Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • The Yankees added a run in the top of the 7th as Stanton hammered a 2-run bomb to right; also scoring Rougned Odor
  • Five batters later, Chris Gittens singled home Gary Sanchez and Urshela
  • The Yankees added a run in the 9th on a sac fly by Gittens that scored Sanchez
  • Final Score: Yankees 8 Blue Jays 4

My Take:

  • TJ Zeuch had an adventurous day on the mound, throwing the ball into center field for a run. He got lucky that the Yankees didn't do more damage in the 2nd inning when Brett Gardener was thrown out at home. He gave up a mammoth 2-run bomb in the 3rd to Jays killer Gio Urshela
  • One day after the Blue Jays managed zero runs in the 1st inning on a 2nd and 3rd situation with no outs with Vlad being at fault for straying too far on a comebacker and then not getting back to 3rd base in time, the same situation arose in the 3rd inning. This time Vlad was at the plate and hit into a triple play and 2 of the outs were at 3rd base. Poor Vlad must be having nightmares
  • Fundamentally, the Blue Jays haven't been sharp. Even though Charlie Montoyo has been sharing the DH duties, perhaps the players are getting tired or it's a learning curve thing
  • Anthony Castro imploded tonight, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits in 0.1 innings
  • Vlad extended his hitting streak to 8 games with a single in the 6th.
  • The Blue Jays were 2-6 with runners in scoring position.
  • Up next, the Blue Jays take on the Oroles. Last season, the Blue Jays were 8-2 vs. the Orioles, outscoring them 58-50. Friday will be a battle of the lefties with Robbie Ray pitching against Orioles lefty Bruce Zimmerman

Game #11 NY Yankees (5-6) @ Toronto Blue Jays (5-6) - game recap

Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched into the 7th as the Blue Jays knocked off the Yankees 7-3

After a tough loss to Yankees ace Gerritt Cole, who retired the last fifteen Blue Jays batters he faced, the Blue Jays were looking to even the series with a win, sending their own ace Hyun-Jin Ryu to the mound. Danny Jansen was back behind the plate after the night off yesterday. The Blue Jays were facing a pitcher, Jameson Taillon, who missed almost two seasons after a complex TJ surgery, much like Tim Mayza endured. I have a lot of respect for athletes that persevere through such a lengthy rehab and make it back to their former glory. Only Joe Panik and Randal Grichuk have ever faced this pitcher. The rest of the lineup remains the same as yesterday. Can Ryu stop the bleeding and get his team back to winning? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Josh Palacios singled home Randal Grichuk and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 3rd on a sac fly by Randal Grichuk that scored Bo Bichette
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Marcus Semien whacked a solo shot to left
  • Two batters later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled scoring Bichette
  • Jameson Taillon pitching line: 3.2IP 8H 5R (all earned) 1BB 3K 84 pitches (59 for strikes)
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom of the 5th as Rowdy Tellez smash a solo bomb to right-center
  • The Yankees got one back in the top of the 7th on a groundout by Rougned Odor that scored Gary Sanchez
  • Hyun-Jin Ryu pitching line: 6.2IP 4H 1R (unearned) 1BB 7K 95 pitches (68 for strikes)
  • The Yankees got a pair back in the top of the 8th as Giocarlo Stanton singled scoring DJ Le Mahieu and Clint Frazier
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the bottom half of the inning as Palacios scored on a sac fly by Bichette
  • Bichette and Guerrero Jr. both made outstanding plays on the final out
  • Final score: Blue Jays 7 Yankees 3

My Take:

  •  Hyun-Jin Ryu had his third straight quality start, allowing an unearned run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 7. Ryu allowed 2 base runners through five innings and retired 11 in a row at one point. He was efficient as well, averaging about 12 pitches an inning. Can't stress enough what a great signing Ryu has turned out to be
  • Rowdy Tellez doubled his offensive output for the season, getting his second hit and home run on a solo shot.
  • Every Blue Jays starter reached base at least once and all but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Danny Jansen had at least one hit
  • Up next, the Blue Jays wrap up the series and homestand with a matinee vs. the Yankees. Blue Jays righty Ross Stripling goes up against Yankees righty Corey Kluber. The winner tomorrow will move out of the basement in the AL East standings. After tonight's games, there is a four-way tie for 2nd with the Yankees, Blue Jays, Rays and Orioles all having identical 5-6 records. The Red Sox, after being last in the AL East last season, are currently 1st in the AL East with a record of 7-3

#121 - New York Yankees (76-41) at Toronto Blue Jays (49-71)

Sunday, August 11, 2019 | 1:07 pm
Rogers Centre | Toronto, Ontario

Masahiro Tanaka (7-6, 4.93, 1.32) vs. Trent Thornton (4-7, 5.55, 1.53)

PREAMBLE:

The Blue Jays, having won the past two games, look to secure a series win in the finale of a four-game series against the Evil Empire.

In a stunning development, we have two actual starting pitchers going up against each other in today's game.  Yes, stop the presses and put Wince on defibrillator-watch.  Trent Thornton takes the ball for the Jays as he faces off against Masahiro Tanaka, who is 3-3, 3.70 in eight Rogers Centre starts.

Game #124 New York Yankees (55-69) @ Toronto Blue Jays (78-46) - game recap

Greg Bird hit a first inning grand slam as the Yankees routed the Blue Jays 10-2 to complete the series sweep

The Blue Jays faced old teammate JA Happ today, who has had produced three quality starts since the trade to the Bronx bombers. Ryan Borucki was looking to bounce back after a rough outing where he was knocked around for 4 runs on 6 hits and he walked 4 batters. He had a foot blister that may have affected his delivery. Could he bounce back and did the Blue Jays get to Happ and the mighty Yankees bullpen? Here is today's game recap.

Game #122 Toronto Blue Jays (55-67) @ New York Yankees (76-46) - game recap

Giancarlo Stanton launched a solo HR just before the skies opened up ending the game early as the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays 7-5

There was clarity to the stability of the team before this one started. Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins announced that John Gibbons will remain the Blue Jays manager until the season ends with a decision made on his future during the off-season. Russell Martin returned behind the plate after filling in at third base for a few games after Yangervis Solarte went down with an oblique strain. Would the weather hold off tonight? Here is today's game recap.
