Game #29 - Boston Red Sox (17-14) @ Toronto Blue Jays (13-16) - game recap

Vladimir Guerrero Jr, hit a 2-run HR in a 10-2 loss to the Red Sox

After a disastrous road trip, the Blue Jay limped home to start a week long homestand that began tonight against the Red Sox. The Blue Jays won 3 of 4 in Fenway, outsscoring the Red Sox 17-8. Daulton Varsho made his season debut, activated off the 15-day IL and was in CF.  Casey Lawrence, who was claimed off waivers from Seattle yesterday, reported to the team. Righty Paxson Schultz and infielder Will Wagner were optioned to AAA-ball. Bowden Francis got the start with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate. Myles Straw was in LF. Ernie Clement was at the hot corner. Could the Blue Jays snap the 2-game skid and start the week and homestand with a win? Here is tonight's game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Jarren Duran belted a solo jack to right-center
  • Two batters later, Alex Bregman hammered a solo bomb to the 3rd deck in left
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 2nd as Kristian Campbell whacked a solo blast to the opposite field in right
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 3rd as Rafael Devers hammered a solo bomb to the 3rd deck in right
  • Three batters later, Willy Abreu hammered a 3-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Bregman and Trevor Story
  • The Blue Jays got a pair back in the bottom half of the inning as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hammeres a 2-run bomb to dead center; also scoring Bo Bichette
  • Bowden Francis pitching line: 3IP 8H 7R (all earned) 0BB 1K 72 pitches (49 for strikes)
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 8th on a ground out hit by Durran that scored Ceddanne Rafaela
  • The Red Sox added a run in the top of the 9th as Campbell doubled scoring Bregman
  • A batter later, Wilyer Abreu scored on a ground out hit by Triston Casas
  • Final score: Red Sox 10 Blue Jays 2
  • Garrett Crochet pitching line: 7IP 4H 2R (both earned) 3BB 5K 94 pitches (62 for strikes)

My Take:

  • It's generally not a winning strategy to give up five home runs for 7 runs. That's what happened to Bowden Francis, who labored through three innings where the Red Sox were pounding his pitches.
  • Casey Lawrence gave up 3 runs on 6 hits. Something tells me he won't be a Blue Jay for long
  • The lone offensive highlight was a Vladdy smash over the center field wall for the Blue Jays only 2 runs
  • The Blue Jays were 1-3 with runners in scoring position
  • Up next, the Blue Jays try to snap the 3-game skid. The Red Sox will start righty Lucas Giolito. The Blue Jaus have not announced a starter in what is likely a bullpen day.
