Game #59 - Toronto Blue Jays (32-27) @ New York Mets (30-29) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in the winning run in the 9th as the Blue Jays came from behind to edge the Mets 2-1

After a solid win over the Mets on the back of a huge 7.2 inning effort from father-to-be Chris Bassitt, who left his start to race back to Toronto to witness the birth of his child, the Blue Jays were going for their third straight win and 11th series win of the season. As expected, Bassitt was placed on the paternity leave list and Jay Jackson was recalled to take his place. Jose Berrios got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. The Blue Jays used the same lineup as yesterday's win. Could the Blue Jays make it three straight wins and eleven series wins? Here is today's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Mets opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as Daniel Vogelbach doubled scoring Starling Marte
  • The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the 6th as Alejandro Kirk singled scoring Brandon Belt
  • Tylor Megill pitching line: 5.1IP 5H 1R (earned) 5BB 5K 103 pitches (58 for strikes)
  • Jose Berrios pitching line: 6IP 4H 1R (earned) 3BB 6K 86 pitches (58 for strikes)
  • Manager John Schneider was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the 9th
  • Two pitches later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled scoring George Springer
  • Erik Swanson pitched a scoreless 9th for his 1st save of the season
  • Final score: Blue Jays 2 Mets 1

My Take:

  • Jose Berrios threw six solid innings, giving up a run on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6. After giving up a run on 2 hits to start the 2nd inning, Berrios retired 9 in a row before walking Mark Canha leading off the 5th. There has to be some concern about the way Berrios reacts emotionally at times, which can affect his performance
  • The bullpen gave up a pair of hits while striking out 5 over the last 3 innings. Nate Pearson was credited with the win and Erik Swanson pitched the 9th for his first save in a Blue Jays uniform
  • Offensively, the bats continue to be ice cold, although Alejandro Kirk had a clutch hit in the 6th to tie the game and Vlad responded to his manager getting ejected by ripping an RBI double
  • The Blue Jays were a pitiful 2-13 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to extend the win streak to 4 games and complete their third sweep of the season. Yusei Kikuchi starts against Mets Kodai Senga.
